3 1 Expertise of dinar banknotes In 2017, expertise of suspected counterfeit banknotes showed that a total of 5,834 notes were indeed counterfeits, which is 5.5% less than in the same period last year, when a total of 6,171 false banknotes were detected. The face value of the counterfeits detected fell by 22% (RSD 7,126, from January to December 2017 vs. RSD 9,133, in the same period of 2016). Table 1 shows the denomination structure of detected dinar counterfeits. Percentage-wise, these three denominations made up 96.9% of the overall number of dinar counterfeits. In percentage terms, these four denominations accounted for 99.9% of all dinar counterfeits. 5 When comparing the number of detected dinar counterfeits with that of genuine dinar banknotes currently in circulation, which counted million pieces as at 31 December 2017 (amounting to RSD billion, as shown in Table 3), we arrive at a conclusion that 17.6 banknotes in every 1 million of genuine circulating banknotes were fake i.e. RSD 36,006 worth of counterfeits in every RSD 1 billion. Their currency and denomination structure is presented in Table 4. Movements in the number of the most frequently detected euro counterfeits 50- and 100-euro banknotes over the last eight years are presented in Chart 4. 4

6 Chart 4 The most frequent euro counterfeits 1,200 1, ,081 1, euro 100-euro In 2017, a total of 146 counterfeit US dollar banknotes were detected, which is 31.5% higher than last year, when 111 dollar banknotes were established to be counterfeits. Of this, it was almost exclusively the 100-dollar note that was falsified. Chart 5 shows the trend in the number of 100-dollar counterfeits over the last eight years. In nominal value terms, the share of individual currencies in total detected foreign currency counterfeits and their percentage vis-à-vis the figures from a year earlier are best illustrated if expressed in euros, 1 as shown in Chart 6. 1 For conversion of other currencies into euros, for the years of 2016 and 2017, we used the middle exchange rate as at 3 January
