About us The Print and Imaging Team is responsible for producing most of the printed goods for the University of Chichester. We cater for the print needs of over 1,000 staff and 5,000 students.

2 About us The Print and Imaging Team is responsible for producing most of the printed goods for the University of Chichester. We cater for the print needs of over 1,000 staff and 5,000 students. Our responsibilities include producing materials for high profile, public University events such as open days, graduation ceremonies and more. In addition, we are able to offer our services on a commercial basis to companies, organisations and individuals in need of print work. Located at both University campuses, we would be happy for you to visit. At our Bishop Otter Campus we are located on the ground floor of the LRC and at our Bognor Regis Campus (our main location) we are in the Old Chapel. We have no minimum order quantities on many items and always endeavour to turn work around within 24 hours. * We offer a wide range of high-quality and specialised printing services at competitive prices. If your required product or style of printing is not included in this guide then please do ask - we may still be able to offer it. 3 4 5 Digital Printing Our modern digital printers allow us to provide a wide range of high-quality printed goods to customers. These production machines are flexible, quick and far more cost efficient than a normal printer or photocopier. Digital printing can be an excellent solution to your print needs.

6 Why digital printing? As digital machines don t have traditional printing plates they do not require preparing for each job and allow us to print on demand.

This is beneficial because we can produce unique or variable data documents without costly setup costs or wastage - a benefit we pass on to the customer. Digital presses also allow us to offer excellent value on short runs. As a result, we are able to offer a competitive service with no minimum order quantity. Paper options We offer a range of different paper stocks and finishes on our digital presses including satin, gloss and uncoated (matt) papers. Additionally, we have a number of specialised stocks including a large selection of coloured and textured papers. We can also sell paper to you directly, please ask us for prices. This is less wasteful and also saves our customers money. Photocopying We can digitally print products up to SRA3 size (450x320mm). We also offer a photocopying service for both colour and black and white documents. There is no minimum quantity. You are welcome to bring originals to us for copying.

8 Stationery We can supply high-quality stationery materials to individuals, groups and businesses. There is no minimum order so you can request as many or few items as required for a given purpose.

NCR - Duplicate Printing NCR printing allows us to create documents which have multiple sheets. The top sheet can then be written on and the text is copied onto the sheets below. We can supply NCR in a variety of sizes and colours and with different numbers of sheets. These products can either be glued into pads or supplied as individual forms. Options include simple addresses and postmarks as well as attractive logos and designs. Folders We can produce professional looking folders with your logo and artwork. These are usually supplied with internal plastic pockets to keep documents secure. Scanning We can scan documents for you as a PDF or another file type as required. Once scanned, documents can then be printed, copied to storage or sent to your address. Please note that the University needs to adhere to the Copyright Act. If you believe this will be an issue then please contact us to discuss your specific request.

Waterproof Vinyl Banners Waterproof Scrim Vinyl banners are perfect for outside use and for advertising events. We can also supply these with eyelets to allow you to hang them effectively. Canvas Canvas is a very thick, textured material. It is frequently used for art prints and other artistic purposes. Mounting onto wooden frames is available. Acetate Large format acetate prints are often used for plans and technical drawings. They are also popular for screen printing other artistic purposes. Lustre 260GSM Our most popular large format material. This high-gloss paper is great for posters or photos and can make any print look really professional. Singleweight Matt A lower cost alternative to Lustre which has a flatter finish. Singleweight Matt is also commonly used for plans and technical drawings. Repositionable Fabric Stickyback repositionable fabric can be placed on walls, floors, doors, desks and more. It can be removed or adjusted without leaving marks or residue. This is frequently used for attractive displays and eyecatching wall artwork. Matt Poster Board Matt poster boards are 3mm thick and are rigid and strong with a flat finish. These are great for signage or presentations.

The right choices at this final stage can ensure your work is noticed. Listed below are some of our most popular finishing options. If you require something which does not appear here then please contact us and ask. We will likely also offer it! Laminating The right finishing options can really make your work stand out We can laminate up to A0 size (841mm wide) and up to 30m long using our roll laminators. We also offer standard pouch laminates at A4 and A3 as well as smaller sizes. Laminates can be provided in gloss, matt or stickyback finishes to suit your needs. Booklet making Our booklet makers can produce booklets up to A4 size in large volumes. They can be trimmed at the ends to look neat and can also be supplied with a professional looking square edge. We can also manually saddle-stitch booklets in many sizes as required. Collating We can collate different documents into sets with our collating machine. These can be documents we have printed or things you ve supplied to us. Using our collating services can save you a lot of time! Creasing We can crease products like greeting cards so that they fold correctly. Our creasing machine also allows us to crease booklets to stop the spine cracking - this gives a better finish. Perforating We can produce perforated edges on documents so they can be torn cleanly. For example, we can print perforated tickets and tear-out forms. Folding We have the machinery to fold leaflets and other documents in a variety of ways including z folds, gate folds, half folds and more.

Binding covers We have a range of different coloured binding covers that we can use to make your work look even more professional.

Wire binding Great for easy reading because it can be opened out fully (ie. laid flat on a surface). Wire binds are ideal for workbooks, handbooks, music books, calendars and more.

Equally, binding is an excellent solution for documents which are too thick to be stapled. Whatever the need, we have binding options to suit. Binding covers We have a range of different coloured binding covers that we can use to make your work look even more professional. These include clear or translucent plastic, mock leathergrain and windowed covers. All of our binding choices come with these cover options included within the price. Comb binding Very similar to wire binding but with a plastic comb down the spine. These are also great for reading as they can be easily opened out fully. Please note: You do not need to add any extra margins for dissertation binding.

12 How to send us your job The easiest way to send us work is to attach it to an and send it to printshop@chi.ac.uk Please tell us exactly what you require, for example, size, paper type, and whether you want a colour or black and white print. Please also tell us which campus you d like to collect from. Tips for supplying print jobs... We always do our best to print anything sent to us, and never turn work away based on how it is supplied. However, there are a few things to consider which will make your documents look better and make the printing process easier. Is the page size set correctly? We can scale your work to fit any size page, but if you prepare it at the size you would like it printed this makes it less likely that your images will become pixelated or that there will be formatting problems. Have you got the correct file type? Saving as a PDF is the safest way to supply your files. PDF files are are frequently used by printers to help reduce formatting problems. Always try to export as a PDF. Is your text too close to the edge? For posters, booklets etc. it s best to leave around 5mm of space, free from things like text and logos, around the edge of the page. This minimises the risk of anything being cut off during finishing. For text documents standard margins are fine. Have you got the right number of pages? If you would like us to produce a booklet, programme or magazine you will need a multiple of 4 pages. If you have too few pages then people often make up the extras with blanks or with additional pictures. Please also send your file as individual pages, with page 1as your front cover and the final page as your back cover. We will put it together as a booklet or magazine for you. Do you need your image / background to bleed off the paper? If you require edge-to-edge printing you will need to setup your work so that the image/background is positioned off the page. Then in the properties/setup screen you need to choose marks and bleed. Select the trim mark button and input a minimum of 3mm in the bleed option. Finally, save out as a PDF and then check that the bleed extends within the trim marks, this will show you have added the bleed successfully.

CMYK Four colour process used in most printers Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key (Black). Collating Desired sequence of printed sheets. Crop marks The cut marks for the print finisher. Digital printing To print directly from a file, with no plates, to the printing press. Dpi Dots per inch, this is the resolution of an image. The higher the dpi, the better. We suggest 300dpi as your standard resolution. Duplex Printing on both sides of the paper. Gang up Printing multiple copies of a document on a bigger sheet to reduce costs. GSM This is a measurement of paper weight (grams per square metre). Imposition Refers to positioning multiple images or pages onto a larger sheet. Laminate To provide protection with a thin transparent plastic sheet on both sides of your printed sheet of paper. PDF Portable Document Format. This is the preferred way to submit your saved file. Perfect binding Individual pages of a book held together at the binding edge by glue. Personalisation Unique to digital printing. Each page can be printed unique, with different data. A traditional press cannot always do this cost effectively on shorter runs. Pre-press Checked by a computer operator to make sure the file is ok for printing. Ream A pack of paper. Resolution How sharp the image is. Like dpi, the higher the resolution the better the quality of the finish printed file. RIP Raster Image Processor. Used to covert files into a printable format. Saddle-stitched Stapling sheets together at the spine. Simplex Printing only on one side of the paper. Spiral bind The pages of the booklet are punched with holes and then held together with a plastic looped spiral through them. Uncoated Paper without a coating. No coating creates a rougher effect without any sheen. Conversely, silk or satin papers have a shinier finish. We aim to complete any request within 24 hours (weekdays). This time allows for any problems with the artwork or machinery. Despite this, jobs can often be done while you wait. If you have a large volume job this may require more time so please contact us for a more specific production schedule. We will contact you by or phone when your work is ready for collection. We will also supply a payment request which will itemise the work done. Payment Payment can be made on collection, or over the phone with the SIZ/reception on We accept cash, card or cheque (payable to University of Chichester). Invoice We can invoice your order through the University Finance Department on request. Collection Work can be collected from either the SIZ/reception (in the LRC) at Bishop Otter Campus or from SIZ/reception (in the LRC) at Bognor Regis Campus. Alternatively you can collect from the Print and Imaging department in the Old Chapel on Bognor Regis Campus. This depends on which site you have specified. If required, we can arrange for postage and delivery of your work to you (fees apply).
