1 9.2 HANDS ON Essential Question How can you count a group of pennies, nickels, and dimes How can you count a group of pennies, nickels, and dimes Lesson Opener Making Connections Invite children to tell you what they know about how to find the value of coins. What is the value of a nickel (5 cents) What is the value of a dime ( cents) Using the Digital Lesson You may wish to model the stated problem with coins. Learning Task Direct children to think about the sums of the values of different coins. What did the kids in the story buy (a soccer ball) How much did the kids pay (17 cents) What are they trying to find (What coins make up 17 cents) Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills Number and Operations1.4.A Identify U.S. coins, including pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters, by value and describe the relationships among them 1.4.B Write a number with the cent symbol to describe the value of a coin; Also 1.4.C MATHEMATICAL PROCESSES 1.1.A Apply mathematics to problems 1.1.C Select tools, technology, and techniques Are You Ready Access Prior Knowledge Use the Are You Ready 9.2 in the Assessment Guide to assess children s understanding of the prerequisite skills for this lesson. 2 Explore Hands Read the following problem aloud. Juan has some pennies, nickels, and dimes. He chooses one kind of coin to show 20 cents. How can Juan show 20 cents Have children draw to show how Juan might use only pennies, only nickels, or only dimes to show 20 cents. 20 pennies, 4 nickels, or 2 dimes Discuss the different solutions. On Did each child in the class show the same number of coins Why or why not No; Possible answer: Not everyone chose the same coin to use. Each kind of coin has a different value, so you need different numbers of each coin to make the same amount. 2 dimes have a total value of 20 cents. What if I trade one dime for pennies What is the total value of my coins now Explain. 20 cents; Possible answer: pennies have the same value as 1 dime, so the total value of a group of 1 dime and pennies is the same as a group of 2 dimes. 9.2 HANDS ON Essential Question Explore Use coins to show the problem. Draw and label the coins. Possible answers: 20 pennies or 4 nickels or 2 dimes. How can you count a group of pennies, nickels, and dimes Number and Operations1.4.A, 1.4.B Also 1.4.C MATHEMATICAL PROCESSES 1.1.A, 1.1.C Hands On Math Talk Mathematical Processes Use Math Talk to focus on children s understanding of how the value of coins relate to each other. Math Talk: Possible answer: 1 dime or 2 nickels have the same value as pennies. They all have a total value of cents. FOR THE TEACHER Juan has some pennies, nickels, and dimes. He chooses one kind of coin to show 20 cents. How can Juan show 20 cents Math Talk Mathematical Processes What coins have the same value as pennies Explain. Module 9 three hundred twenty-seven 327 English Language Learners Leveled Activities Beginning: Activity 53 Intermediate: Activity 2 Advanced: Activity 26 Advanced High: Activity 16 ELPS 1.F, 3.B.3, 4.C.2 2.D.2, 2.E.3, 3.E, 3.F.2 1.A.1, 3.G.1, 4.C.4 2.C.3, 2.D.2, 3.F.1 thinkcentral.com for the ELL Activity Guide containing these leveled activities. 327 Module 9 ELL Language Support ELPS 1.D, 3.G.2, 4.C.2 Strategy: Model Concepts Visual / Verbal Small Group Materials: Coins: pennies, nickels, dimes (see eteacher Resources), advertisements for small priced items Have children look at advertisements for items that are less than $1.00. Have them identify how much each item costs. Pick an item. Show children a row of coins (dimes, nickels, pennies) that total that amount. Ask children how to count the coins to determine if you have enough money to buy the item. If they have trouble counting the group, put pennies below each dime and 5 pennies below each nickel. Why would we put pennies below each dime and only 5 pennies below each nickel A dime has a value of cents and a nickel has a value of 5 cents. Repeat the activity with a different item.
3 Model and Draw Count to find the total value Share and Show Why would you start with the dimes total value Model and Draw Work through the model, showing how to count the coins by tens, then by fives, and then by ones. Have children count again and write the numbers as they count each coin. How are the coins arranged The coins are in order from greatest value to least value. Show children that counting money is more orderly when you start with the coins of greater value. Share and Show Will a collection with a greater number of coins always have a greater total value Explain. No, it depends on the values of the coins in the collection. Can two different collections of coins have the same total value Why or why not Yes, groups can have different combinations of coins that count to the same total value. Use the checked exercise(s) for Quick Check. Children should use their MathBoards to show their solutions Quick Check three hundred twenty-eight IF THEN a child misses the checked exercise(s) Differentiate Instruction with RtI Tier 1 Lesson 49 Enrich Visual / Verbal Small Group COMMON ERRORS Error After counting dimes, children may continue to count nickels by tens. Springboard to Learning Remind children to identify the value of each coin being counted. Materials: Coins: pennies, nickels, dimes (see eteacher Resources) Give children the following problem to solve: I have 2 dimes and 2 pennies. A friend gives me 1 coin. Now I have 27. What coin did I get a nickel Have children fill in their own word problems. I have and. A friend gives me 1 coin. Now I have. What coin did I get Have partners exchange problems and check the solutions by acting out the story. Go to Go to thinkcentral.com for additional enrichment activities in the Enrich Activity Guide. Lesson
4 Problem Solving If children answered the checked exercise(s) correctly, assign the exercises on this page. For these exercises, children write only the total value of each group. Children can use their MathBoards to continue to write values as they count if they need to. Problems These problems require children to use higher order thinking skills and/or multiple steps to solve the problem. For Exercise 7, children may trade 4 nickels for 2 dimes and have 5 coins: 2 dimes and 3 pennies, or they may trade just 2 nickels for 1 dime and have 6 coins: 1 dime, 2 nickels, and 3 pennies. For Exercise 8, children draw 4 nickels to show the same value as 2 dimes. Then children describe how a dime and a nickel are related. Go Deeper To extend thinking, challenge children to draw to show two different collections of coins that have the same total value as the group shown in Exercise 4. Have volunteers share their solutions. Problem Solving Karl has 4 nickels and 3 pennies. Show the same amount with fewer coins. Children should draw and label 2 dimes and 3 pennies. Also accept 1 dime, 2 nickels, and 3 pennies. 8. Multi-Step Elsie has 2 dimes. Tyler has four coins with the same value. Draw the coins Tyler has Math on the Spot Video Tutor Through the Math on the Spot Video Tutor, children will be guided through an interactive solving of this type of H.O.T. problem. Use this video to also help children solve the H.O.T. problem in the Interactive Student Edition. With these videos and the H.O.T. problems, children will build skills needed in the TEXAS assessment. Math on the Spot videos are in the Interactive Student Edition and at thinkcentral.com. Children should draw 4 nickels. Describe how a dime and a nickel are related. A dime has the same value as 2 nickels. Module 9 Lesson 2 three hundred twenty-nine LESSON 49 OBJECTIVE Count a group of pennies, nickels, and dimes. Find the total value of the coins.
