To honor his memory, uss (class of 57 and a former member of the ugustana oard of Trustees) and arol (class of 61) established the Thomas ussell reenfield Memorial cholarship at ugustana, an endowed

2 uss and arol reenfield honored the memory of their son with an endowed scholarship. The power of iving ack Twenty-five years ago, uss and arol reenfield s lives changed forever after their son, Tom, a pre-med student at the University of Virginia at harlottesville, was killed. To honor his memory, uss (class of 57 and a former member of the ugustana oard of Trustees) and arol (class of 61) established the Thomas ussell reenfield Memorial cholarship at ugustana, an endowed scholarship designed to provide financial support to undergraduate students majoring in the natural sciences who plan to pursue careers or advanced degrees in medicine. ast fall at ugustana s scholarship recognition program and dinner, the reenfields had a chance to meet biology major Wadie Mahauad-Fernandez 12, the Thomas ussell reenfield Memorial cholarship recipient. This is a great gift it helps me so much, Mahauad-Fernandez said. Following graduation, the Ecuador native began his h.d. studies at the University of Iowa. He hopes to one day work in microbiology research. For the reenfields, meeting Mahauad-Fernandez and learning about his goals to work in medical research was a special opportunity. We wanted this scholarship to go to biology majors because our son was pre-med, arol said. It s a way of keeping his spirit alive. Mahauad-Fernandez is one of many ugustana students who are recipients of the ollege s more than 500 endowed and annual scholarships, financial gifts awarded to students based on, primarily, academic merit and financial need. The annual scholarship program is chance for donors and the students and families their gifts impact, to meet and get to know one another. For many of our donors, giving a scholarship gift to an ugustana student is a way of paying it forward a way to return the thoughtfulness and generosity they received through endowed and annual scholarships during their time as students. For the students who receive these scholarships, the cholarship ecognition rogram gives them an opportunity to offer their thanks and appreciation for the generosity bestowed upon them, said resident ob Oliver. Our students often tell us how much it helps to know that people are cheering them on as they push through tough courses in pursuit of their degree. To our donors who invest their personal spirit and financial resources in our students, we offer our deepest and most sincere gratitude. 3

The growing number of international students who choose to study at ugustana and the increasing involvement of our North merican students in study abroad experiences also provide us with great opportunities to think about how we integrate global perspectives throughout the whole curriculum. In addition, a growing and dynamic local community is providing more and more opportunities for internships and other community-based learning that we are exploring and developing. The economy has made students and parents increasingly concerned about loan indebtedness and understandably so. The federal financial aid formula has many shaking their heads, including our financial aid administrators. nyone who believes that colleges are increasing costs to capitalize on federal aid dollars is incorrect. Federal aid is not keeping pace with increasing tuition, making it very difficult to meet the demonstrated financial need of families. ome colleges are taking bold steps by freezing tuition and, in extreme cases, lowering it. The challenge for the ollege is to maintain and enhance academic quality with reduced net tuition revenue. Demographics are not in ugustana s favor. Fewer high school graduates reside within a 150 mile radius. Many colleges have turned to international students as a way to boost enrollment and increase diversity. ugustana, too, has increased its investment in international recruiting and so far the returns have been significant with students from 42 countries enrolled this fall. The announcement of the anford hallenge ift comes at a critical point in our history. With approximately 40 percent of our students choosing majors within the natural sciences division, it is essential that we provide our students and professors with the excellent facilities that they expect and deserve. Eleven percent is gift and endowment income raised from alumni, friends, the church and other organizations that value the ollege s academic mission and is used to provide scholarships to students, supplement salaries and for other academic and student life experiences. The remaining 9 percent of revenue is from grants and other revenue. ugustana is a people enterprise and personnel costs account for 66 percent of our expenses while direct auxiliary expenses account for another 15 percent. The remaining costs consist of academic programming, student activities, extra-curricular activities, utilities, insurance and other expenses. Our endowment performance for the fiscal year (12 months ending July 31, 2012) was down approximately one percent. The investment markets and portfolio value for the fiscal year saw the first half turn downward and recover over the last six months. For the last 12 months, domestic equities performed the best, while international equities and commodities showed negative returns. In addition to gifts that help fund our annual operation, the ollege also received support to build and maintain our facilities which enabled us to purchase specialized equipment that serves our campus community. pecifically: We completed room renovations in ergsaker Hall and installed new fire suppression and alarm systems. Our tavig Hall update is similar to the ranskou renovation from 2011, wherein we removed the original built-in desks and closets, painted, carpeted and installed new modular furniture (desk, dresser, wardrobe closets and bed frames) in every room with new paint and carpet in the hallways. The ommons Drive was widened and the Humanities lot was repaved. We also repaired a significant number of our footpaths located near ergsaker and olberg. t the newly-named Karras ark, home of the onken aseball Field, we installed lights, a new FieldTurf infield, and built new dugouts. new grandstand and pressbox are near completion. In the Madsen enter, we remodeled some laboratories and conference rooms to enhance flexibility and functionality. We re-carpeted Kresge ecital Hall and restored and repaired pianos in the Humanities uilding. We refurbished the swimming pool in the Elmen enter. In the ilbert cience enter, we completed some work in the Nursing offices and added new carpet in various study areas. The endulum ounge area also received new carpet and ceiling tiles. The lower roofs of Tuve Hall were replaced. Inside Edith Mortenson enter, we performed routine maintenance and installed carpet in the first floor hallways. We installed new sidewalks and historical markers at Heritage ark. We also installed new lighting fixtures throughout the northeast part of campus. roviding a rich academic and student life experience that prepares students for lives of leadership and service, managing our revenue and expense budgets, addressing deferred maintenance and growing our endowment through wise investments are our priorities. In December, ugustana announced that alumni Jim and Myrna Wylie made a gift of more than $570,000 to the ollege, a portion of which will be used to support the new science center project. ugustana officials have been working to raise funds for the new facility, to be named in honor of longtime ugustana biology professor Dr. ven Froiland, following a $20 million challenge gift from anford Health earlier this fall. He later served at parishes in lbert ea, Minn., hicago and New York before joining the management team of utheran eneral Hospital (now known as dvocate Healthcare), the largest healthcare system in metro hicago. Myrna, class of 1957, majored in nursing and spent her career working primarily as an operating room nurse. They are both now retired and live near hicago. They have three children and five grandchildren. They were inspired to make the gift, they said, because the ollege still holds a special place in their hearts. ugie is where we got our start, Jim said. It s where we wanted to make our commitment. It s an amazing sense that comes over you when you have the opportunity to give back to the source of your own educational beginnings. It s where we got our preparation for life. The couple donated family farmland in lay ounty,.d., to the ollege. portion of the proceeds from the sale of the land, which recently sold at auction, will be used for the science project while another portion will be used to fund a gift annuity, which will ultimately fund the science project when the annuity matures. It reflects gifts given to a variety of important initiatives that sustains our campus; supports our students through scholarships; enables professors to deliver an exceptional academic experience; provides the resources for a vibrant co-curricular program and strengthens the ollege s long-term future through endowment. Every gift is valued and participation at every level is appreciated. Whether large or small, each gift joins with the gifts of others. It is the aggregate of all gifts that has the greatest impact. When foundations and corporations consider grant applications, they frequently ask us about the percentage of participation in giving from ugustana alumni, parents, and friends. It strengthens our case when those closest to the ollege support it. We also know that alumni support our annual giving opportunities because they continue to value their education. It s a chance to cast a vote of confidence in their ugustana experience. The ugustana Fund is the heart of our annual giving program. ifts given are applied to student scholarships, the support of our academic program and to ongoing operations of the ollege. Friends of the erforming and Visual rts support ugustana s performing artists, including the cost of touring, instruments, supplies and equipment. ugustana s music performances, theatre productions and gallery exhibitions have always been a source of pride for the ollege and continue to be central to the experience of a quality liberal arts education. Membership in the ibrary ssociates supports the expansion of library holdings and services, supports scholarly activities and enables the ollege to maintain its excellent academic program through providing the resources every student needs. The Mikkelsen ibrary is recognized as the best academic resource in the community of ioux Falls. The enter for Western tudies, annual hosts to the nationally recognized oe Forum on ublic ffairs, preserves and interprets the history and cultures of the Northern lains. The ugustana thletic lub supports Viking athletics through scholarship support and operational expenses. More than 800 individual members and 52 corporate sponsors support nearly 375 students who wear the navy and gold. National recognition for academic and athletic success has brought honor to the ollege s goal to achieve success in classrooms and labs and on the field of competition. t ugustana, we are blessed by the many alumni and friends who offer their support and gifts year after year.
