1 LAB Name: Date Block Wonders of Water PURPOSE: To observe the behavior of water. MATERIALS: 450 ml beaker of water, a penny, a pipette, wax paper, a small graduated cylinder, a glass stirring rod, food coloring, paper towel, petri dish, paperclip, one small test tube with 5 ml of vegetable oil, test tube rack DIRECTIONS: Read the following procedures described for each station. Make a prediction for what you will see happen on your analysis sheet. Carry out the procedure at your table. Sketch and describe careful observations on your analysis sheet. Answer the Post-Lab Questions on your analysis sheet. PROCEDURE #1: The Penny Drop 1. Predict how many drops of water will fit on the head of a penny before it spills over the edge. 2. Counting drops as you go, use the pipette to carefully add drops of water to the top of the penny (head side facing up). 3. Observe and draw the side view of the penny. 4. Continue to add drops until water spills over the edge. 5. Record the total number of drops. PROCEDURE #2: To Wax Philosophic 1. Predict what will happen when you drag the edge of a pipette through a droplet of water on wax paper. 2. Using the pipette, form a small puddle (about the size of a dime) on the wax paper. 3. Place the tip of the pipette in the center of the puddle and slowly drag the tip of the pipette around the wax paper. 4. Observe and record observations. 5. When finished, dump the water puddle back into the beaker of water. PROCEDURE #3: Defying Gravity 1. Predict what will happen when a rolled paper towel is placed in a beaker with an inch of water. 2. Fold a paper towel in half, then roll it inot a tube which has a diameter smaller than that of the beaker. 3. Stand the rolled paper towel in the water in the 450-mL beaker. 4. Observe and record observations after 3 minutes. 5. When finished, the paper towel goes in the trash can at the front of the room. PROCEDURE #4: Stir It Up 1. Predict what will happen when water is slowly poured along the edge of an angled stirring rod into a beaker. 2. Carefully pour water from the small graduated cylinder along a glass stirring rod tilted at a 45 o angle into the 450-mL beaker. 3. Observe the path of the water. 4. Record results. N. 2 PROCEDURE #5: Dish and Clips 1. Predict what will happen when a metal paperclip is gently placed on top of a dish full of water. 2. Fill up the base of a petri dish with water all the way to the top. 3. After drying off the paper clip with a paper towel, gently set the paperclip on the water. This takes a steady hand! You may want to try using tweezers. 4. Observe and record your results. 5. When finished, wipe up your lab bench to clean up any spilled water. PROCEDURE #6: Much Color-ado About Nothing 1. Predict what will happen when 2 drops of food coloring is added to a test tube of water. 2. Predict what will happen when 2 drops of food coloring is added to a test tube of vegetable oil. 3. Add 2 drops of food coloring to each small test tube in your test tube rack. Do not shake the test tube! Be careful. Food coloring stains hands and clothing. 4. Observe and record the results. 5. When finished, pour the contents of the test tubes down the sink. Wash out both test tubes with SOAP & WATER using a test tube brush. Place the test tubes upside-down in the test tube rack to dry. 5 ANALYSIS QUESTIONS 1. What allows water to perform special properties like adhesion, cohesion, high heat capacity, high solubility, and capillary action? 2. Which property of water allowed the water droplets to build up on top of each other to create a dome on the head of a penny? 3. Which property of water allowed the water droplet to be dragged along the wax paper by the pipette? 4. Which property was shown when water climbed up the rolled paper towel? 5. Which property of water allowed the water to travel along the tilted glass stirring rod into the beaker? 6. Which property of water allowed the metal paperclip to be held on top of the water s surface? 7. Which property of water allowed food coloring to mix but not oil? 8. Water is necessary for life on Earth. If water molecules were NOT polar molecules, how would life on Earth be altered?
