Biographical / Historical Ming-Ju Sun was born in the Shangdong Province of China and immigrated to the United States when she was about eight years old. She grew up in the Southwest region of the country. According to Sun, there is no one thing that inspired her to become an artist; she simply recollects drawing as long as she can remember. Her talent and interest in art came naturally. Her formal education includes a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. Later, she completed all of the coursework required to receive a Masters in Japanese Art and Textiles from the University of Maryland but did not complete her thesis. Her professional career as an artist began as a fashion illustrator at the Kistler-Collister retail shop in Albuquerque, New Mexico. From April 1972 until April 1979, she worked full-time for Garfinckel's Department Store in Washington, D.C. She signed her artwork with the name "Amie Ambrose" (a combination of her given name, Amie, which she received upon arrival in the United States, and her married name, Ambrose). After leaving Garfinckel's, she continued to work freelance for them until She also freelanced for Raleigh Stores and Butterick Patterns. With fashion advertising trending toward photographic images rather than drawings, Sun's career also transitioned. As Art Director for Raleigh and Garfinckel's, she directed photo shoots and photographed magazine advertisements and catalogs. After her career in fashion illustration and photography, she created a series of coloring books with Stemmer House Publishers featuring period clothing, costumes, Japanese wood block design, Chinese flora and fauna design, teddy bears, and other themes. She also created a series of paper doll books with Dover Publications that feature period clothing and costumes. Sun is still active in fine art; she describes her current work as using natural materials and rice sewn onto canvas. Sun currently resides in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Scope and Contents The collection consists of the fashion drawings and photographic work of Ming-Ju Sun as an employee of Garfinckel's Department Store and as an independent artist. The collection includes examples of her original artwork, newspaper advertisement tear sheets, and photographic slides of her work, fashion Page 2 of 7

5 illustration coloring books, fashion catalogs, and other items that provide information about fashion advertising. The bulk of these materials depict women's fashions and range in date from 1972 to This collection would be of interest to those researching advertising art in the 20th century, fashion and costume design, and fashion history. 9 Series 2: Fashion Catalogs Series 2: Fashion Catalogs, circa Series 2, Fashion Catalogs, circa , includes two fashion catalogs from Garfinckel's Department Store. The 1976 catalog was the first catalog published by Garfinckel's. It features Garfinckel's staff members as models (including Ming-Ju Sun on page 31). As Art Director for Raleigh, corporate owner of Garfinckel's at the time, Sun hired Ruven Afanador, an established fashion photographer and artist, to photograph the 1988 catalog. Sun photographed the images in the 1989 catalog.
