10 Coating Creping blade action on coating: Yankee Tissue Blade a. Blade runs on top of the coating poor creping, less softness, risk for chatter marks b. Blade runs in the coating matrix ideal, excellent creping, good blade and cylinder life c. Blade runs on yankee surface sparks, poor creping, bad blade life and wear, cylinder damage Paper sheet at this stage is dry (3-8% moisture) Needed: dry adhesion Necessary: for creation of micro crepe (softness) The paper web is soon released The paper web goes deeply into the blade gap angle Function of the coating/ adhesion Creping at low adhesion Creation of coarse crepe (macro crepe) Creping at high adhesion Creation of fine crepe (micro crepe) PAPERmatters! 2018 Conference 8

15 Conclusion: SOFTNESS Hard Facts?: The theories can all be validated as factual, but there is still much that is unknown There are so many influences on softness not one parameter alone is the key influence Understanding and optimising of all the machine variables is vital to a soft sheet Coating chemistry must be robust enough to tolerate variances in external factors Softness can now be mechanically measured and is not a human subjective value The challenges for softness are getting more complex with market demands, speed and productivity requirements, changing furnish and chemical restrictions influencing the process. Many parameters can be measured, computer modelled, internet 4.0 connected, but human experience and a gut feel are still required The holy grail of supersoft tissue is an ongoing challenge and changes daily! Wherever you are, count on PETROFER S PAPER TEAM!!! Expertise, Quality & Dedication We listen, We develop, We deliver PAPERmatters! 2018 Conference 13
