It takes courage to explore a new frontier, to cast aside the comfort of the life we know to go forth and explore our universe. Our Cub Scouts show similar courage in exploring the options and challenges of their advancement in Scouting, which we know will help them grow up strong and courageous as they lead our complicated world and learn more about our universe. Courage is doing what is right even if your friends will laugh at you or if the popular crowd ridicules you. Courage is keeping your standards high and always holding fast to them. Courage is stepping forward to help when no one else is willing to. Courage is saying no to things that you know are wrong. Courage sometimes takes planning and sometimes is a spur of the moment occurrence. Courage is staying safe and keeping others safe as well. Courage is an attitude, not a feeling. Courage is being brave and doing right regardless of our fears, the difficulties or the consequences. Stand up for people who are less fortunate, apologize for mistakes and wrongdoing, tell the truth despite the consequences, resist peer pressure to do the wrong thing. TRAINING Boy Scouts of America Roundtable Planning Guide Building and Maintaining Pack Spirit. Begin this session by talking to the group in a monotonous tone with little facial expression and enthusiasm. Ask the participants how such an attitude would affect the spirit if the pack. Point out that it is important for them to keep a positive and enthusiastic spirit when working with Scouts or conducting pack meetings. Brainstorm ideas for building pack spirit. Encourage Cubmasters to involve everybody in pack meetings and activities. Remind them that varying activities, yells, and cheers and getting the audience to actively participate will improve the spirit of a pack. Remind them that the use of costumes and props enhances the quality of the program. Healthy competitions between dens can also build a sense of unity within the pack. In addition to the regular recognition of the Scouts accomplishments, don t forget to recognize parents and leaders so that everybody fells a sense of belonging in the pack. Practice the audience participation story Cubs in Shining Armor found in the supplemental pack meeting plan. PACK IDEAS BSA Monthly Pack Meeting Plans: July : Space: The New Frontier This might be a great time to hold a space derby for the pack. Be sure to provide space derby kits a month ahead so Scouts can make their spaceships.

2 GATHERING ACTIVITIES (PRE-OPENERS) Using a pool noodle and golf tees. Cut a pool noodle into sections and set out golf tees. Let the boys use their imaginations to make aliens/robots. OPENING / FLAG CEREMONIES Blast Off Materials needed: Each Cub will hold a card spelling CUB SCOUT eight cards. Each card can be shaped like a rocket ship. Attach the lines to repeat to each card on the back. Cubmaster: We are going to assemble our rocket for a trip into space. We d like you to join us. C C is for courtesy in Cub Scouting and all through life. U U stands for usefulness to our families and others. B B stands for bravery in thoughts and deeds. S S stands for safety in all we do. C C stands for church the one of your choice. O O stands for the outdoors and the beauty of nature. U U is for unity in our den, our pack, our school, our church because in unity we are strong. T T stands for the truth in all things. Cubmaster: Now we are ready for blast off. Please give us a countdown. (Audience counts down: Blast Off! Rockets move off stage. More Cubs enter carrying the USA Flag and the Cubmasters asks the audience to join in the Pledge.) Do Your Best Narrator: This month, we are thinking about the future. What will life be like when our grandsons and great grandsons are Cub Scouts? I believe there will be many incredible changes, but there is one thing that will not change. Our Cubs would like to share it with you this evening. (Each Cub will hold up a letter to spell: DO YOUR BEST. D Doing for others in need O One country, allegiance and creed Y Yes, a response that we give O Oath, that we pledge to live U Under, one flag we all stand R Ready, to defend our great land

3 B Beauty, we see it each day E Eagerness, we all should display S Service, and love toward others T Thankfulness for making us brothers Narrator: Please stand and join us as we salute our flag and say the Pledge of Allegiance.

4 AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION Astronaut Story Divide the audience into five sections. Assign each section one of the parts below. Every time a section hears the narrator say its assigned word, that section stands and shouts its part. ASTRONAUT: Hello from Earth! SPACESHIP: Vroom! SATURN: See my rings! JUPITER: See my moons! MARTIAN: Eeek! Eeek! Once there was a courageous ASTRONAUT who was sent out in his SPACESHIP to explore the galaxy. The first planet the ASTRONAUT landed on was Mars. When the ASTRONAUT landed his SPACESHIP, he saw a MARTIAN. The ASTRONAUT held up two fingers as a sign of peace and said, Greetings from Earth! but all the MARTIAN said was, Eeek! Eeek! After thinking about what the MARTIAN words could mean, the ASTRONAUT decided to return to his SPACESHIP and try another planet. He looked on his solar system map and found JUPITER and SATURN. He said, JUPITER looks about right, and it s a little bigger. The ASTRONAUT started his SPACESHIP and headed for JUPITER. Every so often he wondered what the MARTIAN had said to him. Soon the ASTRONAUT arrived on JUPITER and started searching for signs of life. He searched all over JUPITER, but found nothing. He marveled at the beautiful moons of JUPITER, but climbed aboard his SPACESHIP and headed toward SATURN. Arriving on SATURN, the ASTRONAUT said, This sure is different from Mars and JUPITER! He again searched for signs of life, but found no evidence of life on SATURN. However, floating in the rings of SATURN he found an odd-looking device labeled MARTIAN translator. The ASTRONAUT jumped into his SPACESHIP and headed back to Mars to find the MARTIAN. He landed his SPACESHIP and found the MARTIAN. Holding his MARTIAN translator from SATURN, the ASTRONAUT held up two fingers as a sign of peace, and once again said, Greetings from Earth! Again the MARTIAN said, Eeek! Eeek! Out of the translator was heard, Do Your Best! A SPACE ADVENTURE SPACE: way out there point up moving finger from left to right ASTRONAUTS: onward and upward stand up and thrust arms into the sky. (this is written in a poem form) In the whole universe there s an enormous place, which we all refer to merely as SPACE. ASTRONAUTS spend many hours untold, searching that SPACE where mysteries unfold. They bring back dust and rocks galore. Each ASTRONAUT striving to always learn more. They circle around for days in SPACE keeping up such a strenuous pace. Our country explored SPACE and then very soon our ASTRONAUTS landed upon the far away moon. Oh what a thrill as we witnessed the sight, as ASTYRONAUTS raised our flag on the first moon flight. Right out there through outer SPACE upon the moon stands our flag in place. Just where the ASTRONAUTS left it that day, as a part in history they did play. One fact discovered which story writers weren t pleased, was that the moon is not really made of green cheese. So way out in SP ACE when you see the man in the moon, remember the ASTRONAUTS proved we couldn t eat him at noon! But all of this is old today, ASTRONAUTS often go in SPACE and say, Travel in SPACE here and there, is easily done without a care.

5 CHEERS / RUN-ONS / JOKES Apollo cheer: (Count down 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, blast off! Move one hand up like a rocket, gain orbit, and make a fist and move your head around like a satellite, saying, Beep,beep,beep! ) Space explorer applause: (Point toward the sky and say, You re out of this world! ) Rocket cheer: ZZZZZZZZOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMM! Satellite cheer: Move your hand and arm around your head in a circle, opening and closing the hand while saying, GLEEP, GLEEP, GLEEP! Saturn cheer: Ring! Ring! Ring! That rings true! Venus cheer: Morning star, evening star, you re a star to us! First Spaceman: I m hungry. Second Spaceman: So am I it must be launch time! Blast Off Cheer: start counting backwards from 10-1 bending the knees a little more on each count until you are in a squatting position. Then, while saying Blast Off jump straight up in the air. Fortune Teller Cheer: pretend to gaze into your crystal ball and say I see a bright future for you! Applaud and Cheer: when you raise your right hand everyone is to applaud, when you raise your left hand, everyone is to cheer. When you raise both hands, they do both. If you raise your hands higher, they get louder and as you lower your hands they get softer. Sonic Boom: open mouth and clap hands silently, wait a couple seconds and yell boom. York Adams Council Supersonic: Wave arms wildly and open mouth as if yelling, then wait quietly for a few moments, then yell loudly. Robot: Walk in place, stiff-legged, saying "Does not compute. Does not compute." Jet Breaking Sound Barrier: "Fly your hand like a jet saying "Zoooommmmm" then bring your other hand up and clap once as loud as you can and say "Booommm!" UFO: Have the group look up, shade their eyes with one hand, point with the other and yell, "Look, it's a UFO!!!" Have them turn their heads as if the object is moving. Sky Rocket Cheer: Whistle up the scale and then shout "BOOM! AAAH!" As you whistle, gradually raise your hands and then gradually lower them on AAAH. Gradually soften the AAAH to complete silence. Man In The Moon Applause: Circle face with hands and say "I eat green cheese!" CUB SCOUT 1: What kind of music do astronauts play? CUB SCOUT 2: Nep-tunes! CUB SCOUT 1: What do you call a space wizard? CUB SCOUT 2: A flying sorcerer! Cub 1: How do you get a baby astronaut to sleep? Cub 2: I don t know, how do you get a baby astronaut to sleep? Cub 1: You rock-et! Cub 1: What holds the moon up? Cub 2: I don t know what holds the moon up? Cub 1: Moon beams! Cub 1: Where do astronauts leave their spaceships? Cub 2: I don t know where do astronauts leave their spaceships? Cub 1: At parking meteors!

6 GAMES & ACTIVITIES Flying Saucer Escape Materials: hula-hoop hanging six Frisbees (depending on the size of your group). Divide your group into two teams. Each boy is to have three tries to make the Frisbee pass through the time tunnel (hula hoop). The team to make all of their flying saucers go through the time tunnel is the winner. (someone will have to keep score for each team.) Orbiting the Moon Greater St. Louis Area Council This is a race for the entire family! Each den's families make up a mission to the moon. The moon is a marker about 30' from the starting line. A small Cub Scout is the "nose cone". Two other children are the first and second stage of the rocket. On signal, parents pick up the nose cone and the two rocket stages and begin carrying them toward the moon. Halfway there, on of the stages is put down and joins the run. At the moon, the second stage is put down and also joins the runs. The race ends when all family members are back at the start and the nose cone is set down gently on a chair. Round the Moon Greater St. Louis Area Council All the Dens line up at the end of the room. Each Cub places his hands on the waist of the Cub in front so the Dens for a 'rocket'. A chair is placed at the far end of the room opposite each Den; these are the 'moons'. On 'Go', the Dens run the length of the room, around their 'moon' and back into orbit. As they pass base, the 'rockets' drop a section each time and the Cubs sit down there one by one, until finally the 'nose cone' - the first in line 'returns home. The first team to be sitting down is the winner. Alien Egg York Adams Council Divide the boys into pairs. Tell them that you have been given an alien egg (a ball about volleyball size wrapped in aluminum foil). The egg cannot be moved from place to place unless it is carried between the heads of two people. The egg is unique in this way because it must be in contact with human brain waves while it is in motion or the baby alien inside might get upset, break open the egg, and eat the floor. The object is for each pair to crawl sideways to the end of the playing area and back. They must then exchange the egg with the next pair in line without using their hands. Moon Race Walk York Adams Council Materials: Really, really, really big gum boots or galoshes. Divide the boys into two teams. Have them take off their shoes and stand in two lines. Place the huge boots at the starting line and have the boys put on the "moon boots" race down to a turnaround point and return to give the boots to the next in line. Continue until all boys have finished.

7 ADVANCEMENT & RECOGNITION CEREMONIES Flight Through Space Prepare a ceremony poster board resembling a chart of the sun and planets with the Boy Scout symbol on the sun and Cub Scout ranks on the planets. For other recognitions, such as Cub Scout Sports and Academics belt loops and pins, use shooting stars. Use a small silver cardboard rocket for each Scout receiving a rank advancement. Hang each badge or pin below the rocket with tape. Call each Cub Scout to the front with his parents to receive his recognition. CUBMASTER: We are proud of the courage you have shown in taking another flight forward in the Cub Scout galaxy. (Present the award to his parents to give to the Scout and move his rocket to the appropriate rank or award.) Your parents present this recognition to you because they have acted as launch control for your flight of achievement. Mission Control You will need Frisbees depending on the amount of awards and your awards to hand out to the boys. CUBMASTER: Outer Space calling Mission Control, Outer Space calling Mission Control: COMMITTEE CHAIR: Go ahead Outer Space. CUBMASTER: This is the Rocket Ship Wolf calling. We re getting ready to land. Are you ready to receive our astronauts? COMMITTEE CHAIR: You are cleared to land Wolf Ship. (someone from the back of the room throws a Frisbee with the awards attached to the Cubmaster) Would astronauts and and their parents please come forward. Tonight our Cubs are being honored by receiving the Wolf badge the symbol of your first complete trip into Cub Scout Outer Space. We recognize your achievements and wish you continued success in your Scout exploration. (Hand out the awards) CUBMASTER: Outer Space calling Mission Control, Outer Space calling Mission Control. COMMITTEE CHAIR: Go ahead, Outer Space. CUBMASTER: This is the command ship Bear calling. We are set to land. COMMITTEE CHAIR: Come in Bear ship. (another Frisbee is thrown with awards attached) COMMITTEE CHAIR: Would Bear astronauts and and their parents please come forward. You have completed many missions in the last two years. For your work and accomplishments we are awarding you the Bear badge of rank tonight. Congratulations and may your success continue next year. (hand out awards) CUBMASTER: Outer Space calling Mission Control, Outer Space calling Mission Control. COMMITTEE CHAIR: Come in, Outer Space. CUBMASTER: This is the space shuttle Webelos calling. We are ready to land. Are we cleared? COMMITTEE CHAIR: Everything is A OK. Proceed to land. (Frisbee is thrown with awards) COMMITTEE CHAIR: Would Webelos Astronaut and his parents please come forward. you have achieved the third award in Cub Scouting tonight by completing the Webelos exploration. The flight has been difficult at times but you have succeeded with honor. We salute you. (present award) CUBMASTER: Outer Space calling Mission Control, Outer Space calling Mission Control. COMMITTEE CHAIR: Go ahead Outer Space. CUBMASTER: This is the moon voyager Arrow of Light calling for landing clearance. Please signal when ready! COMMITTEE CHAIR: You may land Arrow of Light. A welcome is being prepared for your pilots. (Frisbee is thrown with awards) COMMITTEE CHAIR: Would astronauts and and their parents please come forward. These astronauts join a select community of Cub Scouts who have accomplished the most difficult tasks placed before them and are now eligible to wear the badge of the Arrow of Light.

8 This honor may be carried forth with them when they continue in the scouting program. You join other Scouts who also wear this emblem of skill and achievement. We look up to you as examples of how young men of today radiate the promise for tomorrow. (present awards) Perhaps some of you Cub Scouts will actually be astronauts in rocket ships and space shuttles. All of you are the explorers of our future. The drive and dedication to doing your best in this program today promises hope and success in whatever you choose for tomorrow. I salute you all. (salute). CUBMASTER S MINUTE History changed on October 4, 1957, when the Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik I. The world s first artificial satellite was about the size of a beach ball. That launch opened the door to new political, military, technological, and scientific developments. For thousands of years, humans had dreamed and imagined what the universe might be like beyond our planet Earth. Today, we know more than ever before, through the courage of those who dreamed about space. With courage and support from your family, you boys can make your dreams come true as well in this new frontier. Good night dream well, Scouts! Baden-Powell had a vision which he made come true. So that we enjoy Scouting and have fun while we do He wasn t an American but he s famous to us He has earned in America our admiration and trust. May the Spirit of Scouting be with both young and old. As we never forget the Blue and the Gold May you strive for Truth and Spirituality In the warm sunlight from the sky above May you bring Good Cheer and happiness to others And have steadfast Loyalty and Love. Aim For The Stars York Adams Council The words "Aim for the Stars" have important meaning to Cub Scouts. There have been many before us who have set their sites and lived their lives by Aiming for the Stars. And while they may not have made it on the first try, or the second, or even the third, they eventually do make it. A Cub Scout who does his best like our motto says, is bettering himself. Sure, sometimes he may not "hit the stars," but he grows from his trying. He is preparing himself for greater attempts and for great successes. Remember, not everyone makes their goals every time, but we all make the world a better place by doing our best and Aiming for the Stars. And isn't that what our real goal is in life?

9 CLOSING / FLAG CEREMONIES A Prayer From Space Have the pack form a large brotherhood circle (arms over each other s shoulders) and then read this prayer that was broadcast from outer space by astronaut Frank Borman from the Apollo spacecraft in March of 1968: Give us, O God, the vision which can see Thy love in the world in spite of human failure. Give us the faith to trust Thy goodness in spite of our ignorance and weakness. Give us the knowledge that we may continue to pray with understanding hearts and show us what each of us can do to set forward the coming of universal peace At this time, you can ask for a moment of reverence (silence) then dismiss the pack til next month. Do More We have dreamed of and spoken of the future tonight. We always think of the wonders of technology and all the changes that will take place. But, in the future one thing will remain the same the human spirit. Tonight, let us pledge to be the best we can as we listen to these thoughtful words. Do more than belong Participate. Do more than care Help. Do more than believe Practice. Do more than be fair Be kind. Do more than forgive Forget Do more than dream Work. Do more than teach Inspire. Do more than live Grow. Do more than be friendly Be a friend. Do more than give Serve. Here s to a wonderful future. Good night Cub Scouts and Families.
