1 Columbia College Hollywood Career Development Office DIVERSITY & TALENT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS Updated 8/15/16 CBS Corporation - Writers Mentoring Program As part of its ongoing commitment to create additional access for writers of diverse backgrounds CBS Diversity Institute has launched a different kind of writers program which highlights one of those paths. The focus of this six month program is on opening doors: providing opportunities to build relationships with network executives and showrunners; to support new and emerging writers in their efforts to improve their craft; and to develop the interpersonal skills necessary to break in and succeed. Directing Initiative The Directing Initiative will select directing candidates for episodic network television and match them with directors of CBS Television Network drama and comedy series. The goal is to bridge the gap for those talented directors attempting to break into network television. Writers Fellowship As part of on-going efforts to broaden the diversity of talent emerging from the USC School of Cinematic Arts, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the CBS Television Network united in 2005 to create the NAACP/CBS Master Writing Fellowship, a partnership that supports, encourages and educates new voices within the industry. Daytime Casting Initiative CBS Diversity Institute and Casting have undertaken a new and unprecedented initiative to enhance access for diverse actors who are 18 years and over to the talent pool for the daytime dramas, THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS and THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL. Fox - FOX Writers Intensive The FOX Writers Intensive (FWI) is an initiative designed to nurture experienced writers with diverse voices, backgrounds and life experiences and creates a solid pipeline of well-rounded talent for potential staffing on FOX television shows, films and other FOX entertainment platforms. NBCUniversal - NBCUniversal Short Film Festival The NBCUNIVERSAL SHORT FILM FESTIVAL seeks the next generation of writers, directors, producers & actors, while celebrating innovative storytelling from diverse and inclusive backgrounds, including female writers & directors, the LGBTQ community, and performers with disabilities.with a high-profile list of judges and partners including, Comcast, NBC, Panavision, USA Networks, Telemundo, Bravo, Universal Pictures, E!, SAG-AFTRA, PGA, WGAW, WGAE, DGA, Hulu, The Hollywood Reporter & Variety, this bicoastal festival provides a unique opportunity for outstanding talent to have their work introduced to key decisions makers from the entire NBCUniversal family as well as agents, managers, producers, and other industry players.

2 NBC Writers On The Verge Writers on the Verge is a 12-week program focused on polishing writers and readying them for a staff writer position on a television series. We are looking for writers who are almost there but need that final bit of preparation with their writing and personal presentation skills. Standup NBC StandUp NBC is a nationwide search for stand-up comedians of diverse backgrounds, which started in This initiative allows comedians from across the country to showcase for key industry players at NBC and industry-wide. Diverse Staff Writer Initiative NBC encourages diversity among its writing staffs by funding select staff writer positions, open to all scripted NBC Primetime Series, along with some series from our cable networks. In order to further foster diversity among writers, NBCUniversal provides funding for a diverse staff writer position on all scripted NBC Primetime and Late Night Series. These positions are filled with writers selected and hired by the Showrunner/Producers of each show, along with the guidance of the network and studio(s). Positions are generally filled during the March June staffing season. Late Night Writer s Workshop This NYC-based workshop consists of improv classes, as well as keynote speakers. The selected writers will create new sketch material and gain insight into the dynamics of a late night writers room, as well as learn about NBCUniversal s late-night & alternative lineup. Participants are given the chance to interact with key writers and producers from across NBCUniversal s late-night shows, as well as receive feedback on their material. Successful participants material will be submitted to NBCU s late-night & alternative executives, but writing assignments are not a guarantee. Directing Fellowship Program The NBC SCENE SHOWCASE is A 6 to 8 week workshop of original scenes by diverse writers, cast with up-and-coming actors and guided by directors of diverse backgrounds presented in a one-day live theatrical showcase for executives, producers, casting directors, and other industry professionals. The Sundance Institute Native American and Indigenous Program The Sundance Institute Native American and Indigenous Program is a year-round program to deepen the commitment to support Native American and Indigenous artists and talent. This program allows NBCUniversal to build relationships within the Native and Indigenous communities and raise awareness of the artistic opportunities available at NBCUniversal through its various Diversity Initiatives and Programs, while creating a pipeline for Native actors, writers and directors. Casting Apprentice Program An month paid rotational program designed for individuals of diverse backgrounds who aspire to join a casting office. Apprentices sit in the NBC Casting office, and are exposed to working in both a network and freelance casting office. Apprentices assist casting executives or directors with the day-to-day management of casting activities for a television production. The Apprentices gain exposure to top level programming executives and attend talent showcases, comedy clubs and other venues where talent is showcased. Writer s Assistant Program Launched in 2012, NBC Entertainment funds a writer s assistant position on 3 NBC primetime scripted shows. These positions are chosen by the showrunner of the respective show and provide the selected writer(s) the opportunity to be in a television writers room and assist in any ways necessary. 3 The ABFF Star Project is sponsored by NBCUniversal and is designed to discover & nurture fresh aspiring actors. Disney ABC - Writing Program ABC Writing Program has been lauded as one of the most successful writer programs in the entertainment industry. The one-year program is the only program of its kind sanctioned by the Writers Guild of America, West (WGAW). National Latino Media Council (nlmc)/national Hispanic Media Coalition (nhmc) Latino Television Writers Program The NLMC/NHMC Latino Television Writers Program has yielded the next generation of talented writers, including: Davah Avena (Medium); Gina Lucita Monreal (NCIS, Brothers and Sisters); Silvia Olivas (Jessie); Sierra Teller Ornelas (Surviving Jack); and Spiro Skentzos (Grimm). The five-week, Los Angeles-based, intensive program gives participants the opportunity to develop at least one television spec script under the guidance of an entertainment industry professional preparing them for writing program submissions, creative meetings and potential series staffing. Directing Program ABC Directing Program is one of the longest-running programs of its kind in the television industry. The two-season program has launched the episodic careers of several directors including Seith Mann (The Walking Dead, Elementary), Zetna Fuentes (Grey s Anatomy, Jane the Virgin) Nzingha Stewart (The Fosters, Pretty Little Liars) and Susan Vaill (Grey s Anatomy). Acting Program ABC Television Group s highly coveted Casting Project identifies/develops culturally and ethnically diverse talent and actors with disabilities by hosting a talent showcase each year in New York and Los Angeles. Former participants include ABC talent such as Liza Lapira (Super Fun Night, Don t Trust the B---- in Apt 23), Jorge Garcia (LOST), Dania Ramirez (Devious Maids) and Carrie Ann Inaba (Dancing with the Stars). Selected participants perform live, one-act vignettes for casting directors, talent agents, managers and other industry professionals. The showcases are produced in partnership with AFTRA (American Federation of Television and Radio Artists), SAG (Screen Guild Actors) and Actors Equity Association. Warner Bros. - Warner Bros. Pictures Submission Call (The Black List) In order to further encourage diversity among our screenwriting ranks, Warner Bros. is pleased to partner with the Black List in this Submission Period to find a screenwriter for a blind script deal. The primary focus of this program is to provide access and opportunities for aspiring diverse writers. - Director s Workshop The Warner Bros. Television Directors Workshop is a brand-new initiative that will introduce up-and-coming directors to prime time television. With the backdrop of active Warner Bros. Television sets as the learning environment and top television directors, cinematographers and showrunners as the instructors, those selected to the program will have the opportunity to participate in a workshop that is unprecedented and unparalleled in the industry. Writer s Workshop The Warner Bros. Television Writers Workshop has been the premier writing program for new writers looking to start and further their career in the world of television. Sony Pictures Television - SPT Diverse Directors Program The SPT DIVERSE DIRECTORS PROGRAM provides access for highly qualified candidates from diverse backgrounds to potential episodic directing opportunities on scripted one-hour and half-hour SPT series. 4 Angeles-based program allows its participants to shadow veteran Directors Guild of America (DGA) directors on episodes of various scripted SPT series; after the successful completion of their shadowing assignment, Participants may be permitted to direct scripted webisiodes of SPT series. Viacom - Viacom Media Networks Spectrum Director Development Program (BET, CMT, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Logo, Spike, TVLand, VH1) The Viacom Media Networks Spectrum Director Development Program is an initiative that provides resources and opportunities for prospective participants in the program to develop their skills by shadowing established DGA directors while Working at the world s premiere basic cable company. The number is determined by the employment outlook for the coming year in the motion picture industry in NY. Directors Guild of America Student Film Awards The Directors Guild of America Student Film Awards for African-American, Asian-American, Latino, and Women Filmmakers are designed to honor, encourage, and bring attention to outstanding minority and women film students. Over 40 film schools from around the country participate in the program. Film Independent - Project Involve Project Involve is Film Independent s signature diversity program. It is a free, intensive nine-month program that cultivates new talent through a broad spectrum of support, including mentorship, master workshops, short film production, career development, and screenings designed to provide participants with access and a competitive edge in the marketplace. In an industry with no defined career ladder, Project Involve provides a vital bridge from film school to a career in the film industry helping talented filmmakers and emerging executives hone skills and professional relationships necessary to break in to the industry. 5 At WriteGirl, we match girls with women writers who mentor them in creative writing. Every year, we produce dozens of workshops, panel discussions and special events to help girls get creative, get through high school and get to college! Through one-on-one mentoring and monthly creative writing workshops, girls are given techniques, insights and hot topics for great writing in all genres from professional women writers. NHMC TV Writers Program - The NHMC Television Writers Program was created in 2003 and is an intensive scriptwriters workshop that prepares Latinos for writing jobs at major television networks. Modeled after the previously successful Hispanic Film Project, the program is a direct response to the lack of diverse writers in primetime network TV. To take NHMC TV Writers Program graduates to the next level, NHMC has also created the NHMC Pitching Lab and thelatino Scene Showcase. Alliance for Women in Media - The Alliance for Women in Media connects, recognizes and inspires women across the media industry. AWM is a diverse community whether type of media, job or global location that facilitates industry-wide collaboration, education, and innovation. Established in 1951 as American Women in Radio & Television (AWRT), AWM is the longest-established professional association dedicated to advancing women in media and entertainment. Quixote - P.A. Bootcamp - This program is a short, Intense, strict and rigorous course of training. Our goal is to mold you into the kind of Set P.A. and/or Office P.A. shows want to hire. Streetlights Production Assistant Program - Streetlights mission is to assist talented and motivated young adult minorities, many economically and socially disadvantaged, to achieve long term economic stability and career success. Since 1992 Streetlights has been bringing ethnic diversity to the behind-the camera-world of Feature Film, Television and Commercial production. Sundance Institute - Sundance Institute has defined diversity as one of the core values driving the Institute s work. The Diversity Initiative at Sundance encompasses our efforts in all programs of the organization to reach into new communities of storytellers and audiences across regions, genres, ethnicities, gender and orientation. American Cinema Editors - EditFest Los Angeles - americancinemaeditors.org The ACE Student Editing Competition invites approved applicants to edit and submit a set of video dailies. The entries are judged by a panel of professional film editors. Three finalists will be guests at the annual ACE Eddie Awards in February. The winner will receive a special Student Award and publicity in the Hollywood trade papers. ACE does not pay transportation or hotel expenses for out-of-town students. Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences - Student Academy Awards The Academy established the Student Academy Awards in 1972 to support and encourage excellence in filmmaking at the collegiate level. Past Student Academy Award winners have gone on to receive 46 Oscar nominations and have won or shared eight awards. They include John Lasseter, Pete Docter, Robert Zemeckis, Trey Parker and Spike Lee. Academy of Television Arts & Sciences - College Television Awards

6 The College Television Awards was created to recognize excellence in student work. The ceremony has grown to a nationwide competition that awards over 65 trophies in 16 different categories. National Association for Multi-Ethnicity In Communications (NAMIC)-Southern CA The National Association for Multi-ethnicity in Communications (NAMIC) is the premier organization that educates, advocates and empowers for multi-ethnic diversity in the communications industry. NAMIC helps facilitate the personal and professional development of individuals from entry-level to the C-Suite, and every level in between. Their membership roster is comprised of more than 2,400 professionals from both the business and creative sides of our industry who come from a broad range of disciplines representing cable telecommunications, broadcast, digital, film and print media. SAG-AFTRA - Annual SAG-AFTRA New York Broadcast Mentoring Program SAG-AFTRA provides a New York-based workshop for college students interested in learning more about career paths in the television, radio news, and broadcast industries.
