3 ENG 10 Mr. Wheeler The Dream World of Winston Smith George Orwell uses dreams as a literary device frequently in the novel This device is employed for a number of purposes: to flashback important information about the character s past or history of the society to foreshadow certain events in the plot to create suspense to characterize Winston more thoroughly and deeply, especially on the psychological level PART A. Directions: Reread the assigned dreams listed. Summarize the key details of the dream in the space provided. Determine whether the dream functions as flashback or and explain your position. You are the critic: Is Orwell s use of dreams in this novel realistic and effective? Do the dreams seem a natural part of Winston s character? Or, is Orwell s use of dreams a convenient and unrealistic method to make a point or supply missing information about his character and plot? Do the dreams seem too obvious and artificial, and not a natural development of character?
6 ENG 10 Mr. Wheeler Your own dream life: Can you recall a dream you have had that contained memories or images from your past? Describe the dream and memory it contained. Can you recall a dream that contained a (premonition or prophecy) of the future? Describe the dream and the event it foretold or suggested. Have you had any nightmares or recurring dreams?
