7 Educational Seminars Friday November 23rd, Saturday November 24th and Sunday November 25th David Bleicher--Kennedy Half Dollars-The coin you only thought you knew--friday November 23rd 11am-12pm, Macomb Room Kennedy half dollars are unique in many ways. It is perhaps the best example of American nationalism affecting coinage. Never before or again would the decision to create a coin be made so suddenly, new coins introduced so swiftly, or a design that should have been minted for at least ten more years get replaced so abruptly, all revolving around public sentiment toward an assassinated president. Join David Bleicher as we examine the coin s timeline, from its inception, design, and minting, along with its varieties, collecting, and the impact the Kennedy half dollar had on coin collecting. This presentation is a great start for newer to intermediate collectors, yet interesting enough to surprise the advanced collector. Dust off your Kennedy album and prepare to get re-introduced to a coin you only thought you knew. Ernie Nagy The Satire of Hard Times Tokens--Friday November 23rd 2pm-3pm, Macomb Room Hard Times Tokens were issued during the era of Andrew Jackson. This presentation will explore the economic environment which resulted in the need for coin substitutes; and the political environment which shaped the taunting mottos and legends on these pieces. If you appreciate both numismatics and history, you will enjoy learning more about Hard Times Tokens. Page 7

8 Les Rosik The Circulating Coins of The Second Republic of Poland from Saturday November 24th 1pm-2pm, Macomb Room This presentation will give a historical and numismatic perspective of the Warsaw Mint, and how it managed to start minting Polish coins once again after Poland regained it s independence. After World War I, I will discuss what happened to the Warsaw Mint during the years of Poland s captivity and which coinage was minted by the facility during those years. My presentation will also show which foreign state mints were contracted out to strike Polish coins during the early years of I will also show the circulating coins of Poland and discuss the non-circulating coinage during the Second Republic of Jeff Paunicka Advanced Currency Collecting Saturday November 24th 2pm-3pm, Macomb Room The currency marketplace is a dynamic set of pricing tools, collecting strategies and resource buying guides. It is constantly changing - which means, unless you are involved day to day with the market, you are missing something that can cost you in the long run. This presentation is designed to review the fundamentals of currency collecting yet identify the advanced tools to use and key tips in the market that will help you build a winning collection and save you while doing so. If you re seriously into collecting currency, you need to experience this presentation. It will be a valuable 45 minutes you do not want to miss. Dany Rothfeld Errors on Small Size U.S. Banknotes--Saturday November 24th 3pm- 4pm, Macomb Room This power point presentation will show how our currency is printed at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP). We will also discuss some of its history. I will show various error notes from my collection. The presentation will explain how these error occurred. Questions can be asked at any time. Page 8

He ll use examples from his own collecting days to illustrate the importance of available information, how the game is played, how to get along with the competition, how to work with the key players, and even how to more fully appreciate the notes that you own. Bob Campbell--How to detect Artificial Toning, Artificial Frosting, and re-proofing--sunday November 25th 11:30am-1pm, Macomb Room Past American Numismatic Association President Bob Campbell is a specialist in toning and also counterfeit coin detections. 10 CSNS Educational Seminar (continued) Bob Campbell--How to Make a Rare Coin Deal--Sunday November 25th 1:30pm-3pm, Macomb Room Bob Campbell is known through the industry as one of the best negotiators and manipulators in the business of rare coins. Learn the secrets of how to understand body language and the art of understanding speech and timing to get the lowest price possible. This talks about big sharks eating little sharks. It s not for the timid and if you practice the principles that you will learn here it will save you thousands of dollars in your general life on all types of purchases. He owns and operates All About Coins, Inc. in salt Lake City, Utah. His shop is considered one of the finest if not the best in the country. Peter Huntoon--Creation of Money during the Great Depression: the Greatest Tectonic Shift in Federal Currency in the U.S. History--Sunday November 25th 3pm4:30pm, Macomb Room The collapse of the American economy leading up to the election of Franklin Roosevelt in 1932, was one of the most dangerous events in the U.S. history. To crawl back from the brink required a bold overhaul of our monetary system. The groundwork that laid the foundation for eventual recovery was accomplished by FDR s Treasury within two years, which required redefining exactly what constituted U.S. money. The gold standard was abandoned and gold was confiscated from the public. This presentation will take you through these events with a focus on how U.S. currency was restructured, which was an important step that eventually allowed the U.S. to become the dominant economic powerhouse of the world by the end of WW II. Collectors will see just what happened to their small size currency during this tumultuous period and why the various Series of 1934 currencies were launched. Page 10
