Oxy/Fuel Torch Care & Maintenance of the Gas Regulators The Low pressure gauge indicates the delivery pressure to the hoses & torch The High pressure gauge Indicates the pressure from tank The Pressure adjusting screw Turning clockwise allows the gas allows to flow Turning counterclockwise reduces or stops the gas flow The Inlet Connections Oxygen are right hand thread/acetylene are left hand thread Keep free of oil, grease, & dirt

Oxy/Fuel Torch Some More info on Regulators Always keep the regulator free of oil, grease and other flammable substances Never use oil or grease on the regulator, cylinder or manifold connection DO NOT change the inlet connection on a regulator in an attempt to use the regulator for a different gas service Never stand in front or behind a regulator when opening the cylinder valve

Oxy/Fuel Torch Backfires and flashbacks Backfires occur when the torch flame burns back into the torch tip and is extinguished with a loud pop. They occur either because the torch tip touched the work or because of insufficient gas pressure. They are generally harmless. However, flashbacks are more serious when the flame front does not extinguish, i but burns back sometimes beyond the mixing i chamber, through h the hoses, and even into regulator and supply. A common inside diameter of oxy-fuel gas hose is 1/4 inch. If you calculate the volume of 100 feet of hose with an inside diameter of 1/4 inch, this means, should oxygen enter the fuel gas hose or should fuel gas enter the oxygen hose, a mixed gas explosion with the force potential of 20 sticks of dynamite could occur. Flashback arrestors Flashback arrestors are designed to prevent a flashback from reaching upstream equipment. They offer added safety and often include reverse flow check valves in a single unit Flashback arrestors must be install at both the gauge and torch end of the hose. The arrestors must be installed between the hose on the gauge or the hose and the torch (Most torches have built-in flashback arrestors)

Oxy/Fuel Torch Check valves The purpose of an internal check valve is to reduce the possibility of reverse flow gas. It is not intended to act as a fire stop! Ensure that the internal check valves are working properly by testing at least every six months, more often if the hoses are frequently removed from the torch. Spring activated Gas flow Flow of gas keeps valve open Once flow pressure decreases, valve will closes preventing back flow of gas

Oxy/Fuel Torch The Hoses The hoses are usually color coded, but not always Oxygen (green) Acetylene (red) Be careful not to use other hoses, such as air lines, LP gas, etc. They are neoprene over braided inner section Be careful around sharp objects, they can be cut very easily They are constructed of flame retardant materials, but will burn if there is a flashback or exposed to sustained heat Hoses are graded Make sure you are using the right hose for the right gas Keep welding hoses clear of any failing metal, slag or sparks. Never allow hoses to become coated with oil, grease or dirt. Such coatings could conceal damaged areas. Examine the hoses before attaching to welding torch handle or regulators. If cuts, burns, worn areas or damaged fittings are found, replace the hose. Completely l replace welding hose if it contains multiple l splices or when cracks or severe wear is noticed.

Oxy/Fuel Torch General Safety Tips Keep regulators free of oil, grease and other flammable substances Check valves stop reverse gas flow, they do not act as a fire stop Never starve a tip, this can cause a flashback Always keep cylinders in an upright position Never stand in front or behind a regulator when opening the cylinder valve Do not open acetylene valve more than 1 1 / 2 turns Always make sure area is safe and flammable free

The powder fasteners, or pins, are made of a special alloy steel with a very specific heat-treating gprocess to have the right mix of hardness, toughness and ductility for PAT applications. Refer to the owner s manual or application chart to determine which color and level powder load should be used. Powder loads are available in single shot for.22-caliber tools, and in 10-shot strips for.27-caliber semi-automatic tools. Its color and number designate the level of powder for each load. Point the tool away from yourself and others during loading or handling. Do not put hand/fingers in front of the muzzle. Always clear the work area on all sides, and post appropriate warning signs to notify bystanders and co-workers.

More Safety Precautions Never fire a PAT in an explosive or flammable environment. Double eye protection is required when firing PAT overhead Before starting a job, always know the thickness and type of base material into which you are fastening. Test fastenings should always be made starting with the lowest powder level. Never make fastenings in spalled or cracked areas or too close to an edge. A spall shield should be used to help reduce the amount of surface chipping when fastening directly into concrete or sparking from directly fastening into steel. Always unload a PAT before disassembling, assembling, replacing the barrel or cleaning.

GENERAL SAFETY To avoid serious injury or death: ALWAYS make sure that the operator and bystanders wear safety glasses. Hearing and head protection are also recommended. ALWAYS post warning signs when powder actuated tools are in use. Signs should state "Powder Actuated Tool in Use" and should be posted within 50 feet of the area where the tool is being used. ALWAYS store powder actuated tools unloaded. Tools and powder loads should be stored in a locked container out of the reach of children. NEVER place any part of your body over the front muzzle of the tool even if no fastener is present. The fastener, pin or tool piston can cause serious injury or death in the event of an accidental discharge. NEVER transport fasteners or other hard objects in the same pocket or container with powder loads. These objects may strike the powder loads, thereby setting them off and causing serious injury or death. NEVER attempt to bypass or circumvent any of the safety features on a powder actuated tool.

Teeth facing toward you. Storage area for wrenches and new blades.

Utility Knife Safety Always pull, never push a knife Always keep your free hand (and other body parts) away from the line of the cut Cut resistant gloves are a necessity Your blade must be sharp, a dull blade requires more force and is likely to slip When cutting thick materials, make several passes, cutting a little deeper with each pass Do not bend or apply side loads to blades, blades are brittle and can snap easily Retract or collapse blade when not in use

Welding Welding Helmet Inspect welder and equipment prior to use. Check leads, ground clamp, LN- 25 and whip if necessary Safety Glasses Check that the welding helmet is free from cracks and operating properly. Also confirm the lens is of the proper shade for the welding operation. Inspect work area prior to start of welding for people and flammable material. Place a UV screen up if working in a high traffic area to protect others. Ear Plugs Welding Gloves Wear proper PPE Goggles and face shield or safety glasses and welding helmet Ear plugs Dry, hole-free insulating gloves Leathers (extent depends on job)

Welding Electrical Shock Can Kill The electrode and work (or ground) circuits are electrically "hot" when the welder is on. Do not touch these "hot" parts with your bare skin or wet clothing. Wear dry, hole-free gloves to insulate hands. Insulate yourself from work and ground using dry insulation. Make certain the insulation is large enough to cover your full area of physical contact with work and ground. In addition to the normal safety precautions, if welding must be performed under electrically hazardous conditions (in damp locations or while wearing wet clothing; on metal structure such as floors, gratings or scaffolds; when in cramped positions such as sitting, kneeling or lying, if there is a high risk of unavoidable accidental contact with the work piece or ground) use the following equipment: Semiautomatic at DC Constant t Voltage (Wire) Welder. DC Manual (Stick) Welder, AC Welder with Reduced Voltage Control In semiautomatic or automatic wire welding, the electrode, electrode reel, welding head, nozzle or semiautomatic' welding gun are also electrically "hot". Always be sure the work cable makes a good electrical connection with the metal being welded. The connection should be as close as possible to the area being welded. Ground the work or metal to be welded to a good electrical (earth) ground. Maintain the electrode holder, work clamp, welding cable and welding machine in good, safe operating condition. Replace damaged insulation. Never dip the electrode in water for cooling. Never simultaneously touch electrically "hot" parts of electrode holders connected to two welders because voltage between the two can be the total of the open circuit voltage of both welders. When working above floor level, use a safety belt to protect yourself from a fall should you get a shock.

Welding Arc Rays Can Burn Use a shield with the proper filter and cover plates to protect your eyes from sparks and the rays of the arc when welding or observing open arc welding. Head shield and filter lens should conform to ANSI Z87.1 standards. Use suitable clothing made from durable flame-resistant material to protect your skin and that of your helpers from the arc rays. Protect other nearby personnel with suitable non-flammable screening and/or warn them not to watch the arc nor expose themselves to the arc rays or to hot spatter or metal. Cylinders May Explode if Damaged Use only compressed gas cylinders containing the correct shielding gas for the process used and properly operating regulators designed for the gas and pressure used. All hoses, fittings, etc. should be suitable for the application and maintained i in good condition. Always keep cylinders in an upright position securely chained to an undercarriage or fixed support. Cylinders should be located away from areas where they may be struck or subjected to physical damage and a safe distance from arc welding or cutting operations and any other source of heat, sparks, or flame. Never allow the electrode, electrode holder or any other electrically "hot" parts to touch a cylinder. Keep your head and face away from the cylinder valve outlet when opening the cylinder valve. Valve protection caps should always be in place and hand tight except when the cylinder is in use or connected for use.

Welding For Electrically Powered Equipment Turn off input power using the disconnect switch at the fuse box before working on the equipment. Install equipment in accordance with the U.S. National Electrical Code, all local codes and the manufacturer's recommendations. Ground the equipment in accordance with the U.S. National Electrical Code and the manufacturer's recommendations. Electric and Magnetic Fields May be Dangerous Electric current flowing through h any conductor causes localized li Electric and Magnetic Fields (EMF). Welding current creates EMF fields around welding cables and welding machines. EMF fields may interfere with some pacemakers, and welders having a pacemaker should consult their physician before welding. Exposure to EMF fields in welding may have other health effects which are now not known. All welders should use the following procedures in order to minimize exposure to EMF fields from the welding circuit: Route the electrode and work cables together- Secure them with tape when possible. Never coil the electrode lead around your body. Do not place your body between the electrode and work cables. If the electrode cable is on your right side, the work cable should also be on your right side. Connect the work cable to the work piece as close as possible to the area being welded. Do not work next to welding power source.

Welding For Engine Powered Equipment Turn the engine off before troubleshooting and maintenance work unless the maintenance work requires it to be running. Operate engine in open, well-ventilated areas or vent the engines exhaust fumes outdoors. Do not add the fuel near an open flame, welding arc or when the engine is running. Stop the engine and allow it to cool before refueling to prevent spilled fuel from vaporizing on contact with hot engine parts and igniting. Do not spill fuel when filling tank. If fuel is spilled, wipe it up and do not start engine until fumes have bean eliminated. Keep all equipment safety guards, covers and devices in position and in good repair. Keep hands, hair, clothing and tools away from V-belts, gears, fans and all other moving parts when starting, operating or repairing equipment In some cases it may be necessary to remove safety guards to perform required maintenance. Remove guards only when necessary and replace them when the maintenance requiring their removal is complete. Always use the greatest care when working near moving parts. Do not put your hands near the engine fan. Do not attempt to override the governor or idler by pushing on the throttle control rods while the engine is running. To prevent accidentally starting gasoline engines while turning the engine or welding generator during maintenance work, disconnect the spark plug wires, distributor cap or magneto wire as appropriate. To avoid scalding, do not remove the radiator pressure cap when the engine is hot.

Welding Fumes and Gases Can Be Dangerous Welding may produce fumes and gases hazardous to health. Avoid breathing these fumes and gasses. When welding, keep your head out of the fume. Use enough ventilation and/or exhaust at the arc to keep fumes and gases away from the breathing zone. When welding with electrodes which require special ventilation such as stainless or hard facing (see instructions on container or MSDS) or on lead or cadmium plated steel and other metals or coatings which produce highly toxic fumes, keep exposure as low as possible and below Threshold Limit Values CTLV) using local exhaust or mechanical ventilation. In confined spaces or in some circumstances, outdoors, a respirator may be required. Additional precautions are also required when welding on galvanized steel. Do not weld in locations near chlorinated hydrocarbon vapors coming from degreasing, cleaning or spraying operations. The heat and rays of the arc can react with solvent vapors to form phosgene, a highly toxic gas, and other irritating products. Shielding gases used for arc welding can displace air and cause injury or death. Always use enough ventilation, especially in confined areas, to insure breathing air is safe. Read and understand the manufacturer's instructions for this equipment and the consumables to be used, including the q p, g material safety data sheet (MSDS) and follow your employer's safety practices. MSDS forms are available from your welding distributor or from the manufacturer.
