2 Dear TCS Families and Friends, Thank you for your deep and heart-felt generosity to The Country School. As I look back at my first year as Head of School and try to distill what makes The Country School the unique institution that it is, the word I keep returning to again and again is passion. Our students are passionate about what they are doing, whether it s in the classroom, on the stage, in the art studio, or on the athletic field. Our faculty are passionate about helping our students become the best they can be. And you, our families and friends, are passionate about supporting our school and its mission, as your generous gifts of time, talent, and treasure so clearly convey. As you read through this Report of Giving, I suggest that you give special attention to the testimonials provided by our alumni. If you want to see passion embodied, read what our former students say about their TCS experience and how it shaped their futures. I hope you will take both pleasure and pride in knowing that your generosity this past year has been instrumental in ensuring that another generation of students receives the gift of an education that lasts a lifetime. With passion and gratitude, Laurie Bottiger, Ph.D. Head of School Great effort has been made to ensure an accurate and thorough Annual Report for We apologize if any omissions or errors have occurred. If you discover a mistake, please notify the Office of Institutional Advancement ( , ext. 124) or advancement@thecountryschool.org. Thank You! Report of Giving

3 Mission Statement At The Country School, we are committed to creating an environment which is both academically challenging and responsive to the social and emotional needs of growing children. Encouraging close relationships among students and teachers and cooperation between home and school, we foster a feeling of family. The school community strives to nurture each child, valuing his or her unique gifts in an atmosphere of mutual respect. The traditional disciplines of reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, and foreign language form the core of our academic program. Because we seek to educate the whole child, the school is also committed to a vital arts program, strong offerings in physical education, and challenging opportunities for individual growth. Our teaching is spirited and promotes active learning. We provide experiences which are sensitive to different learning styles and stages of development. We guide students to discover their own strengths and develop confidence in their abilities to learn. Our program is rich and flexible, offering many pathways to success. We recognize our responsibility to prepare students to meet not just academic challenges, but personal and ethical ones as well. Our faculty provides leadership for character development, guiding students toward self-reliance. We encourage our students to look beyond themselves, to work cooperatively with others, and to serve their communities and the larger world. We expect much of our students, because we believe they have much to give. As we honor the creativity, sense of wonder and exuberance in childhood, we hope to stir in our students enthusiasm for learning as an exciting, lifelong activity. We work to equip each student with a solid mastery of essential skills, healthy selfesteem, and a clear sense of values. At The Country School, we strive to empower young people to reach their highest, not only in school but also in life. ********************************* Founded in 1955 and incorporated under the laws of the State of Connecticut, The Country School is a member of the National and the Connecticut Association of Independent Schools, and is accredited by the Commission on Independent Schools of the Connecticut Association of Independent Schools. 9 THE FOUNDERS PROMISE MAKING A DIFFERENCE! The Founders Promise Fund (FPF) is an investment in a child s future, awarding need-based scholarships to a wide range of students. There are two ways that our community comes together to support the Founders Promise Fund. The first is by making a gift to the Scholarship Fund. These donations are applied to TCS operations and immediately awarded to deserving students. The second is by making a contribution to the Endowment Fund. FPF Endowment serves as a scholarship savings account and is held in perpetuity, with only the interest income returned to TCS operations for scholarship. 17 PLANTING THE SEEDS: GIVING BACK When, during the Light Up the Stage Fashion Show, Rebecca Joslow 04 returned to campus to share some of her fashion designs, she knew she wanted to do more for her alma mater. Rebecca agreed to offer a Fashion Design Workshop for TCS students. She charged a nominal fee, and donated all proceeds amounting to $425 to the Founders Promise Fund for Scholarship so that other students could benefit from a TCS education, just as she had. I loved my TCS experience and I wanted to give back, Rebecca said. A parent had this observation about Rebecca and her efforts to support TCS: "Talent runs deep at TCS as does the idea of giving back. The seeds are planted at an early age." TCS AT WORK AND AT PLAY! Hats off to the parents of the Class of 2012 and supporters of the Light of the Stage Campaign Report of Giving 17
