4 About Plot Plot s the sequence, or arrangement, of causal events. A causal event s one that helps the reader understand why thngs occur n the story. In other words, a causal event leads to another event. PLOT DEVELOPMENT Plot descrbes the structure of a story. The way an author structures a story may vary, but the followng chart shows the man components of plot development. PLOT DEVELOPMENT CHART MIDDLE a c t o CLIMAX n f a l l n g a c t o r s n g n END Resoluton BEGINNING Exposton Story Elements 10 Educatonal Impressons, Inc.
5 BEGINNING: Exposton At the begnnng of the story the author usually provdes mportant nformaton about the settng and the man characters. Ths nformaton helps readers understand the story and s called the exposton. MIDDLE: Rsng Acton, Clmax, and Fallng Acton The protagonsts, or man characters, encounter several conflcts n ths secton, ncludng a central conflct, or problem. Wthout conflct of some sort there would be no plot. Rsng acton comprses all of the events that result from the conflct. These events descrbe the roadblocks to the solvng of the problem. The moment at whch the story reaches the greatest conflct s called the clmax. Fallng acton comprses the events followng the clmax. END: Resoluton, or Denouement Fnally, the conflct s resolved. The resoluton may or may not be postve. NOTE: Some sources put fallng acton n ths secton. PLOT DEVELOPMENT: Narratve Order CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER The sequence of events n a story s also called ts narratve order. Most of the lterature you read wll probably be n chronologcal order. In other words, events wll be descrbed n the same order as the order n whch they occur. FLASHBACK AND FORESHADOWING Although most stores are told n chronologcal order, authors sometmes nterrupt that order by usng technques such as flashback and foreshadowng. Flashback provdes a means of tellng readers about somethng that happened n the past. Ths past event should have a bearng on thngs that have happened or wll happen n the man sequence of events. Foreshadowng hnts at thngs yet to occur n the story. 11 Educatonal Impressons, Inc. Story Elements
6 Plot Development n the Story of Cnderella The followng s based upon Charles Perrault s verson of ths classc fary tale. BEGINNING Readers are ntroduced to man characters and the settng. MIDDLE The characters day-to-day routnes change because of the prnce s nvtaton. THE END EXPOSITION Cnderella lves wth her father, her step-mother, and her two step-ssters. Her stepmother and stepssters force her to lve lke a servant n her own home. *********************** RISING ACTION The prnce s messenger announces that all the lades of the household are nvted to the prnce s ball. Cnderella wshes that she, too, could attend the ball. Cnderella s fary godmother uses her magc to provde all Cnderella needs n order to go, but she warns her to leave before mdnght. The prnce falls n love wth Cnderella and asks her to return to the ball the next evenng. The next evenng she returns; however, she leaves late and loses one of her glass slppers whle runnng away. The prnce declares he wll marry the grl whose foot fts the glass slpper and sends a messenger to try t on every grl he fnds. CLIMAX The messenger comes to the house where Cnderella lves. Although her step-famly tres to thwart her efforts, Cnderella manages to get to the messenger before he leaves. FALLING ACTION Cnderella tres on the shoe and t fts. The messenger takes her to the palace. Cnderella and the prnce marry. *********************** RESOLUTION, OR DENOUEMENT Cnderella becomes a prncess. She and the prnce lve n the palace happly ever after. Cnderella, who s very kndhearted, allows her cruel stepssters to stay n the palace too. Story Elements 12 Educatonal Impressons, Inc.
