Pages: 3+ Characters: Martha, 35+, School Principal Andrea, 14 Beth, 35+, Andrea's mom DEFENDING MOM Written by David Dalton & Chad Schnackel Synopsis: Andrea's mom, Beth, is called into the Principal's office to discuss Andrea's suspension due to a fight she had with a boy. The discussion suggests Beth knows the boy's father and a possible relationship that may have prompted the fight. PERMISSION FOR USE Educational Use: YOU HAVE PERMISSION to use this script for acting classes & workshops, general auditions, audition workshops, school entry auditions, school scholarship auditions, personal practice, and school related competitions. Live Performances: YOU HAVE PERMISSION to use this script for any live performances or showcases where an admission is charged as long as writers are given credit in printed publication (programs, flyers, or and/or bulletins). NOTE: Most film festival organizations and their sponsors may not even allow a produced video/film of this script to be entered, since there may already be produced versions of this script by others, making it an "unoriginal film". We recommend you commission the writers of this script to create original content for your use only.
INT. PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE - MORNING sits at the desk of Principal THOMAS with her head down. Martha enters and takes a seat. Well, I called your mother. She will be here in a few minutes. You called my mother? Yes. We have to discuss your suspension. She answered the phone? Of course. Why, is she in the habit of not answering her phone? It s not even noon. I m surprised she s awake. Does she usually sleep in late? She works at night. I see. Martha looks into a file folder. It says here, she is a bartender and part time actress. A single mom. Okay. (beat) She must work the late shift? Yeah, usually. Aren t you concerned about being suspended? Yeah, I guess.
Andrea s mother,, enters the office. Martha stands and shakes Beth s hand and they both sit. Mrs. Walker. Thank you for coming down. What s going on? Are you hurt, baby? Andrea is fine, however, Tommy Carson has a black eye. A black eye? What did you do, Andrea? I was just defending myself. Oh my god... (to Martha) I never thought Andrea would be someone to get bullied, but I ve always taught her not to take crap from anyone. I understand, but Tommy never laid a hand on her. They just had words. Is that true, honey? He was saying things. The story I got from the other kids is that Tommy was making fun of her by calling you names. Me? Like what? It s not that important. It was just to push Andrea s buttons.
Well, can I at least get an idea of what he was saying? He was saying you were a stripper, a hooker...you know. Stuff little boys say. What s his name? Tommy Carson. Carson...Carson...His father is Anthony Carson, right? Yes. The councilman of our district. Of course. His parents are getting a divorce. Yes, I imagine Tommy is going through some issues. What s going to happen to my daughter? I m really sorry, Mrs. Walker, but we have a strict policy on any kind of violent behavior, we have to suspend Andrea for two days. Two days? That s the minimum. Huh. Well, what s Tommy s punishment? He will also be suspended for two days.
Okay. I guess I should have a word with Mr. Carson. Make sure...this doesn t happen again. Would you like me to call him for you? Beth and Andrea both get up and head for the door. They exit. No, I have his number. Okay, sweetheart. I m going to take you home. I m really sorry, mom. No, honey, don t apologize. I ll take care of everything. CUT TO:
