1 Web Quest World War I Overview: There is so much information about World War I that it would be impossible to cover it all in class. For this webquest, you will be exploring different facets of the conflict that range from the extensive use of horses to Congressional Medal of Honor recipients. For each topic, there are photos and video clips to help you really explore each topic. You can choose which tabs you explore and in which order. We will have almost two full days in class to explore, so look through as many of the topics as you can. Part I: Home Page Directions: Please start by watching the video on the main page that covers 10 remarkable facts about World War I. While watching or when you are done, write down two facts that you considered to be the most interesting Part II: Horses of War Directions: Start by reading the brief overview on this section page. Then click the red button to read a history channel article about other animals used during the war. Animal Horses How they were used (bullet point 2 each) Sgt. Stubby (Dog) Camels Glow worms Pigeons Elephants Dolphins and Sea Lions
2 Read about horses back on the main webquest site and complete the following: 1. True or False: There were more supply mules than supply horses. 2. There were more cavalry horses than gun horses. 3. Why was losing a horse worse than losing a man? 4. Each 1000 man infantry battalion had a transport section of men and in the muddy conditions it could take hours to clean the horses and their equipment. 5. True or False: The British Army lost 15% of its horses every year. 6. What was the biggest killer of horses? 7. Make sure you watch the video at the bottom of the page. Part III: Truth of the Trenches Directions: Read the overview on the main page and then start by reading the translated letter from the trenches on the main page. After you watch the video on the bottom, please click the red button to read information about some of the Letter from the Trenches: 1. List three items the parents sent Ernst in a care package: 2. 3 Part IV: Soldier s Stories Directions: Read through the primary documents and diary entries that describe what fighting in World War I was like. For each type of situation an experience, write a short description in the box below. When you are done, watch the two video clips at the bottom. Then read the description of Alvin York, a famous Medal of Honor winner, and answer the questions below. It began in the war and is the military decoration presented by the United States government to a member of its armed forces.
