2 EU Research Aims The Lisbon Treaty Chapter on Research and Technological Development Article 179 The Union shall have the objective of strengthening its scientific and technological bases by achieving a European research area in which researchers, scientific knowledge and technology circulate freely, and encouraging it to become more competitive, including in its industry, while promoting all the research activities deemed necessary by virtue of other Chapters of the Treaties. 2

3 EU Context: the 7 th Framework Programme Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) Research and Technology Development ICT theme accounts for over 9 billion Euro in FP7 Cooperation programme Cognitive Systems and Robotics is one of the main ICT research Challenges 3

4 Robots in a factory setting machines do what they are programmed to do although they have no understanding of what they do or why in a constrained environment this approach works well the programmer can encode the machine with sufficient knowledge about the task at hand 4

5 Robots in real world settings ~ less-constrained environments can be too nuanced, too complicated and too unpredictable to be summarised within a limited set of specifications from Prof J. Zhang, University Of Hamburg ~ there will inevitably be novel situations and the system will have gaps, conflicts or ambiguities in its own knowledge and capabilities 5

6 Future Vision: EUROP - European Technology Platform for Robotics Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) RTD strategy document developed by EUROP members in the CARE project (FP6) Industry-driven, based on extensive analysis of market development and future opportunities Commitment of all European stakeholders Short-term (2010), mid-term (2015) and long-term (2020) vision Public release in Brussels on July

7 FP7 Challenge 2 Objective 2.1.: Cognitive systems and robotics Continuity and progress: the long term focus on artificial systems which are: More robust More adaptive More effective More natural, cooperative etc Dealing with unconstrained, real world situations Important research questions: How pro-active or autonomous can / should a robot be? Can we categorise real world behaviour unambiguously through sensors? How can a robot recognise and deal with critical safety problems? How can we endow robots with high level cognitive skills? How can we make sense of raw data streams in environments not known to the sensors / robots? 7

16 ECHORD - European Clearing House for Open Robotics Development large-scale introduction of robotic equipment into research institutions three scenarios: human-robot co-worker, hyper-flexible cells, cognitive factory technology transfer between academia and industry through the solicitation of focused, small-size scientific research projects (experiments) Experiments can be proposed by industry, academia, or both Short proposals (maximum of ~25 pages, including all administrative data) Quick evaluation and negotiation Equipment for the experiment can be bought from a list with special prices Lower the entrance barriers (industry and integrators of SME size) Reduce the fear of contact with funding organizations First call for experiments under evaluation, second call to be launched soon More info: 16
