4 Week 2 Words with Short o blossom I can fold tissue paper to look like a flower blossom. concrete The artist created a beautiful sculpture from recycled sidewalk concrete and twisted wires. conflict The painting captures the conflict between the British and Revolutionary forces. costume She wore a grass skirt as part of her costume. cottage The carpenter lives in a cottage he built from logs. fond I am fond of this old quilt because it is made from scraps of my favorite old clothes. hostile Jon thinks painting graffiti on walls is a hostile act. mock We used mock feathers instead of real ones to make a headdress. modest The modest poet was embarrassed by the praise she received for her poems. novel My short story grew into a novel. pottery I am interested in pottery and other clay objects. probably I hear the musicians tuning their instruments, so the concert will probably begin soon. process The process of making bread involves many steps. proper A sculptor needs proper tools to fashion a statue out of marble. solemn We are respectful and quiet at the solemn service to dedicate the war memorial. 6 Week 3 Words with Short I, u artistic My sister is the artistic one in our family because she draws beautifully. assist He will assist by helping us create a family tree. blush I get nervous and blush when I speak before an audience. budge We tried to move the old trunk, but it wouldn t budge. culture We discussed the history and traditions of Mexico to help us understand Mexican culture. differ Our backgrounds differ because I was born in Russia and you were born in the United States. fundamental The way people behave is a fundamental, or basic, part of who they are. humble Plain and simple living suits my humble tastes. illustrate We decided to illustrate our family tree with drawings of our relatives. immense We were in awe of the immense height of the Statue of Liberty. inspire When children succeed at a difficult task, they inspire feelings of pride in their parents. instruct The artist begins to instruct his students by showing them how to mix paints. puzzle We will research and solve the puzzle of where our great-grandfather lived in Germany. rigid The dry, hard clay was too rigid to be molded. upward The tourists looked upward to the top of the tower. angel In the painting, the angel has wings and a halo. angle The painter s angle, or his particular viewpoint, makes the wings appear powerful. set Let s set our packages under a bench. sit We should sit on the bench and study the painting.

8 Week 4 Words with Digraph ch, tch attach My grandmother taught me to attach the quilt pieces by sewing them together. challenge Our challenge is to show the class that we can accomplish this difficult task. childhood My mother spent most of her childhood, from ages five through 12, in Oregon. chili My family s favorite recipe for chili includes beans, meat, and lots of spices. church The church in the village used to hold village meetings as well as Sunday services. clutch The nervous performers clutch the microphone tightly in their hands as they sing. exchange Students exchange information by telling each other what they have learned. fetch Please fetch Grandfather s diary from the bookcase and bring it to me. match My sister and I dress the same for family dinners so our clothes will match. research I did research online to find facts about life in Greece. screech Just as in Grandma s day, babies screech when they are hungry. sketch The artist s sketch is a drawing of our street in the 1800s. splotch A splotch of spilled paint made a stain on the table. stretch Stretch the canvas by pulling it tightly over the frame. switch Push the switch up or down to turn the light on or off. one One of my four grandparents was born in Hawaii. won We entered a contest and won a free trip! peace When the war was over, it was a time for peace. piece The statue is a piece of local history.
