3 WHITE SPOT NAMIKI PIPE QUAIL HISTORY The collaboration between Britain s Alfred Dunhill and Japan s Namiki dates back to the 1920 s, during the Art Deco period. It began as an experiment with exquisite Japanese lacquer being applied to the company s smoking accessories and writing instruments. The relationship was consolidated over the following decade, leading to the creation of authentic bilateral works of art, which have since become true collector s pieces. THE LIMITED EDITION WHITE SPOT NAMIKI PIPE QUAIL This beautiful Namiki pipe features a Quail bird employing the Japanese lacquer art of Maki-e, a traditional art form which is over 5,000 years old. The process of lacquering is a highly skilled art using Urushi, the purified substance made from the sap from the lacquer tree which is first used to draw the image on the bowl (or used for the base coat before drawing Maki-e). Among others, powdered gold is then applied to the drawing while the lacquer is still moist. In a painstaking manual process, layer upon layer is added finally resulting after many months of highly concentrated work by the artist in the finished threedimensional relief, which is then signed by the artist on completion. 4 For this edition it took the shared efforts of two master artists, Mr. Michifumi Kawaguchi and Mr. Yutaka Sato 14 months to complete the task, employing complex techniques and elaborate refinement of the ornamentation. The base of the pipe is flawless Briarwood, decorated with the fine lacquer work using the Hira Maki-e technique, in which the lacquered design is decorated with sprinkled gold powder and several additional layers of lacquer are then applied. After the lacquer is hardened, it is then burnished to reveal a flat relief design. The pipe, a classic Billiard shape in group 4 (4103), is fitted with an engraved gold-plated brass band. Due to its superb lacquer quality and refined Maki-e techniques employed the Quail pipe is categorised as grade C. The pipe comes in standard packaging and is accompanied by signed and numbered certificates. The edition is strictly limited to only 100 units world-wide (of which No.1 will be kept in our archive). Numbers 1 55 were made and signed by master Michifumi and numbers by master Yutaka. After having launched the Sakura design in 2015 and the Two Carps design in 2016, this year s Quail design is the last Namiki pipe, with no more additional Namiki pipe being planned in the coming years. Size Maki-e Urushi Gp. 4 medium to large size Literally translated as painting by sprinkling gold, Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decoration technique combining precious materials such as Gold, Silver, Abalone Shell, Turban Shell, Trumpet Shell, etc. with traditional Urushi lacquers. This tradition is over 1500 years old and regarded as the peak of Japanese decorative art. Lacquer made from the sap of the deciduous Urushi tree (lat. Rhus verniciflua). This tree grows in East Asia. As a tree will only produce up to 200 to 230 grams of Urushi over a 15 year period makes this material very precious. The lacquer is applied in numerous fine layers, each of which requires sufficient time to harden before it can be polished, often with ground charcoal. Only then the next coat can be applied and then the laborious process being repeated. Main Maki-e technique Hira-Maki-e (= Flat Maki-e): The lacquered main design is decorated with sprinkled gold (and/or silver) powders. Several layers of lacquer are then applied. 7 WHITE SPOT PIPES TERRACOTTA ARMY THE TERRACOTTA ARMY One of the greatest archaeological revelations of all time, the Terracotta Army is a collection of life-sized terracotta sculptures buried under a 76 meter tall tombmound in the shape of a truncated pyramid. The soldiers represent the army of Emperor Qin Shi Huang (259BC - 210BC) and were placed there to protect the Emperor in his afterlife. It is said that the work on the mausoleum lasted over 38 years and started in 246 BCE soon after 13-year old Emperor Qin ascended the throne, with up to 700,000 workers working on the site. This "spirit" army was discovered by a group of local farmers on 29 March 1974 in Xi'an, Shaanxi province, China, while digging a well. Qin Shi Huang Di ( BC) conquered six other major Warring States and united them to a unified China, became First Emperor of China in 221 BC and built the first Great Wall. The main part of the Terracotta Army is arranged in three giant pits, containing more than 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots and 670 horses, which form part of a much larger necropolis that is estimated to measure approximately 98 square kilometers. It is said that each soldier's face is unique. In 1987, the mausoleum, including the Terracotta Soldiers, was listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Site. 11 CHRISTMAS PIPE 2017 This Christmas pipe continues the 12-year theme The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, which began in 2011 and will end in It is based on the characters of the children s book The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by German author Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann and the famous ballet The Nutcracker by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. This being the 7 th pipe in the series, it depicts the Shepherds Dance, a central scene in the story. The pipe is a very elegant and remarkably light-weight group 4 Pointed Bent pipe (Quaint shape) (4) in Shell Briar finish with smooth top. It features a hallmarked 10mm Sterling Silver band engraved Shepherds Dance. The impressive pipe tamper is 53 mm long and crafted from solid Sterling Silver. It depicts in great detail the Shepherd and Shepherdess dancing between their sheep on the musical meadow.
