Safety Rules As with all machinery, there are certain hazards involved with the operation and use. Using a machine with caution will considerably lessen the possibility of personal injury. However, if normal safety precautions are overlooked or ignored, personal injury to the operator may result. If you have any questions relative to the installation and operation, do not use the equipment until you have contacted your supplying distributor. Read carefully before operating the mortiser: 1. Keep the working area clean and be sure adequate lighting is available. 2. Do not wear loose clothing, gloves, bracelets, necklaces or ornaments. Wear face, eye, respiratory and body protection devices as indicated for the operation or environment. 3. Be sure that the power is disconnected from the machine before tools are serviced or an attachment is fitted or removed. 4. Never leave the machine with the power on. 5. Do not use dull, gummy or cracked cutting tools. 6. Be sure that the keys and adjusting wrenches have been removed and all the nuts and bolts are secured. 3

Noise emission Notes concerning noise emission: Given that there exists a relationship between noise level and exposure times, it is not precise enough to determine the need for supplementary precautions. The factors affecting the true level of exposure to operators are clearly the amount of time exposed, the characteristics of the working environment other sources of dust and noise, etc. for example, adjacent machines affect the level of ambient noise. It is possible that exposure level limits will vary from country to country. 6 Accessories Wrench Chuck type Veskot Receiving your machine Note: It is probable that a third party will deliver your machine. Before you unpack your new machine, you will need to first inspect the packing, invoice and shipping documents Box top removed supplied by the driver. Ensure that there is no visible damage to the Mortiser in packing box packing or the machine. You need to do this prior to the driver leaving. All damage must be noted on the delivery documents and signed by you and the delivery driver. You must then contact the seller [Laguna Tools] as soon as practical. If damage is found after delivery, contact the seller as soon as practical. Unpacking your mortiser: To unpack your machine you will need tin snips, knife, screw driver [star] and a wrench. 1. Using the tin snips, cut the banding [if fitted] that is securing the box. WARNING: EXTREME CAUTION MUST BE USED BECAUSE THE BANDING WILL SPRING AND COULD CAUSE INJURY. Then remove the screws that secure the box to the base [row of screws around the bottom of the box]. 2. Lift the box off and discard. This may need two people. Or take the box apart sheet by sheet. 3. Using the knife, cut the plastic wrap and remove it. 4. Remove the boxes on the base of the box. Do not remove the machine from the pallet. The motor and mounting plate are not fitted to the machine and will need to be assembled prior to removing the machine from the pallet [This is covered latter]. 5

What you will receive with your machine Mitre gauge Optional Mobility mobility kit kit Mortiser with box removed Accessories Side stop main bar Introduction to your mortiser: This mortiser is designed to give you years of safe service. Please read this owner s manual in its entirety before assembly. Body The body of the machine is a welded construction manufactured from heavy gauge steel sheet. The body houses all parts of the machine. Work table The worktable is mounted onto the body in a fixed position and houses the job clamp, rods that are used as setting stops for the job and a plate mounted on the front of the table that acts as a reference stop for the job. 6

Motor and moving table The motor is mounted onto a plate that moves in all three directions and angularly. Horizontal and lateral movement is achieved with a gear stick type handle. Vertical movement is achieved by operating a geared handle. Loosening 2 nuts and moving to the desired angle with the aid of a lever achieves angular movement. Stops are provided that limit the travel of the table both laterally and horizontally. An indexing facility is provided that allows you to drill holes at 16, 22, 25 or 32mm pitches. The chuck is mounted to the spindle of the motor. Assembly and set up: Where to locate your mortiser Before you remove your machine from the pallet select the area where you will use your machine. There are no hard and fast rules for its location but below are a few guidelines: Stop pin Mounting plate rollers 1. Ensure that there is sufficient clearance all round the machine, as you will have to have access to the back of the machine. 2. Adequate lighting. The better the lighting the more accurate and safely you will be able to work. 3. Solid floor. You should select a solid flat floor, preferably concrete or Motor mounting something similar. plate rollers 4. Close to power source. 5. Provide for a place that will be suitable for storing finished products and blanks. Assembling the motor and mounting plate The motor and mounting plate are not assembled to the machine. They are removed from the machine prior to shipping because the assembly is heavy and could cause damage to the movement mechanism during transport. To assemble the motor and mounting plate, you will need two people, as the assembly is heavy and awkward. Take Motor mounting plate fitted 7

care not to stress or damage the wiring during assembly. Lift the mounting plate and slide it onto the first set of rollers. Tip the mounting plate so that it is lifted over the split pin [fitted on the lower plate] that is used as a stop. This may take some jiggling. A second way that you might find easier is to gently knock the pin down so that it is not stopping the mounting plate from moving forward. After the mounting plate is fully engaged on both sets of rollers, knock the pin back up so that it is again acting as a stop and located between the two sets of stop rings. With the motor fitted, you can take the machine off the pallet. There are two recommended methods. Fit the optional mobility kit and roll the machine down a temporary ramp, or lift the machine off the pallet with a forklift truck / hoist. Removing machine with a forklift truck or hoist 1. Remove the base mounting bolts that secure the machine to the base. 2. The machine can be lifted using a forklift truck by using a SLING, with a lifting capability of 1,000 Kg [2,200lb] 3. Remove the pallet and lower to the floor. Removing machine using the mobility kit: Fitting the mobility kit Mobility kit wheels 1. Tilt the machine and rest the machine on a 2 x 4. Repeat for the other end of the machine. 2. Slide the axel through the holes in the base of the machine. Ensure that there is a washer on either side of both wheels. 3. Lock the wheels in place on the shaft with the two lock nuts. A slot is provided at the end of the shaft to stop rotation while fitting the nuts. 4. Fit the two leveling feet to the other end of the machine in the base. Mobility kit lifting handles 5. Remove the two plastic setscrews that are located on the pillar of the machine and fit the two lifting handles. 6. Build a temporary ramp and gently roll the machine to the floor. Note: The machine is heavy and it may take two people to stop the machine from rolling too fast down the ramp. Note: The machine is heavy and if you have any doubt about the described procedure, seek professional assistance. Do not attempt 8

any procedure that you feel is unsafe or that you do not have the physical capability of achieving. Leveling the Mortiser After you have located your machine in its final position. You will have to level it: 1. Place a spirit level on the worktable. You will have to level the machine in both directions. 2. Adjust the leveling pads so that the machine is level and will not rock. 9

Cleaning the machine Remove the rust protection grease with WD 40 or similar solvent. It is important that you remove all the grease and re lubricate with a Teflon-based lubricant as Teflon has less tendency to attract sawdust and cause clogging. You should also wax the table as this also protects the cast iron from rust. Fitting other parts of the machine 1. Fit the table movement handle by feeding it through the bearing and screwing it into the lower bearing. 2. Assemble the clamp and fit into the table. The clamp can be fitted on either side of the machine into the threaded holes. Clamp Movement handle 3. Assemble the job stop and fit it into the hole in the table. The stop can be fitted to either side of the table. Dowel pin storage Miter gauge fitted to table 4. The miter Underside of miter gauge gauge is provided with a setting dowel, which is fitted into a threaded hole for storage. 10

5. Assemble the indexing barrel as shown with the screws provided, do not fully tighten, as you will have to adjust the position to suit the locking mechanism. Attach the locking pin hand grip to the end of the table movement handle and lock in position with the allen set screw. Assemble the locking mechanism as shown and adjust both the barrel and the locking mechanism so that the locking pin will engage and disengage freely. Dowel drilling attachment Dowel drilling attachment Electrical connection Note that the machine is not supplied with an electrical cord or a plug, as the type of cable and plug will be dependent on the installation. It is advisable that qualified personnel carry out the electrical installation. Ensure that the main supply corresponds with that of the machine. Use wiring suitable for the power and the length of cable that is needed for your installation. The machine is supplied with a CEE plug mounted on the machine and the corresponding socket that you can use to connect the main cable to. On the machine the yellow / green wire is ground, the other colored wires are power phase and it does not matter what color combination you use, (there is no neutral). Check that the spindle rotates in the correct orientation to the switch setting selected. If the rotation is incorrect, you need to swap locations of 2 of the power leads and it will change the rotation. 11

Fitting the electrical cable The CEE plug and socket are located under the control box. The electrical cable is fitted as shown. You will see a wire that is yellow and green or green; this is the ground wire, and the other colored wires are power. It does not matter what color combination you use. Green and yellow or green is ground, and all other wiring is power (there is no neutral). On 3-phase machines it does not matter what color combination you use. Green [yellow/green or green] is ground; all other wiring is power (there is no neutral]. If the spindle rotates in the wrong direction, you need to swap locations of 2 of the power leads, and then it will rotate in the correct direction. Releasing socket cover CEE plug and socket Before Starting the machine 1. Read and understand the instruction manual before operating the machine. 2. If you are still not thoroughly familiar with the operation of the machine, get advice from a qualified person. 3. Make sure the machine is properly grounded and that the wiring codes are followed. 4. Do not operate the machine while under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or if tired. 5. Always wear eye protection, safety glasses or a safety shield, and hearing protection. 6. Wear dust mask; long term exposure to the fine dust created by the machine is not healthy. 7. Remove your tie, rings, watch, and all jewelry. Roll up your sleeves and never wear loose clothing. Pic of the electrical controls You do not want anything to get caught in the machine. Stop the machine before fitting or removing a job. Operating the machine Machine test Now is the time to test the machine. 1. Check that there are no mortise bits fitted; it is far 12

safer to test the machine without the mortiser bits fitted. 2. Check that the red safety switch is in the fully out position. 3. Check that the machine is clear of all tools and other loose objects. 4. Check that all the adjusting and locking handles are tight. 5. Start the machine by pressing the green start knob. 6. Now is the time to check that all the safety switches are functioning correctly before you fit any cutters. 7. With the machine running, press the red emergency stop switch. The motor should have the power removed and slow down. 8. With the machine running, operate the red stop switch by pressing towards the machine. The motor should have the power removed and slow down. 9. If any of the safety switches fail to operate correctly, do not use the machine until the fault has been corrected. Machine stops The machine is provided with stops that limit the travel of the mortise bit. Lateral and horizontal movement is controlled with knurled rings that are moved into the required position and locked with a second knurled locking ring. You will find them on the sides of the moving plate. Motor travel stops The machine is provided with stop rods that can be adjusted to give the job a reference point to locate from. To adjust, loosen the clamp bolt, move to the required position and re-clamp in position. Moving the motor assembly vertically with a crank handle and locking in position control vertical position of the mortiser bit. Vertical movement handle Vertical lock 13

Lock nut To move the mortiser to an angle. Loosen the two clamp bolts that attach the drill unit to the body of the machine and rotate the unit with the aid of the handle. Care must be taken, as the unit is heavy. Angle adjustment Handle To fit a bit into the chuck, loosen with the allen wrench, fit the bit and retighten. Chuck Using the indexing unit 1. Select the pitch that you require [16mm, 22mm, 25mm or 32mm] by rotating the tube to the required pitch setting. 2. Engage the location pin by releasing the handgrip. 3. Drill the hole. 4. Release the location pin by operating the handgrip. 5. Move to the next pitch and releasing the handgrip. General Maintenance Keep your machine clean. At the end of each day clean the machine. Wood contains moisture, and if sawdust or wood chips are not removed, they will cause rust. We recommend that you only use a Teflon-based lubricant on the machine. Regular oil attracts dust and dirt. The Teflon tends to dry and has fewer tendencies to accumulate dirt and sawdust. Periodically check that all nuts and bolts are tight. Bearings 14

All bearings are sealed for life and do not require any maintenance. If a bearing becomes faulty, replace it. Rust The machine is made from steel and cast iron. All non-painted surfaces will rust if not protected. It is recommended that they be protected by applying wax or a Teflon-based lubricant. Clamp bolt Guide rod to roller clearance Guide rods and bearing wheels The clearance between the guide rods and the rollers may need adjustment with use. There should not be excessive clearance between the rollers and the guide rods, but they should also not be too tight on the guide rods. To adjust them, loosen the roller spindle-clamping bolt. With a wrench, turn the spindle, until the correct clearance is achieved, relock in position with the clamping bolt. The roller spindle is eccentric and when turned will change the clearance between the guide rod and the roller. Troubleshooting Machine will not start 1. Check that the start switch is being pressed full in. 2. Check that the red stop switch is fully out. 3. Check that the electrical power cord is plugged into the power outlet. 4. Check that the electrical supply is on [reset the breaker]. With the power disconnected from the machine, check that the wiring to the plug is correct. Check that the rubber insulation is stripped enough and is not causing a bad connection. Check that all the screws are tight. 15

The machine will not stop This is a very rare occurrence as the machine is designed to be fail-safe. If it should occur and you cannot fix the fault, seek professional assistance. The machine must be disconnected from the power and never run until the fault has been rectified. 1. Stop switch faulty. Replace the stop switch. 2. Internal breaker faulty. Replace the breaker. Motor tries to start, but will not turn 1. With the power disconnected from the machine, try to turn the spindle by hand. If the spindle will not turn, check the reason for the jamming. 2. Capacitor faulty. Replace the capacitor. 3. Motor faulty. Replace the motor. Motor overheats The motor is designed to run hot, but should it overheat, it has an internal thermal overload protector that will shut it down until the motor has cooled, and then it will reset automatically. If the motor overheats, wait until it has cooled and restart. If the motor shuts down consistently, check for the reason. Typical reasons are dull cutting tools, motor cooling fan clogged or faulty, overfeeding the job and excessive ambient temperature. Squeaking noise 1. Check that the motor cooling fan is not contacting the fan cover. 2. Check the bearings. Spindle slows down during a cut 1. Dull cutting tools. Replace the tool or have it re-sharpened. 2. Feeding the wood too fast. Slow down the feed rate. Machine vibrates 1. Machine not level on the floor. Re-level the machine ensuring that it has no movement. Accessories The following accessories are available from Laguna Tools: - Various drills and cutting tools. - Toolbox - Additional job clamps. - Work Benches - Additional job setting stops - Tool cabinet [floor standing]. 16
