Hull WEEK WEEK BEGINNING LORD OF THE FLIES Form: THIRD FORM Term: SUMMER SKILLS 1 16 th April Introduction to Novel: Setting and context William Golding s life and intentions. Introduction to Chapter 1 Complete the introductory activity (Use information at the back of support booklet). Teacher to outline Golding s purpose for writing the text and its parallels with Coral Island. Begin reading Chapter 1, highlighting language used to describe Ralph and Piggy. Explore symbolism: the island, the boys contrasting appearances, the war etc. Develop to include the damage the boys have already done to the natural world and link to Golding s attitude to mankind because of the War. Pupils create a character profile for Piggy and Ralph for Chapter 1, pages Close language analysis and PETAL practice (Resource 2). Speaking and Listening Make different kinds of relevant contributions in groups, responding appropriately to others, proposing ideas and asking questions. Reading and Writing Extract and interpret information, events, main points and ideas from texts. Infer and deduce meanings, recognising the writers intentions Identify and comment on writers' purposes and viewpoints, and the overall effect of the text on the reader Develop and adapt reading skills and strategies

2 Creative writing: Imagine that you are either Ralph or Piggy. Write a letter home to either your father (Ralph) or your auntie (Piggy) to explain what has happened. Use inference and deduction to recognise implicit meanings at sentence and text level 2 23 rd April The Sound of the Shell: Key characters introduced Description of the island Choosing a leader Finish reading Chapter 1. Explore comparisons between Piggy s and Ralph s spoken language. Pupils should collect quotations and compare: register, tone, range of vocabulary etc. They should then consider how others view the way we speak. A good starter activity would be to write the following quotations on the board and ask pupils to correct Piggy s grammar: all them other kids We was attacked When we was coming down I looked It wasn t half dangerous with all them tree trunks falling Can t catch me breath Discussion questions, leading to a written response. What does Piggy's use of language suggest about: His status at home His status on the island His status amongst the other boys? Support your ideas with references to the text and explain your ideas fully. The Island: What are your first impressions of the island? How do the boys react to the

3 island? Find quotes to support your ideas. Pupils should be introduced to the notion of a utopia and a dystopia; they then write down what each place should be like, in their opinion. Could link to modern dystopias in popular fiction: The Hunger Games and Divergent. The conch is the symbol of order and democracy. Ask pupils to analyse the words used to describe it. pupils should consider the following: Who blows it first? How does it make him feel? How does it affect the other boys? The arrival of the choir: read the introduction from Within the diamond haze of the beach ). Analyse closely and ask pupils to complete the following essay-style question using PETAL: What impression does the reader get of Jack from this section of the novel? Speaking and Listening Task: Create a campaign speech from the perspective of either Jack or Ralph. In your speech, you must persuade the other boys that you are the best person to lead on the island. Teacher should revise persuasive features and how to write a speech (AFOREST). Peer Assessment using the GCSE Speaking and Listening criteria.

4 Fire on the Mountain: Symbolism Leadership and division The snake-thing Post-reading recap of Chapter 1: How is Ralph described? How is Jack described? Consider how this can be symbolic. How is Piggy described? How do they contrast? What role does the conch play? How is Simon introduced? Why is Jack reluctant to kill the pig the deeper reason? 3 30 th April *What is the effect of the dash, as used in specific instances in this chapter? (Cite at least one ex.) Analyse the first sentence of the chapter and its implications: By the time Ralph finished blowing the conch the platform was crowded. Explore the title, focus closely on control and destruction, and the vulnerability of the island. But also, the positive outcomes of creating a fire: comfort, cooking, warmth etc. Read the description the description of the beastie the little boy with the birth mark speaks of. Ask pupils to

5 consider other stories with snakes, extend to include the metaphor and link to Golding s intentions. Close language analysis: destructive force of the fire (Resource 3). Finish reading Chapter 2 and ask pupils to discuss the following: Is the island still a utopia? What has happened in this chapter to change your view? Make a list of all the negative phrases used to describe the island. What is happening to the island and the boys? Creative Writing: Write an article for a broadsheet newspaper to describe the boys behaviour on the island. The article should have the headline: Fire burns on abandoned island. Teacher to guide: pupils can take whatever route they wish: disaster, curiosity, abandonment, Hell on Earth etc. 4 7 th May 29 th May 2 nd June HALF - TERM 5 14th May **Optional Trips Abroad Week** 6 21 st May Speaking and Listening Task: In groups, pupils should complete the Desert Island Challenge task (Resource 4, including PowerPoint). There are four tasks which involve creative and critical thinking. Pupils should complete all four, including the written tasks. Huts on the Beach: Simon s character Symbolism The Beast Breaking away from civilised behaviour. Read Chapter 3: focus on Piggy s Explain and comment on writers' use of language, including grammatical and literary

6 character The first thing we ought to have made is shelters down there by the beach. What does this reveal about Piggy? Close language analysis (Resource 5) Read Chapter 4: Painted Faces and Long Hair. How has Roger s character developed? What does he do? What are the possible implications of this? features at word and sentence level What has happened to Ralph and Piggy in this chapter? Close analysis of the relationship between both boys Introduce the idea of a microcosm and ask the pupils to explore the parallels between the boys world and the outside world. Create a mind map to display ideas Pupils should draw a contrast between the description of the island at the beginning of the novel and Chapter 4. They should collect evidence and answer the following question: What effects do Golding s descriptions of the island in the first two chapters of the book have on the reader? Pupils to respond to teacher s feedback and redraft the essay using GCSE marking criteria. 28 th May 31st June HALF - TERM 7 4 th June END-OF-YEAR EXAMS 8 11 th June Beast from Water and Beast from Air: Characterisation and development Metaphor and allegory Outsiders and leaders Pupils list the symbolic events in the Identify and understand the main ideas, viewpoints, themes and purposes in a text Explain and comment on

The most significant being: Jack is proud that he killed a pig and is excited by the amount of blood there was Ralph is bitter and angry that they missed a chance of being rescued. Piggy s glasses are broken by Jack hitting him. Pupils should write a paragraph about each event and explain what it signifies for the future on the island Close analysis of the boys appearances; explore their departure from society and what may have caused this Explore the use of language in the opening of Chapter 5 (Resource 6). Read Chapters 5 and 6. Creative Writing: Piggy s monologue. Pupils should write a short monologue from Piggy s perspective at the end of Chapter 5. Shadows and Tall Trees & A Gift for Darkness The significance of the parachutist Foreshadowing and symbolism Themes and characterisation Read Chapter 7 and 8. Pupils should focus on the symbolic significance of the airman: Why does Golding tell the reader about the airman? Why is it important that we learn about the airman and the boys don t? writers' use of language, including grammatical and literary features at word and sentence level Accurately use subject terminology to support ideas. Identify and evaluate poetic devices and impact on reader. Make relevant comparisons between texts, including contextual elements Accurately use subject terminology to support ideas. Make relevant comparisons between texts, including contextual elements. Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar Use a wide range of vocabulary and punctuation for clarity and effect. Spell with accuracy and confidence.

8 Use Sam n Eric s description of the Beast to answer the following question: What impact does the story of the Beast have on the other boys? Description: It was furry. There was something moving behind its head wings. The beast moved too The was awful. It kind of sat up... There were eyes Teeth Claws Close analysis of language: read the extract from Castle Rock [ Ralph said nothing halfway up the rock ]. Why is the rock referred to as Castle Rock? Consider the following: What do Jack and Ralph s differing views about the rock suggest? What examples of foreshadowing can you see in this extract? Focus on Ralph s character development and plan a response to the following essay question: How and why has the character of Ralph started to change by Chapter 6? Consider: What was Ralph like at the start of the novel? How others reacted to him at the start, and now How you feel about Ralph now as a reader Pupils should write the essay using the GCSE criteria to support. Resource 7 provides a plan for pupils to follow. A View to Death Simon s character th June Savagery and death Golding s message.

9 Close analysis of Simon s description of the wound; draw parallels between Simon and Richard the Lion Heart. Why is this comparison drawn? Jack, Ralph and the other boys have been hunting the boar. Ralph has wounded it with his spear. The boar has apparently wounded Jack as he tried to kill it. Simon says: That s a wound and you ought to suck it. Like Berengaria Jack sucked it. Example response: When the boys get together after the unsuccessful attack on the boar, Jack shows the boys the wound on his arm, Golding describes it as a rip; not much, but bloody. Simon s reaction to this wound is surprising and offers the reader further insight to his mind, he says: That s a wound and you ought to suck it. Like Berengaria At first, this seems like a throwaway comment, but when one considers the symbolism of it, it takes on a whole new meaning. Berengaria was the wife of Richard the Lionheart and when he was struck by a poisoned arrow, she saved his life by sucking the poison out. This suggests to the reader that Simon is thinking that perhaps Jack has become poisoned and needs to have the poison removed. Once again, Simon is directing the reader and suggesting how they should feel about the characters they are reading about. Simon realises that Jack is dangerous. Analyse the boys response to the beast linguistically. What does the reader now know about the boys? Link to writer s

10 intentions and message. Pupils should evaluate the Beast s words to Simon. Link to biblical interpretations. Discussion point: In your own words, explain why this chapter [8] is so important in terms of developing the reader s understanding of the novel as a whole. Read Chapter 9 and 10. Focus on language and how it builds suspense. The Cry of the Hunters The darkness of man s heart explained How far is the suffering over upon rescue? Wider implications of the novel. Read Chapters 11 and 12. Focus on tension and how a sense of terror and fear is created 11 1 st July How much sympathy does the reader feel for Piggy in the end? Why do you think Golding chose to end his life in this way what does the simile reveal? How does his departure contrast with Simon s (island imagery)? Ralph wept for the darkness of man s heart is the defining quotation of the novel. How far do you agree with this statement? Discussion: Does the boys rescue mark the end of their troubles? Why did Golding chose to have the Officer rescue them? Does his naivety symbolise a wider issue with society? Will the boys ever be the same again?
