4 PREPARATION Preparation is one of the most important jobs undertaken when preserving or enhancing timber. A poorly prepared or unclean surface will compromise the performance of any top coat you may apply, so it s important to follow all the relevant product preparation and application guidelines to get the best outcome for your timber project. Rapid Prep For new, unweathered exterior timber Simply Woodcare Rapid Prep is a dual-function, purpose-built application for new, unweathered exterior timber. Rapid Prep efficiently cleans, removes surface tannins, dirt, extractives, and possible mill glaze allowing for the application of finishing coats within 24 hours once dry. When cleaning weathered grey timber, let the surface soak for at least 30 mins by wetting with water prior to cleaning. For severely weathered grey timber a repeat application may be necessary. 7 Simple Steps to the Perfect Exterior Finish Timber preparation is vital for the performance of exterior timber coatings. For best results we recommend the removal of all unidentified previous coatings. 1 Clean OR Weather and Clean Clean new, bare, unweathered timber with Simply Woodcare Rapid Prep to remove surface tannins, dirt and extractives. Weather Weather timber for a minimum of 6 weeks to allow for natural leaching of tannins and extractives. Regularly hose the timber during this period to assist the leaching. Clean Clean with Simply Woodcare Wood Cleaner. This will also rejuvenate grey weathered timber. 2 Water Penetration Test 1. After cleaning sprinkle water onto the surface to identify if your timber is ready for coating. 2. Ensure the water penetrates the timber. 3. If the water doesn t penetrate and beads on the surface a repeat application of the cleaner is required. 3 Calculate Calculate the square metre area that you are coating to ensure that you have the correct amount of product for your project. This will help you achieve the expected lifespan from your timber finish. The example below is based on a deck 6m x 5m: 1. Calculate your decking area, 6m x 5m = 30m² 2. Divide 30m² by coverage rate^, (10m²/L) = 3L 3. You need 2 coats, 2 x 3 = 6L 4. 6L is required to achieve optimum coverage ^ Coverage rate can vary between products and can be found on the can or product data sheet. 4 Apply Ensure all surfaces are clean, bare, dry, and free of any contaminates prior to application. Apply your selected coating when the weather conditions are favourable. Ensure rain is not forecast for 24 hours. Use good quality brushes and application tools. When applying to decking or weatherboards work 2-3 boards along the length at a time. Ensure that all exposed edges and end grain are coated. EXTERIOR TIMBER FINISHES 7

Decking Oil preserves and protects the timber from the destructive effects of weathering. Decking Oil is also tintable to a wide range of colours, making it ideal for use as a decking and exterior stain. 13 Simple Steps to a Stunning Interior Finish It is important to apply your chosen finish with quality tools including the correct brushes, rollers or applicators to suit the project and product, to ensure you acheive the best possible result. 1 Sand Sanding is key to achieving a professional finish! Always sand in the direction of the grain, using the right grade of sandpaper until smooth to touch. Remove dust with a tack cloth, damp cloth, or vacuum. Ensure that timber is clean and free of wax grease and contaminants before proceeding to the next step. TIP: For uneven flooring we recommend sanding in a diagonal direction with 80 grit first and then finish with a fine sandpaper (240 grit), sanding in the direction of the grain. 2 Fill If necessary, we recommend filling nail holes, cracks, and knot holes in the timber with Simply Woodcare Wood Putty matched to the timber colour after the first coat has been applied. 1. Apply putty with a recommended filling applicator, wiping off the excess with a soft damp cloth. 2. Allow to dry and sand smooth. 3 Apply Stir the product with a broad flat stirrer prior to application, including the bottom of the can. DO NOT SHAKE. Ensure you follow specifications for coverage and application procedures. Apply in the direction of the timber grain along the length of the board, coating 3-4 boards at a time. Ensure there is good ventilation/airflow after the coating has tacked off. Allow to dry then sand smooth. Ensure the surface is vacuumed thoroughly in between coats. 14 WATER BASED INTERIOR FLOOR FINISHES Aqualac Floor This tough, non-yellowing, interior water-based urethane dries quickly with minimal odour to a completely clear finish. Excellent scratch and scuff resistance makes it ideal for cork, parquetry or timber floors and bench tops. Being a water-based formulation, it dries extremely fast and offers the convenience of water wash-up. 15 OIL BASED INTERIOR FLOOR FINISHES Easy Floor Simply Woodcare Easy Floor features a modified urethane formulation that delivers excellent elasticity and a tough, durable finish that s suitable for high traffic areas. The chip-resistant finish provides superb resistance to abrasion, scuffing and wear-and-tear, while also resisting alcohol spills. Unlike many traditional oil-based finishes, Easy Floor doesn t become brittle over time. It s especially suitable for pine, ash and other light coloured furniture timbers and is available in a range of modern and traditional colours. Simple and easy to apply, our wood stain should be over-coated with a Simply Woodcare water-based or oil-based clear to protect the surface and increase the durability and longevity of the stain.
