8/7/ HP SWING DOOR INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
Installation Instructions for Typical Construction These instructions were developed and tested for use with typical construction in a wall system designed to manage water. These instructions are not to be used with any other construction method. Building designs, construction methods, building materials, and site conditions are unique to your project and may require an installation method different from these instructions and additional care. Determining the appropriate installation method is the responsibility of the installer, general contractor, envelope engineer and or architect. shall not be responsible for site conditions or any variations to these installation instructions. Handling and Storage: Provide full support under the framework while storing, moving and installing the product. DO NOT lift the product by the head member only or pull from the jamb members. DO NOT store in direct sunlight or in containers without adequate ventilation. Allow sufficient spacing between products for ventilation. DO NOT lean doors more than 10 degrees or in precarious angles. Keep stored in a vertical position if possible. Damage caused to the any part of the door or its components from poor storage practices shall not be covered under the limited warranty. Due to the size and weight a minimum of two persons is required for installation. Please follow the latest version of ASTM E 2112 standard practices for installation quality. YOU WILL NEED TO SUPPLY: Flat shims/spacers Project approved sealants and backer rods #8 x 1-2 Pan head corrosion resistant screws TOOLS REQUIRED: Tape measure 2,4 and 6 foot Level Square Hammer Flat pry bar Sealant gun Drill 2mm, 3mm and 5mm Allen keys (Hinge Adjustments) T-20 Torx wrench (Roller Adjustment) #2 Square bit drive #2 & #3 Phillips bit drive Always read the Vinyl Window and Door Limited Warranty before purchasing or installing Vinyl Windows and Doors manufactured by. By installing this product, you are acknowledging that this Limited Warranty is part of the terms of the sale. Failure to comply with all and maintenance instructions may void your warranty. See Limited Warranty for complete details at
1ROUGH OPENING PREPARATION A. Confirm the opening is plumb and level. Ensure the bottom of the rough opening does not slope toward the interior. Note: It is critical the bottom is level and supported without humps or dips that can cause the door frame to twist, bow or tilt. B. Confirm the door will fit the opening. Measure all four sides of the finished rough opening to make sure is a minimum of 1/2" clearance in width and 3/8" in height. The finished rough opening includes materials such as WRB, flashing, shims and any other materials that may shrink the opening. Measure the width at the top, bottom, and center. Measure the height at the far left side, the far right side, and in the center. The finished RO must be a minimum of ½ wider and 3/8 taller than the net door frame size. Note: Correct any problems with the rough opening before proceeding. C. Apply threshold weather proofing. Follow manufacturer s instructions and construction specifications when installing weatherproofing materials. D. Sill-Pans must not interfere with proper sill support of the door unit or cause distortion to the door sill. It is the responsibility of the installer and/or General contractor to ensure that no distortion, warping or bowing is caused to the unit due to fastening over uneven surfaces. VPI requires all units be installed in a flat vertical plane. Note: Ensure all waterproofing materials are designed for use with PVC products and installed correctly. does not endorse or discourage the use of any brand of flashing or sealant materials. Following the flashing manufactures recommendations, apply flashing to the nail fins or sills and surrounding wall surface starting with the bottom, sides, top, creating a shingle effect.
2PREPARE THE DOOR FOR INSTALLATION A. Remove the shipping protection from the door. Unscrew the 2x4 and Inspect the frame and panels for damage. DO NOT install damaged units. B. Rotate all straps to the interior prior to inserting the unit into the rough opening. DO NOT bend or twist the steel strap from its natural form. 2C C. The Interior adaptor ramp is only optional on the HP Out-Swing sill. It should be determined prior to installation if the part will be used. If not needed, remove the part before inserting the unit into the rough opening. The Interior adaptor is required on HP IN-Swings to meet accessibility requirements. This will also assist in the finish flooring height and allow the panel to clear the flooring when opened. 2A 3SETTING AND FASTENING THE DOOR TWO OR MORE PEOPLE WILL BE REQUIRED FOR THE FOLLOWING STEPS. A. Sill-Shimming should only be use when the water proofing details require it or the sill is uneven or not level. Fully supported sills without shims are preferred. However if you choose to use shims, we require the sill to be fully supported with no gaps exceeding two inches and shims under all vertical members. Note: Make sure the door will have complete support under the sill; a maximum of.5 exterior over hang is permitted. B. Insert the door by placing the bottom of the door at the bottom of the opening and then tilt the top into position. Center the door between the sides of the opening to allow equal clearance for shimming, temporary fasten a few straps into to hold the door in place while shimming it plumb, level and square. Note: DO NOT slide the bottom of the door into the opening, as sliding may damage the sealant lines. C. Shim thickness and material Wedge shaped shims are not recommended for use under the sill unless used as part of an engineered sill pan system. Shims must be constructed from high impact non-deteriorating and corrosion resistant material such as PVC or similar plastic.
3SETTING AND FASTENING THE DOOR (CONTINUED) D. Jamb-Shimming Shims should be located on both frame jambs, where structural horizontal members intersect the perimeter frame, and at locking hardware points. Vinyl windows and doors require shimming and fastening to support the frame from twisting and moving. Straps may need to be shimmed to avoid frame roll. NOTE: Additional shims may be required for support at the top jamb opposite of the shims. This will help support the hinge jamb by using the head member when installing level. It is the installers responsibility to address any rough opening framing issues during installation. Plumb and square the door. Insert shims between the door and rough opening. Keep shims back 1/2" from interior face of door if interior seal is specified. The flat 1/4 x 1 1/2 x 4 shim needs to be installed to the frame prior to inserting the door unit into the opening. This shim may be applied with sealant of the same material specified for the waterproofing. The door must be plum, level and square to avoid having unnecessary adjustments to the sash panel. E. Note: This process must be verified before fastening DO NOT over shim. F. Head-Shimming is not recommended, as this may not allow for normal building 3D Hinge & Locking Point Locations EXAMPLE SHIMS WRB
3SETTING AND FASTENING THE DOOR (CONTINUED) Frame Squaring is essential. To do this properly one must first take corner to corner dimensions (D1 & D2) then determine if both dimensions are within the allowed 1/8 of tolerance. If not then split the difference and that is the overall adjustment that needs to be made. Level & Plumb Use a level to check the sill and jamb to determine if the frame is level and plumb. The level is level or plumb when the bubble is centered between the two center hash marks.
3SETTING AND FASTENING THE DOOR (CONTINUED) G. Fasten the door to the opening. Use specified fasteners into every hole of the strap. DO NOT in any way bend or force the strap while fastening. Shims are required behind the strap to prevent the strap from twisting the frame and support for each screw. DO NOT over tighten. All fasteners must be constructed from or coated with corrosion resistant material such as, but not limited to stainless or galvanized steel. Screws must penetrate a minimum of 1 into structural framing lumber and the flat non-tapered head must cover elongated holes in nailing flange. Screw size #8 minimum. Screw length formula: flange thickness + waterproofing thickness + sheathing thickness + minimum of 1 = (X) screw length. EXAMPLE SHIMS WRB 3G
8/7/17 3 SETTING AND FASTENING THE DOOR (CONTINUED) H. Verify frame gasket is compressed. This can simply be done by inserting a business card between the sash and the frame when closed. The card should be held firmly by the compression. If the card falls out, this indicates a lack of compression and may be caused by frame roll. The affected area of compression loss will need to be shimmed behind the frame in order to correct the frame roll. Refer to Section 3D & 3F for any remedial work that may need to be done to correct frame roll. NOTE: This must be done before finalizing the install, check both interior and exterior. 3H Frame roll caused by insufficient shimming will cause compression loss to the frame gasket
4FINAL ADJUSTMENTS A. Verify the reveals are consistent on the operable panel to the frame. B. Adjust the operable panel by first making the lateral adjustments on the hinge hardware. C. Locate the cover cap screw and remove it. With the door in the open position, use a 3mm Allen key. Be careful while removing the screw as this will release the main cover cap and could potentially drop on the floor damaging the finish of the cover. D. Release the fixing screws by using a #3 Phillips screwdriver to take pressure off the adjustment bolt. Adjustment can be made use a 4mm Allen Key. Turn the adjustment bolt clockwise to move the door away from the hinge side and towards the lock side and counter-clockwise to move the door closer to the hinges. Remember to re-tighten the fixing screws once adjustment has been made and replace the cover cap. 4C 4D E. Raise or lower the door sash panel by first removing the top cover cap by applying pressure on the rear surface as shown, you may need to pry it gently to remove it. Do this for the bottom caps as well. Release all three hinge locking cams with the door in the open position Use a 3mm Allen key and release the locking cams on all three hinges by turning counter-clockwise (highlighted in red). F. Adjust the height screw by using a 3mm Allen key and turn clockwise to raise the door and counterclockwise to lower the door. Use one hinge to adjust the height and then snug up remaining hinge screws. Once the desired height is achieved return the locking Cam to the locked position and place cover back on. 4E 4F
8/7/17 4 FINAL ADJUSTMENTS (CONTINUED) G. Operate the panel and verify the door freely opens and locks properly. After adjusting the panel with consistent reveals you may need to adjust the rollers. The roller (sash locking point) must engage with the frame keeper (frame locking point) correctly to lock properly. The roller may need to be adjusted higher or lower depending what is required. H. Install the final frame roller fasteners and set the frame roller to the final permanent position. The additional fasteners will be in an adhesive envelope and applied to the interior glass surface. NOTE: All rollers must engage to lock properly. Verify all locking points on the door before finalizing the installation. SASH KEEPER I. FRAME ROLLER KEEPER & ROLLER ENGAGEMENT Verify door and lock operation. All reveals on the door shall be consistent and all gaskets fully engaging. Verify both gaskets are compressed and no gaps or voids are present. If keyed the keys to the cylinder will be in an adhesive envelope and applied to the interior glass surface. NOTE: It is the responsibility of the installer to verify the door operates and locks correctly; adjustments are required by the installation company to finalize the install. Follow ASTM E 2112 standard practices for a quality install. Please contact VPI for any assistance or training with our product.
5Additional Information REMOVAL OF OLD WINDOWS, DOORS OR SKYLIGHTS Follow the EPA s Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule (RRP Rule) which requires that firms performing renovation, repair, and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities and pre-schools built before 1978 have their firm certified by EPA (or an EPA authorized state), use certified renovators who are trained by EPA-approved providers and follow lead safe work practices. Visit for more information. When removing products from a building VPI recommends that you follow local rules and regulations for disposal. Whenever possible, avoid land fill disposal and reuse or recycle. Consult with your local recycling center for more information on programs in your area. CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS Remove labels and clean the glass, using a soft, clean, grit-free cloth and mild soap or detergent. Be sure to remove all liquid by wiping dry or use a clean squeegee. The vinyl frame may be cleaned as described above. For stubborn dirt, a "non-abrasive" cleaner such as Bon- Ami or Soft Scrub may be used. DO NOT use solvents such as mineral spirits, toluene, xylene, naphtha or muriatic acid as they can dull the finish, soften the vinyl and/or cause failure of the insulated unit seal. Keep door tracks clear of dirt and debris. Keep weep holes open and clear of obstructions. IMPORTANT NOTICE Because all construction must anticipate some water infiltration, it is important that the wall system be designed and constructed to properly manage moisture. is not responsible for claims or damages caused by anticipated and unanticipated water infiltration; deficiencies in building design, construction and maintenance; failure to install VPI products in accordance with VPI s installation instructions; or the use of VPI s products in wall systems which do not allow for proper management of moisture within the wall systems. The determination of the suitability of all building components, including the use of VPI products, as well as the design and installation of flashing and sealing systems are the responsibility of the Buyer or User, the architect, contractor, installer, or other construction professional and are not the responsibility of VPI. These guidelines are to assist applicators and ensure minimum standards are upheld. Final adjustments are part of the installation process and shall be the responsibility of the installer and general contractor. Some applications may require modifying the installation procedure. Consult architectural drawings and Building Envelope Consultant for structural and waterproofing details. Please consult with the manufacturer for installation modifications. Modifications must be approved in writing by Inc.
