2 Introduction & Table of Contents This book features high-interest, on this date in history stories for the months of September, October, and November. There is an historical nonfi ction short story for each day of each month. The stories were written at an approximate reading level of grades 3-4. In some cases, proper names of people, places, and events, as well as other necessary descriptive vocabulary, may drive the reading level up a bit. The interest level is aimed at students in grades 5 and up who may not be reading at grade level. The topics chosen are not necessarily the most important thing to have happened on a particular date. The variety of people, places, and events highlighted in each story were chosen to appeal to a wide range of interests. Students will learn interesting historical facts while improving their reading and comprehension skills. ach story is followed by 8 skill-specifi c comprehension questions. Question formats include multiple-choice, fi ll-inthe-blank, and writing complete sentences. Skills focus on: main idea, facts, locating the answer, vocabulary, sequence, comparison, cause and effect, fact or opinion, conclusion, and inference. 3 September 1 DGAR RIC BURROUGHS ( ) On September 1, 1875, dgar Rice Burroughs was born in Chicago. He is best remembered as the author who wrote stories about Tarzan, the King of the Jungle. Tarzan is a famous fictional character. In his first book, called Tarzan of the Apes, Burroughs tells the story of a baby boy lost in Africa. The baby is given the name Tarzan and is raised by a family of apes. Tarzan lives with the wild animals and learns how to communicate with them. While still living in the jungles of Africa, Tarzan marries Jane, and they have a son named Boy. Burroughs wrote the first Tarzan story in Later, he wrote 25 more stories about Tarzan. The Tarzan stories were so popular that they have been written in over 30 languages. They have been made into movies, radio and television programs, and even comic strips. Millions of people like the story of the King of the Jungle. dgar Rice Burroughs died in 1950, 38 years after writing his first Tarzan adventure story. 5 September 2 DPARTMNT OF TH TRASURY On September 2, 1789, the Department of the Treasury was formed. President George Washington picked Alexander Hamilton as the first Secretary of the Treasury. At that time, Hamilton had five people working for him. Today, the department employs about 120,000 people. The main job of the Treasury is to handle the money of the United States government. The Treasury is divided into different branches. One branch is called the Bureau of ngraving and Printing. This department prints money. The United States Mint makes coins. The department that collects money from companies and people is called the Internal Revenue Service. Another branch of the Department of the Treasury is the Office of the Comptroller of Currency. A Comptroller of Currency is somebody or something that controls money. This office watches over all the banks in the United States. It makes sure that all Americans have a place to put their money. It also checks business forms that people fill out to make sure that they are being truthful. The Financial Crimes nforcement Network works to prevent people from doing illegal things with money. It collects data and looks at it to see if people are doing thinks like stealing, not paying their taxes, or not being truthful about how much money they have on business forms. The Department of International Affairs is in charge of watching over what happens with money issues throughout the world.
