9 Sky River of the Himalayas EP I: From the Source to the Gorge EP II: From the Forest to the Plains EP III: From the Plains to the Ocean UNIVERSUM It begins as the world s highest major river. It thunders through the planet s biggest gorge and lows past Asia s hotspots of biodiversity, teeming with wildlife. United with the Ganges, it forms the world s greatest river delta. As it passes through each of the Earth s climate zones the Sky River becomes a motor for the monsoon that determines a third of the world s weather, dominating the lives of more than a billion people. This groundbreaking documentary explores the entire length of the river whose Hindu name - Brahmaputra - means Son of Creation. Episode One takes us from the glaciers, between 8,000-metre peaks, across Tibet s high, dry and harsh semi-desert, where Chiru antelope race across the plateau at 100kph in the thin air, warmed by the inest of coats that make theirs the world s most valuable leece. Then we descend 3,000 meters through the world s deepest, longest (240km) and still barely explored Tsangpo Gorge. Episode Two continues through the Gorge with its red pandas and isolated human settlements, emerging into India s temperate forests where Gee s golden langurs and macaques roam, and clouded leopards hunt. The river skirts round the Himalayas into Assam s luxuriant green monsoonand tea country, with its iconic wildlife: one-horned rhinos, elephants, black-tailed pythons and the last wild pygmy hogs. Episode Three enters the low-lying, steamy plains of Bangladesh, ending in the Sundarbans with their swamps and coastal mangrove jungles, where the great river meets the ocean. The silt the Sky River carries down from the Himalayas causes constant shifts in its bed, carving out the world s most fertile and most populous region, ravaged by deadly loods and typhoons and patrolled by man-eating tigers, crocodiles and water-monitors. When these waters emerge in the Bay of Bengal, they evaporate in the ierce sunlight, only to return as clouds to the Himalayas, falling as snow once more on the glaciers of the Roof of the World. 13 UNIVERSUM Picture: ORF Universum / epo-film, Carlos R. Villafa Untamed Albania Far away, in south east Europe, a country dominated by high peaks and crystal-clear waters is home to a vast range of wild animals: Albania. Lake Ohrid, Europe s oldest lake, in the east, supports hundreds of endemic animals. It has outlived earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and even Ice Ages. The Balkans largest lake, Lake Scutari, once part of the Adriatic Sea, is a vast bird reserve protecting Dalmatian pelicans, the rarest on the planet. Just 7 meters deep, Lake Scutari hosts a variety of small animals in its marshlands to feed herons, ibis and lamingoes. In the springtime, it is covered by millions of water lilies, perfect shelter for snakes and other predators. The rare greater spotted eagle doesn t just swoop on its prey from the skies, but it also stalks it on the ground! This region hides big predators: brown bears, lynx and jackals, in an intact habitat barely ever disturbed by humanity. This truly is a hidden Eden! 14 UNIVERSUM Picture: ORF Universum / wega Film Wild Boar The Comeback This is the surprising story of the most underrated animal in our forests and its remarkable comeback. Hunted, slaughtered and exterminated that was the European wild boar s fate throughout the last century. But now it s back! Its weapons: wiliness, intelligence, and the ability to cope with society s encroachments. Just 20 years ago an encounter with a wild boar in central Europe was a rarity. But now in some countries the stocks of wild boar have become a plague. 15 UNIVERSUM Picture: ORF Universum / PKM Film, Marion Kreuzer Kestrels at Close Quarters The drama of life is unpredictable. This is as true for humans as for wild animals. Kestrels have learned to live close to man. They even raise their hatchlings in our towns. This is the story of two kestrel couples bringing up their chicks in the same neighbourhood in the center of Vienna. While destiny crowns one breeding pair with success, the other kestrels face a more brutal fate: they have chosen an unsuitable place to brood and raise their hatchlings. With a close look and unlinching passion this ilm reveals the family lives of Kestrels, their needs and eforts when breeding, but also the life which follows a successful brood. Once the ledglings learn to ly, both parents and ofspring face a vital decision: to stay in Europe over the winter or head of to southern climes with abundant prey? Whatever they decide, another unpredictable drama of life beckons. 17 Wild Caribbean Rhythms of Life Part I: Hunters of the Caribbean Part II: Whales and Volcanoes Part III: Corals and Clouds UNIVERSUM Hunters of the Caribbean: Spectacular action in Paradise. From the opening sequence of a sea turtle snared by a tiger shark it s clear no animal, Hunter or Hunted, above or below the water - can make it through life without a strategy for survival. Whales and Volcanoes: when volcanoes burst from the ocean, they attract unique life forms to their jungle valleys and black sandy beaches - and create deep sea chasms that pods of sperm whales enjoy so much, they never leave. Corals and Clouds: These Caribbean coasts and islands, made out of once-living creatures, are now a labyrinth of life. Every year in a stunning synchronised display of coral spawning, the lower animals re-colonise the reefs. Inland, Caribbean cloud forests with their Quetzals are just as magical, but their sufocating run-of of sediment from logging is the corals biggest challenge. Only a few peak near the surface, or reach still higher to build nine green gems: the islands of the Azores. These volcanic rocks, the only toehold between Europe and America, are of extra- ordinary beauty. The steep shelf of the Azores is a play- and mating ground for several kinds of whale. Here groups of male sperm whales on their never-ending migration from the Arctic to the Antarctic, meet females. Humpback whales and gray whales break the surface and blue whales come here too, to feed from the vast biomass produced in the ocean s depths. Drifting up from the deep, plankton and krill attract huge schools of ish and squid. Portuguese Men o War drift threateningly on the surface, while undersea caves host cannibalistic shrimps, manta rays and moray eels. Far inland, in ghost towns long since abandoned by the diamond industry, snakes, chameleons and dew-drinking beetles compete for food among the drifting sands. Take the lonesome wolf that roamed up from the Appenines in search of a mate and inds her here. Trudging through the snow to join his family for the Christmas Eve service in the valley below, tenyear-old Peter comes face to face with a young fawn in the twilight, and wonders what it could tell about growing up in the forest, with the other animals, through the seasons. 35 Wilderness on the Water Lake Constance UNIVERSUM No other European destination has as many incoming and out-going lights as Lake Constance: it s the main hub for migratory birds in Western Europe. Over 300 diferent species pass through every year: that s more than a quarter of a million birds. Lake Constance is so large that, standing on one shore, the Earth s curvature prevents you seeing the opposite bank. Only at full moon do they walk. Then the herd moves together, silently, gracefully. Like ghosts their horned heads peek above the limestone ridges of the Hochschwab mountains. This massive range absorbs snowmelt and rainfall like a gigantic sponge, supplying a million people in distant Vienna with crystal-clear water. Entering the archaic, mystic world of the ibex was Bernhard Schatz s dream. In this unique ilm Bernhard follows the Alpine ibex through a whole year; we experience the amazing, sometimes comical, social behavior of these magical animals, ilmed in the heaviest snowstorms and in the cracking summer heat. And predators there are, though the short-toed eagles are paying more attention to the rodents gambolling on the burning rocks, while grifon vultures bide their time in the updraughts, waiting for the spoils. This is a theatre of life in layers. Layered in time too. When darkness comes wild boar snule through the forest past a deserted village. Autumn is hog heaven here, the time of the trules. But hogs avoid the village, because here there be wolves, among the roots in the abandoned cellars, gliding past the trunks rearing from windows. The whole wolf pack lives here. In summary, conspirators who are in control of all the centers of power, such as politics and the media, are pulling the strings behind the scenes. He then published a poem giving away nine clues as to where it was hidden. If interpreted correctly, the poem leads you to the treasure. He gave ive additional clues in various interviews. Noone has found it yet. Or noone could prove having found it. And so it lies somewhere out there, and who else but two austrian children should ind it? Welcome to the Treasure Hunt!
