FRINGE BIG NIGHT: Weds. 5 Sept: A Night at the Museum, Maritime Museum, Haigh Terrace, Dun Laoghaire, 9-11 p.m. Doors 8.45 p.m., gig at 9 sharp. Entry: 5 at the door. A briny night of sea-themed poems and music featuring award-winning poets with Dun Laoghaire links, concertina and fiddle tunes, sea shanties and songs. Poets reading on the night will be Joe Woods, Cliona O Connell, Mark Granier, Helena Nolan and Gerard Fanning. Music responding to the poems will come from: THE NINE PM PROJECT fiddle and concertina duo, Shane Mc Grath, sea shanties, plus NORTHLIGHT, a lyrical indie band with chamber music overtones. Thurs. 6 Sept, 4 p.m., Poetry with Nuala Leonard in the Pop Up Shop at Peoples Park Gates, alongside Art Exhibition by Natalie Connolly. FREE. 3 FRINGE CLOSING EVENT: THE ITHACA SESSION, 6.30 p.m p.m. SUNDAY 9 Sept., Side room, HARBOR BAR AND GRILL, Marine Road, Dun Laoghaire : When you set out for Ithaca, ask that your way be long... New local poets ʻsetting out for Ithacaʼ at this group reading will include Phil Lynch, John Quinn and Michelline Egan. The reading will be M.Cʼd by P.J.Murphy of SWENYʼs CHEMISTS and headlined by poet, Poetry Diva and poetry blogger Kate Dempsey. There are still some spaces for interested readers at the open micʼ on this night. poetryfringeevents@gmail.com. OTHER EVENTS ON THE FRINGE On Wednesday and Thursday 5th and 6th Sept., FRINGE will also co-ordinate a series of events in local community and therapeutic settings. These will be by invitation of the communities involved. Tuesdayʼs community events will take place in the DALKEY COMMUNITY UNIT FOR OLDER PERSONS and the NATIONAL REHABILITATION HOSPITAL. Thursdayʼs event will take place in a Dun Laoghaire residentʼs home. FRINGE aims via these events to take the fun and creative expression of the festival to people who would have difficulty accessing it otherwise. To protect peoplesʼ privacy, these events are not open to the public. Participating poets and musicians in main events: Helena Nolan (reader on POETRY TRAIL, Tues 4th Sept., and at NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM, Weds 5th) Helena Nolan's poems and short stories have appeared in a range of anthologies and journals, in Ireland and the UK. She is last year's winner of the Patrick Kavanagh Award, having come second in She lives in Shankill with her family. Mark Granier (reader at POETRY TRAIL and at NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM) Mark Granier has published two collections with Salmon Poetry, Airborne (2001) and The Sky Road (2007). His awards include the New Writer Poetry Prize in 1997 and the Vincent Buckley Poetry Prize in He also received two Arts Council bursaries, in 2002 and His third collection, Fade Street, was published by Salt in Gerard Fanning (reader at NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM). Gerard works for the Irish Civil Service in Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin. He has published three collections of poetry with the Dedalus Press: Easter Snow(1992), Working for the Government(1999) and Water & Power(2004), and a chapbook, Canower Sound(2003), with the Shinbone Press. He is a recipient of the Rooney Prize.for Irish Literature and of the Brendan Behan Award for poetry. Joseph Woods ( reader at NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM). Joe is a poet and Director of Poetry Ireland since For his first book, he won the Patrick Kavanagh Poetry Award in Dedalus Press gathered his first two collections in one volume entitled Cargo (2010) and in 2011 published his third collection Ocean Letters. He has read widely, reviews occasionally and contributes to radio.

4 Cliona O Connell ( reader at Night at the Museum). Cliona's first collection White Space was published in She is currently studying for a Masters in poetry studies at MDI, DCU. Katie Martin ( reader on Poetry Trail, Tues. 4th). Katie is from Tallaght, Dublin. She has been writing poetry for as long as she can remember. She works as an Arts Administrator. Jane Clarke (reader on Poetry Trail Tues 4th) Originally from a farm in Roscommon, Jane Clarke now lives near Glenmalure, Co. Wicklow. Jane has won a number of prizes including Listowel Writers Week (2007), iyeats (2010) and was runner-up in the Fish Poetry Prize, 2009 & 2012 and the 2012 Mslexia Poetry Prize. Geraldine Mitchell ( reader at FOR A FREE AND JUST WORLD, Friday 7th, 1 p.m. BRIAN S NOLAN UPSTAIRS GALLERY) Geraldine is the overall winner of Poetry Ireland/Trócaire's inaugural poetry competition and is currently their poetry 'ambassador', assisting in the development of the organisations strategic partnership. Dublin-born, Geraldine lived abroad for many years and has now settled in Mayo. Her first collection of poems, World Without Maps, was published by Arlen House in She won the Patrick Kavanagh Award in Shirley McClure ( Reader at National Rehabilitation Hospital event - invitation only). Shirley is a member of performance poetry ensemble, Catch The Moon, and enjoys reading and performing her work. She is married to Philip W.Beck ( and he and their dog, Minnie, feature in some of her poems.since 1992 she has been a natural health practitioner and teacher. She practices shiatsu and aromatherapy (see and works with a number of community and holistic organisations, teaching and facilitating groups. She also teaches creative writing with a particular interest in writing and health. Kate Dempsey (Headline poet at ITHACA SESSION Sunday , HARBOR BAR AND GRILL). KATE DEMPSEY is a writer and a blogger living in Maynooth. She writes fiction and nonfiction as well as poetry and is widely published in Ireland and abroad, in magazines, anthologies and on the radio. She fits this around her family and a full time job, writing on the sofa, on the train and in that little coffeeshop on the corner. Bernie Kenny ( Reader at Dalkey Community Unit for Older Persons - Invitation only). A Dalkey resident, Bernie Kenny has published numerous volumes of poetry, most recently ALWAYS DALKEY, ALWAYS THE SEA. She is a member of the SHED poets group and facilitates writing workshops. Nuala Leonard (reading poetry in the POP UP SHOP in Dun Laoghaire, Fri. 7/ 9 4 p.m). Nuala is a poet and poetry afficionado who travels to festivals with a poetry caravan containing her POETRY SHELF. Nuala will be alongside Natalie Connolly s exhibition of paintings there.

5 Yvonne Cullen ( Tuesday poetry Trail and Kitchen Reading with Nuala Ni Chanainn. Cocurator of POETRY FRINGE). Yvonne Cullen runs Writing Train Writing workshops and writing holidays. Her poems appear in 2004 s New Irish Poets from Bloodaxe Books, among other anthologies. SHOWTOWN, her nonfiction account of a showpeoples caravan park in Dublin will appear in Yvonne is now developing a television documentary on travelling show life and a new collection of poems. Living in Glasthule, she s delighted to have the chance to curate a FRINGE for Poetry Now. Triona McMorrow, co-curator of POETRY FRINGE Triona McMorrow is a Dun Laoghaire poet who likes making things happen. Co-host with Yvonne Cullen of several WRITING SALOON performance nights and also of the 2011 POETRY FRINGE, Triona has been shortlisted for the Ledwidge Poetry prize and recently had work published in the USA. P.J.Murphy lives in Killiney. Having spent many years working in Dun Laoghaire, he is now one of the principle volunteers behind SWENYS THE CHEMIST s, the living museum and reading venue for the works of Joyce. P.J will M.C our ITHACA SESSION for new poets. Musicians Nuala Ni Chanainn Nuala ni Chanainn is a veteran musical and theatrical performer. Nuala will accompany our readers in community settings at NATIONAL REHABILITATION HOSPITAL AND DALKEY COMMUNITY UNIT FOR OLDER PERSONS. In a reprise of very successful performances at CUIRT 2011, Nuala will also accompany Yvonne Cullen in a poetry and music event in a Dun Laoghaire kitchen on Thursday 6th Sept. (This event is by invitation of the home owner only.) Shane Mc Grath: Shane plays with MINNIE AND THE ILLYWHACKERS and also writes and performs his own vintage-inflected songs. Heʼll be delivering us a couple of sea shanties at the NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM event. THE NINE PM PROJECT are Aifric Boylan (fiddle) and Ciaran OʼGrady (concertina). A duo influenced equally by English folk, Irish folk and some kind of magic all their own, they are currently writing their first album. NORTHLIGHT are a duo of indie musicians creating sometimes dark sometimes illuminated and always lyrical songs with a chamber rock aspect.
