The two wings at the point perform a pre-drill hole in the wood to prevent the thread from dulling and the wood from cracking in the area of the drill hole. Grooves in the lower part of head which directly countersink wood, melamine and other materials, at the same time as guarding against rotation. For wood metal fixings when wood thickness is greater than 12 mm a hole is required in the wood with a space which prevents the starting of threading in the wood before finishing drilling the metal. Otherwise the screw point may burn out, the wood may break or, in some cases, there may be ungluing of the wood metal joint. To avoid this, one of the following options must be taken: Pre-drill the wood, with a drillhole of a greater diameter than the thread. Use an extra-long screw point (not usually sold) Use a two-wing point screw: a bore is produced in the wood with a greater diameter than that of the thread, so that this does not come into contact with the wood. The wings will break when they come into contact with the metal and the edge threads in it.
