In 1923, Amelia became the sixteenth woman to receive a pilot s license. She set many aviation records including becoming the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. Amelia was the first woman and one of the few civilians to earn an Air Force Distinguished Flying Cross. Although she referred to herself as AE, Amelia became known as Lady Lindy. She worked as a telephone operator, tutor, fashion designer, and writer. In 1932, Amelia developed an aviation-inspired fashion line that was advertised in Vogue magazine. Before becoming a pilot, Amelia worked as a nurse's aid during WWI and then as a social worker in Boston.
