Electric Vehicles / Motor Speed Control Digital to Proportional Conversions / Radio Remote-Control Retrofits Low-Cost Truck-Mounted Cranes Large-Scale Model Railway Locomotives Aerial Work Platforms Concrete Line Pumps Farm Implements Process Controls The DPC-100VO is a low-cost voltage controller which permits digital control of proportional motor drivers and hydraulic-valve amplifier cards. The DPC-100VO accepts two simple on/off command inputs to increase or decrease output voltage. A third input can be optionally used to reset the output voltage to zero (or minimum output voltage) or optionally to the maximum output voltage; or, to enable/disable voltage adjustments, allowing the increase/decrease signals to be piggy-backed onto existing remote-control output signals. Where-ever a 0-to-10 (or 0-to-5) volt signal is specified for proportional control of a process parameter such as speed or fluid flow, the DPC-100VO painlessly replaces a potentiometer allowing digital commands (e.g. from a toggle switch) to vary the proportional value. Signal (Wire) Descriptions Signal Wire Colour Description Ground Black Negative ground of the vehicle or system. +Power Orange +12 or +24 VDC source. This power source may be constant or switched. Main Red Main Enable command input. A logic low on this signal will force the output voltage to zero. A logic high condition on this signal will allow the output to be changed using the Increase, Decrease and Adjust/Clear command inputs. Valve Yellow Voltage output. A load impedance of at least 5 kilohms is recommended. Inc. Green Increase command input. A transition from logic low to logic high on this signal will increase the output voltage by one step. Holding this input at logic high will cause the output voltage to repeatedly step up. This input only has effect when Main is at logic high. If the Adjust/Clear input is configured for the Adjust enable function, then the Adjust input must also be at logic high for the Increase command input to have an effect. Dec. White Decrease command input. A transition from logic low to logic high on this signal will decrease the output voltage by one step. Holding this input at logic high will cause the output voltage to repeatedly step down. This input only has effect when Main is at logic high. If the Adjust/Clear input is configured for the Adjust enable function, then the Adjust input must also be at logic high for the Increase command input to have an effect. Adjust/ Clear Violet Adjust enable or Clear input. If this input is configured for the Adjust enable function, then the Inc. and Dec. inputs will be ignored unless this input is at logic high. In applications where Inc. and Dec. are piggy-backed onto two existing functions, the Adjust enable input can be used to prevent inadvertent adjustment of the valve-solenoid current when using the existing functions for their original purpose. If the application does not require that Inc. and Dec. be ignored at certain times, the Adjust enable input may be permanently tied to either +Power or Main (Vdrive). This input can be configured as a Clear input, in which case the output voltage will be reset to zero (or minimum voltage setting) or optionally the maximum output voltage (see SW1 Pole 8 under Configuration & Adjustments) whenever the Clear input is at logic high. LED Indicators The DPC-100VO has an LED to show whether each of the Adjust/Clear, Inc., Dec. inputs and the Valve voltage output is active. The Status LED tells the present operational mode of the DPC-100VO, as described in the Theory of Operation section (later in this document). Configuration & Adjustments An eight-pole DIP switch (SW1) and two trimmer potentiometers (Min. and Max.) are used to configure and adjust the DPC-100VO: SW1 Pole Function Details 1 Step Rate ON = Fast, OFF = Slow This switch selects the rate at which the output voltage will step up and down when the Inc. and Dec. command inputs are held at logic high. For a change in the position of this switch to take effect, +Power must be removed and then re-applied. 2 Number of Steps 3 Reset upon Main Off ON = 20, OFF = 10 This switch selects the number of steps between the minimum and maximum output voltage. For a change in the position of this switch to take effect, +Power must be removed and then re-applied. ON = Reset to minimum (or zero, if a Zero Step is configured) or maximum (if Reset to Maximum is configured) output voltage upon Main going to logic low OFF = Remember output voltage upon Main going to logic low This switch controls whether the present output voltage is retained and restored the next time Main is switched to logic high. For a change in the position of this switch to take effect, +Power must be removed and then re-applied. 4 Reserved This switch is reserved for future use and should be set to OFF. 5 Zero Step ON = The output voltage can be reduced to zero OFF = The output voltage does not go below the minimum voltage setting This switch adds an extra zero-voltage step below the lowest-voltage step. It is useful in applications where it is desired to have a proportional range that starts immediately at a non-zero voltage value and then steps linearly to a given maximum value, yet still be able to command zero voltage. SW1 Pole Function Details 6 Adjust function 7 Output Voltage Range 8 Reset to Maximum ON = The Adjust/Clear input is used to enable the Inc. and Dec. inputs OFF = The Adjust/Clear input is used to clear the output voltage to zero This switch controls what the Adjust/Clear input signal is used for. For a change in the position of this switch to take effect, +Power must be removed and then re-applied. ON = The output range is nominally 0 to 5 volts OFF = The output range is nominally 0 to 10 volts This switch selects between two voltage ranges commonly used in industrial and mobile electronic control equipment. ON = The output voltage resets (at power-up or Reset Upon Main Off) to the maximum output voltage instead of the minimum (or zero, if a Zero Step is configured) voltage. OFF = The output voltage resets to minimum (or zero, if a Zero Step is configured) at power-up or Reset Upon Main Off. Trimmer Function Details Min. Max. Minimum Voltage Maximum Voltage 0.0 to 5.4 V (or 0.0 to 2.7 V if SW1 Pole 7 is ON) Clockwise = Increasing Voltage This control determines the minimum output voltage. A change in the position of this control is immediately reflected at the output. 6.2 to 15 V (3.1 to 7.7 V if SW1 Pole 7 is ON) Clockwise = Increasing Voltage This control determines the maximum output voltage. A change in the position of this control is immediately reflected at the output. Aarcomm Systems Inc. 112-17 Fawcett Rd., Coquitlam, B.C., V3K 6V2, Canada Page 4

Theory of Operation The DPC-100VO is designed to replace potentiometers and joysticks in stand-alone systems, and retro-fit radio remote controls that do not have a proportional voltage output. A voltage from 0 to 10 (or 5) volts is updated 2000 times per second in response to digital inputs commanding increase or decrease in voltage. When the DPC-100VO detects that Main has been switched on, it will begin to generate a stable output voltage that does not vary with temperature or system voltage. Digital input logic levels at Inc. and Dec., in combination with Adjust/Clear, cause the output voltage to vary in discrete steps as described in Configuration & Adjustments. The Status LED shows thedpc-100vo s operating mode at all times, as follows: Behaviour Mode Details Constantly Illuminated Flashing slowly, half second on, half second off Waiting for Main and/or command Generating output voltage The DPC-100VO is waiting for both logic high level on Main and for a nonzero voltage command. When both conditions are met, the DPC-100VO will generate a positive output voltage. (Note: If no Zero Step is configured, then the Status LED will only be constantly illuminated when Main is at logic low.) The DPC-100VO is actively generating a positive output voltage. Set-up Procedure With the DPC-100VO unpowered, the DIP switches should first be set for the voltage-stepping behaviour and response to Main on/off desired. Then, set both Min. and Max. trimmers to approximately their 11 o clock positions. Switch on +Power and Main. Then, if Zero Step is enabled, momentarily activate the Inc. input while holding the Adjust input on (if Adjust/Clear is configured as Adjust enable). Adjust the Min. potentiometer for the desired minimum output voltage. Next, activate and hold the Inc. input (and Adjust input, if Adjust/Clear is configured as Adjust enable) until the voltage stops increasing. Adjust the Max. potentiometer for the desired maximum output voltage. Note: If the output voltage stops increasing while rotating the Max. trimmer Aarcomm Systems Inc. 112-17 Fawcett Rd., Coquitlam, B.C., V3K 6V2, Canada Page 8
clockwise, and the output voltage is still not at the desired maximum level, then the +Power voltage may be too low; please refer to the Electrical Characteristics section for information on maximum output voltage and +Power voltage requirement. If Adjust/Clear is configured as Clear, then activating the Clear input will force the output voltage to zero (or the Min. voltage setting if no Zero Step is configured).
