1 Status of CUNY Faculty Publications in Disreputable Journals Since we ve last met Three articles were published in the NY Post regarding predatory publishing and conferences at QCC. Naming two faculty members who have participated in this practice. The NY Times, NY Post, CUNY Presidents, Brookhaven National Labs, the PSC, the Chancellor, and NY Inspector General were all notified of this issue by a group of concerned QCC faculty. The CUNY Office of Research has conducted an internal analysis of self-reported faculty scholarship data over the past 5 years to understand how prevalant this issue is at CUNY. 2 1

5 Next Steps Improve the quality of faculty self-reported data so that faculty scholarship reports = faculty CVs. Incentivize reporting. Turn the page from predatory outlets to performance enhancing outlets by launching an information campaign about what these are and where to find them. Department meetings are probably the best forum for discussion. Devalue the currency of PEOs by ensuring they are not wrongfully categorized as peer reviewed, and not considered during tenure and promotion decisions.
