3 Installation instructions - Graz A. General information 1. The following items are enclosed: Metal step elements, powder enamelled in dark grey: 1 top element 1 bottom element 1 floor element + the number of middle elements required The bottom element is 35 mm (= the thickness of one step) lower than the middle elements (drawings 1, 2, 3, 4). The required number of wooden steps, one of which has no grooves (for the top step). (Drawing 5). A 4 mm Allen key to attach the step elements, and a 6 mm Allen key to attach the handrail fittings. Hexagonal head screws, washers and rawlplugs to attach the top and bottom elements. 6 x 30 mm wood screws to attach the wooden steps. (These screws must be greased before use!) M10 cap nuts, washers, M10 threaded bars to attach the handrail. Handrail elements, handrail fittings. The double handrail (drawing 7) is for the top step. Mount the single handrails (drawing 6) on every second middle step. Mount the handrail rods on every second step - on the broad side of the step (drawings 8 + 9). 2. Tools needed: Electric drill (perhaps with impact drilling function), 3 mm and 4 mm wood drills, 10 mm masonry drill, 10 mm rawlplugs, 10.5 mm wood drill, cordless drill with bits for cross-head screws, 13 mm and 17 mm spanners, tape measure/folding rule, spirit level, 4 mm and 6 mm Allen keys, clamps, metal saw. It is also a good idea to have a couple of battens or something similar ready to support the steps while they are being mounted. 10 Please note that impurities may occur in the threads of the components. We have enclosed a screw tap for correction of this. (see drawing). We apologize for the inconvenience. 3. Graz Multiflex steps must be mounted from the top downwards. 4. Each step element can be adjusted up to 4 cm in height (drawing 10)

4 5. Before starting installation, calculate the exact rise height for each step. This can be done by dividing the ceiling height (from the top edge of the floor to the top edge of the next floor) by the number of rises. The number of rises is the same as the number of steps + 1. No. of rises: Ceiling heightdivided by 19 No. of steps: One less than no. of rises Landing space: for straight flight (cm) Ceiling height: minimum to maximum Example: Top edge of floor to top edge of next floor = 263 cm. 12 rises (11 steps + 1). 263 cm divided by 12 = cm. This is the rise height per step. The aperture in the ceiling should not be less than 130 cm for straight flights of steps. This is to ensure that walking up the steps is a comfortable experience. Possible rise height: 18.5 to 22.5 cm Recommended rise height: 18.5 to 20.5 cm B. Installation 1. Top step element Measure (from the top edge of the top floor) the calculated rise height plus the thickness of one step (e.g. step 3.5 cm thick plus calculated rise height cm = cm). This is the installation height for the top edge of the step support in the top element (drawing 12). Attach the top element to the concrete floor using rawlplugs and 8 mm hexagonal head screws (8 mm hexagonal head screws in wooden beams). Insert a 20 mm washer between the screw and the element. Before attaching the top element finally, use a spirit level to check carefully that the element is exactly horizontal. Hard cork can be placed under the top and floor elements to suppress noise. 2. Now mount the middle elements from the top downwards. Make sure you stick carefully to the previously calculated rise height (it may be a good idea to use a piece of wood with the exact length of the rise height). Adjust the elements into position to suit the flight of stairs required, and keep them in position using the enclosed screws. Support suspended elements that have already been mounted with a batten or similar object (drawing 13). 3. Connect the three final elements (2 middle elements and the bottom element) and the floor element to the element mounted last. Adjust them, and fix them into position. Then attach the floor element to the floor (in the same way as the top element was attached).

Attaching the wooden steps: Mount the wooden steps with the broad side facing first one way then the other alternately, and fix them into position using 6 x 30 mm wood screws through the element from beneath. For pre-drilling the screw holes: pre-drill beech multiplex steps with a 4 mm drill approx. 25 mm deep (drawing 14). It is a good idea to use a spacer device so you do not drill too deep. 5. Handrail elements The handrail can be mounted either on the right side or on the left. Always mount the handrail elements on the broad side of the step. Start by mounting the double element on the top step. If the top step is narrow on the side where the handrail is to be placed, attach the handrail to the second-top step. Drill two holes in the step concerned using a 10.5 mm wood drill to mount the double element (drawing 7). Position the middle of the hole 28 mm from the side of the step and 28 mm from the front edge/back edge of the step. Tip: Use a clamp to fix a piece of wood underneath the step at the point of drilling to prevent the wood from splitting when you drill through it. Place the next handrail rod two steps below on the broad side of the step. Drill with a 10.5 mm wood drill (see drawing 15). If the single rod is too long at the point where it meets the double rod, shorten it with a metal saw. Mount the handrail element using a cap nut, washer and 10 x 70 mm threaded bar (drawing 15). Attach the handrail elements to each other using the handrail fittings (drawing 16). Mount the rest of the handrail rods in the same way. After installation tighten all the screws carefully, and repeat this procedure about 4 weeks after the steps are first used.
