OESD products are available at your local dealer Featuring designs from OESD Design Pack #12077 Good and Happy created by Tim Work. This soft book is destined to be a child s favorite toy! Look for your own special fabrics to use for the appliqué shapes. You will need approximately 4 squares for the applique shapes. Use different textures to make this a feel and learn book. Look for lamé fabrics for the star, sparkly fabric for the butterfly wings, textured fabrics for the fish scales, Minkee fabric for the bear tummy, suede or leather for the dog bone. Let your imagination be your guide! The designs can also be stitched out without the words to embellish clothing and bedding if desired. Just stop the stitching before the last color change or use your software to remove it. SUPPLIES: OESD Design Pack #12077 Good and Happy Twelve Hoop size pieces of Benartex fabric for pages in a variety of small prints. One 2.5 X 11 rectangle of Benartex fabric for handle Two 1.5 X 8.5 rectangle of Benartex fabric for book spine Isacord Polyester Embroidery Thread for needle OESD Bobbin Thread Metrosene All Purpose Polyester Sewing Thread Organ Embroidery Needles HRFive Temporary Spray Adhesive OESD Ultra Clean and Tear Stabilizer Embroidery machine Sewing machine Photo 1 continued on next page
MARK AND EMBROIDER THE FABRIC Find and mark the center of one of the hoop-sized fabric pieces for the embroidery. See Photo 1 Adhere two layers of OESD Ultra Clean & Tear Stabilizer together with HRFive Temporary Spray Adhesive. Spray the top of the stabilizer and adhere to the wrong side of the fabric for the embroidery. Hoop the three layers as one and attach the hoop to the machine. Select and embroider one of the designs from the collection. Follow these easy steps for the appliqué portion of the design: After selecting the design, stitch the first color Pattern/ Placement. Trace the pattern piece accompanying these instructions and cut out the desired shapes from the fabrics of your choice. Let your imagination be your guide. Pick fabrics that complement the particular part of the animal you are work ing with. For example, use furry fabric like Minkee for the bear s tummy. Have fun scouting for fabrics with differ ent textures! Spray the back of the fabric piece very lightly with HRFive Temporary Adhesive Spray. Allow the piece to dry for 30 seconds or so until the adhesive becomes tacky. Place the cut-out fabric piece right side up on top of the Pattern/Placement line that was stitched on the fabric in the hoop. Start the machine. The next color Single Tack Down will secure the appliqué shape in place. Continue stitching until the design is complete. NOTE: If there is more than one appliqué fabric piece in the design, you will place the second piece after the second Pattern/Placement line stitches. Remove the hoop from the machine and the fabric from the hoop. Carefully tear away the excess stabilizer from the back one layer at a time. Trim this piece to 7 X 8 keeping the design centered. See Photo 2 Repeat the above instructions until there are twelve pages for the book. Use your machine s lettering feature or embroidery software to customize the made for/made by page. CONSTRUCT THE BOOK Place the pages in sets in this order with right sides together. Place the first page mentioned in each set with right side up & the second page mentioned in each set with the right side down. Pin along top, right side, and lower edge: Good and Happy my first poem book / Yummy Yummy (1st page) Tickle My Tummy / Fly, Fly, Sing and Play (2nd page) Watch Me Grow Every Day / Shine, Shine, Sun So Bright (3rd page) Wish Upon My Star Light / Flutter, Flutter, Butterfly (4th page) Enjoy the Color Swimming By / Love, Love, Rise Above (5th page) Remember Always Love / Made For Made By (6th page) Photo 2 Stitch sets together along the top, the right side, and the bottom edge. Leave the left side unstitched. (It will be encased by the spine.) Clip the corners and turn right side out and press. Put the pages in order. Baste all the pages together along the unstitched edge. CREATE AND ATTACH HANDLE AND SPINE: To create the handle, fold the 2.5 X 11 piece in half lengthwise with right sides together and stitch along the long side. Turn to the right side and press. Photo 3 Align the ends of the handles on the long right side of one of the 1.5 x 8.5 pieces of fabric for the spine approximately 2 up from the short end See Photo 3. Stitch in place approximately ¼ from edge of fabric. Place the remaining 1.5 X 8.5 piece right sides together with the first piece (the handle will be sandwiched between the two pieces), See Photo 4 and pin along the same long edge as the handle was stitched and the upper and lower edges See Photo 5.
Photo 4 Photo 5 Photo 6 Photo 7 With right sides still together, stitch a half inch seam allowance along the upper and lower short ends See Photo 6. Turn right side out and press. On the long edges opposite the handle, fold and press a.25 hem allowance to the wrong side. Insert the raw edges of the book into the open side of the spine. Stitch through all layers along the folded edge, making sure to catch the back edge See Photo 7. Copyright 2006 OESD, Inc. All rights reserved.
