Find your local YellaWood dealer at YellaWood.com CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS Start by cutting treated lumber to size. 1. Using two of the 10 2x4 s, cut 10 pieces to Cut the third 10 2x4 into 2 pieces at 58 each (4 10 ). 3. Take one 8 2x4 and cut in half (2 pieces at 4 each). 4. The second 8 2x4 should be cut to these two lengths: (a) one piece at 51 and (b) one piece at Cut a 6 2x4 to these two lengths: (a) one piece at 36 and (b) one piece at 32-1/2. 6. The last 6 2x4 needs to be cut down to a length of 47-1/2. 7. Cut all nine decking boards (5/4 x 6 ) in half so that you have 18 pieces 4 in length. DRAWING A (LOWER SHELF)
2 POTTING BENCH BUILDING INSTRUCTIONS BUILDING INSTRUCTIONS 1. To build the frame for the lower shelf, take the two 4 2x4 s along with five 21 2x4 s and assemble as shown in Drawing A. Use 2-1/2 screws. TIP: At the outer edges where the 21 2x4 s are doubled, you should place the screws close together. This will be covered with another 2x4 later and room is needed for the second set of screws. TIP: It is always good practice to pre-drill pilot holes for screws to prevent wood from splitting. 2. To build the frame for the main shelf (see Drawing B). Take the two 58 2x4 s along with the last five 21 2x4 s and the 2 2 hardwood dowel and assemble as pictured. Mark the center and 2 from one end of each 58 2x4. Using a 1 paddle bit, drill 1 deep holes for the dowel. Remember, near the outer edge put the screws closer together leaving room for future screws. Use 2-1/2 screws except for the hardwood dowel. For the dowel, use 2 screws. 3. Using 2-1/2 screws, attach lower shelf frame (built in step 8) to the 36 2x4. This 2x4 should be in the left-front corner and should extend 9 below the shelf. Review Drawing C for placement. Attach the 51 2x4 to the left-rear extending 9 below the shelf. At the right-front corner, attach the 32-1/2 2x4 to the frame. This leg should extend 5-1/2 below the shelf. This will allow ground clearance after the wheels are installed. The 47-1/2 2x4 goes to the right-rear. This leg should also extend 5-1/2 below the frame, again, allowing for ground clearance. Centered on the rear of the frame, attach the 42 2x4 flush with the bottom edge of the shelf frame. 4. On the three back boards, mark a line 23-5/8 up from the lower shelf frame. This will aid in the placement of the main shelf. Attach the main shelf (built in step 9) as pictured in Drawing D. 5. Starting at the front, attach four 4 deck boards to each of the lower and main shelves. Use 2 screws. 6. Starting at the top, attach eight deck boards to the outside back. Use 2 screws. 7. Attach the three shelf brackets so that their tops are 12 above the main shelf frame. Use 3/4 screws. 8. Starting at the back, attach the last two deck boards to the shelf brackets. Use 3/4 screws. 9. Marking the center and 3/4 from the bottom and using a 1/2 paddle bit, drill holes through both the right-front and right-rear 2x4 s for the axle. Feed the axle through the holes and place a wheel on each side. Tap an axle hat nut on one end and press flush to its corresponding wheel. For the other wheel, mark 3/8 out from the wheel and trim the axle with a hacksaw. Tap on the last axle hat nut. DRAWING B (MAIN SHELF) DRAWING C DRAWING D
3 FASTENER AND HARDWARE INFORMATION SHEET FOR MICRONIZED COPPER TREATED PRODUCTS Micronized copper treated products (micronized copper quaternary or micronized copper azole) offer treated pine with micronized copper preservatives exhibits corrosion rates on metal products similar to CCA pressure treated wood and untreated wood. For interior or exterior applications Use fasteners and hardware that are in compliance with the manufacturer s recommendations and the building codes for their intended use. As with any good design and construction practices, treated wood should not be used in applications where trapped moisture or water can occur. Where design and/or actual conditions allow for constant, repetitive or long periods of wet conditions, only stainless steel fasteners should be used. For exterior applications The following minimum galvanization levels may be used for connectors, joist hangers, fasteners and other hardware that are placed in direct contact with exterior applications of micronized copper treated wood: Fasteners - nails, screws, etc. ASTM A 153 (1 oz/ft 2 ) Hardware - connectors, joist hangers, etc. ASTM A 653 G90 (0.90 oz/ft 2 ) The effects of other building materials within a given assembly, along with environmental factors, should also be considered when selecting the appropriate hardware and fasteners to use for a given project containing treated wood. Stainless Steel fasteners and hardware are required for Permanent Wood Foundations below grade and are recommended for use with treated wood in other severe exterior applications such as swimming pools, salt water exposure, etc. - Type 304 and 316 are recommended grades to use. Aluminum building products may be placed in direct contact with YellaWood brand products used for interior uses and above ground exterior applications such as decks, fencing, and landscaping, direct contact of micronized copper treated products and aluminum building products should be limited to code-compliant construction applications that provide proper water drainage and do not allow the wood to be exposed to standing water or water immersion. We recommend you contact the aluminum building products manufacturer for its recommendations regarding use of its aluminum products in contact with micronized copper treated wood in ground contact applications or when exposed to salt water, brackish water, or chlorinated water, such as swimming pools or hot tubs. Also check with the aluminum building products manufacturer regarding compatibility with other chemicals and cleaning agents. Contact Osmose for further information on aluminum contact use in commercial, industrial, and specialty applications such as boat construction.
4 IMPORTANT INFORMATION Consult the end tag to determine which preservative or preservative system was used in the treatment of that particular product. Micronized copper treated products may be used in direct contact with aluminum building products when limited to code-compliant construction applications that provide proper water drainage and do not allow the wood to be exposed to standing water or water immersion. Use fasteners and other hardware that are in compliance with building codes for the intended use with micronized copper treated products. Do not burn preserved wood. Wear a dust mask and goggles when cutting or sanding wood. Wear gloves when working with wood. Some preservative may migrate from the treated wood into soil/water or may dislodge from the treated wood surface upon contact with skin. Wash exposed skin areas thoroughly. All sawdust and construction debris should be cleaned up and disposed of after construction. Wash work clothes separately from other household clothing before reuse. Preserved wood should not be used where it may come into direct or indirect contact with drinking water, except for uses involving incidental contact such as fresh water docks and bridges. Do not use preserved wood under circumstances when the preservative may become a component of food, animal feed or beehives. Do not use preserved wood as mulch. Only preserved wood that is visibly clean and free of surface residue should be used. If the wood is to be used in an interior application and becomes wet during construction, it should be allowed to dry before being covered or enclosed. Mold growth can and does occur on the surface of many products, including untreated and treated wood, during prolonged surface exposure to excessive moisture conditions. To remove mold from the treated wood surface, wood should be allowed to dry. Typically, mild soap and water can be used to remove remaining surface mold. For more information visit Projects should be designed and installed in accordance with federal, state and local building codes and ordinances governing construction in your area, and in accordance with the National Design Disposal Recommendations: boilers in accordance with federal, state and local regulations.
