This section must be carefully reviewed and edited by the Architect or Engineer to meet the requirements of the project and local building code. Coordinate this section with other specification sections and the Drawings. Delete all Specifier Notes after editing this section. Section numbers and titles are based on MasterFormat 2014 Update. SECTION LOCKABLE DOWELS Specifier Notes: This section covers Halfen USA, Inc. HSD-LD lockable dowels for temporary movement joints in post-tensioned concrete slabs. Consult Halfen USA, Inc. for assistance in editing this section for the specific application. PART 1 GENERAL 1.1 SECTION INCLUDES A. Lockable dowels for temporary movement joints in post-tensioned concrete slabs. 1.2 RELATED REQUIREMENTS Specifier Notes: Edit the following list of related sections as necessary. Warranty Documentation: Submit manufacturer s standard warranty. 1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Manufacturer s Qualifications: 1. Capable of providing field service representation during installation. 2. Manufacture in accordance with established quality assurance program. 1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Delivery Requirements: Deliver materials to site in manufacturer s original, unopened containers and packaging, with labels clearly identifying product name and manufacturer. B. 3 1. Store and handle materials in accordance with manufacturer s instructions. 2. Keep materials in manufacturer s original, unopened containers and packaging until installation. 3. Store materials in clean, dry area protected from weather. 4. Protect materials during storage, handling, and installation to prevent damage. PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.1 MANUFACTURERS A. Lockable shear load connectors comprised of dowel, sleeve, locking components, and 2-component epoxy resin installed at temporary movement joints between 2 slabs. b. Accommodates initial concrete shrinkage and is locked in position with mechanical plate and epoxy resin. 2. Design: ACI 318 and AISC Steel Construction Manual. 3. Maximum Vertical Design Strength in 4000 psi Concrete: 15.7 kip. 4. Dowel: b. Diameter: 1-3/16 inches. c. Length: 18 inches. 5. Sleeve: b. Internal Diameter: 1-1/4 inches. c. Accommodates initial concrete shrinkage and is locked in position with mechanical plate and epoxy resin. 2. Design: ACI 318 and AISC Steel Construction Manual. 3. Maximum Vertical Design Strength in 4000 psi Concrete: 30.6 kip. 4. Dowel: b. Diameter: 1-3/16 inches. c. Length: 19 inches. 5. Sleeve: b. Internal Diameter: 1-1/4 inches. c. 5 8. Void Former and Lid: Plastic. PART 3 EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION A. Examine areas of formwork to receive lockable dowels. B. Notify Architect of conditions that would adversely affect installation. C. Do not begin installation until unacceptable conditions are corrected. 3.2 INSTALLATION A. Install lockable dowels in accordance with manufacturer s instructions. Specifier Notes: Include ONE of the following TWO sentences for positioning lockable dowels. If the first sentence is included, specify the location of the lockable dowels in the slab. B. Position Lockable Dowels at: 1. End Distance: inches. 2. Minimum Spacing: -inch horizontal centers. 3. Maximum Spacing: -inch horizontal centers. 4. Depth: [Center of slab] [ inches from top of slab]. C. Position lockable dowels at end distance, horizontal centers, and depth in slab as indicated on the Drawings. Specifier Notes: When specifying Halfen HSD-LD 30 lockable dowels or HSD-LD-ULTRA 30 lockable high-capacity dowels, include the first sentence below. When specifying Halfen HSD-LD-W 30 lockable wall dowels, include the second sentence below. D. Slab-to-Slab Lockable Dowels: Securely attach lockable dowel sleeves to formwork to avoid displacement during placing of concrete. E. Slab-to-Wall Lockable Dowels: Securely attach lockable dowel threaded anchors to formwork, using included nailing plate, to avoid displacement during placing of concrete. F. Install lockable dowels plumb, level, square, and perpendicular to joints. Specifier Notes: Specify the number of days (generally 28 to 120 days), when movement between slabs has stabilized and the joint between slabs has been filled, for the dowels to be locked. Consult post-tensioned concrete designer for more information. G. Lock dowels in position after days using locking plate and epoxy resin. H. Use epoxy resin supplied by manufacturer.
