1 UNIVERSITY OF ZAGREB SCHOOL OF MEDICINE Plan of the course Social Medicine and Introduction to Medicine Academic year 2015/2016
2 I. COURSE AIMS The aim of the course is to provide students with a basic knowledge and understanding of social aspects of health and disease. The students learn about interdependent relations between health status and social, ecological, and heritable factors. The students learn about the range of health care measures: basic methods of health promotion and prevention, prevention and treatment of diseases, and rehabilitation. They learn how to recognize and solve major health problems in a community and in population groups. They also adopt basic principals of health care organization, and learn on elements/participants and institutions of a health care system. The topics covered by the course are: development of social medicine; definitions of health and disease; interrelations between health and social problems on a national and a global level; demographical indicators (vital statistics), population policy, and family planning; primary and secondary social groups and their impact on health and disease; specifics of lifecycle phases, with an emphasis on problems of the youth; socio-medical problems; health behavior and health education; the health care system: the range of its measures, institutions and workers, team work, private and public practice. INTRODUCTION TO MEDICINE The course provides the students with basic medical terms and definitions. The students learn about the origins and the development of medicine, and its achievements over history. They also study the learning methods in medicine, phases of studying, and express their expectations and challenges regarding the medical studies. They learn about the development of modern medical science and principles of medical profession, as well as about the possibilities and needs for employment (range of posts), postgraduate education, specialization and promotion. The course encompasses these topics: definitions of medicine and related terms (illness, sickness, impairment, disability, handicap, etc); insight into the past of medicine: natural, humanistic/social, and organizational science bases of medicine; learning methods in medicine, types of medical schools; the principles and the criteria of the medical profession, duties of medical professionals, physician s position in society, the range of medical specialization and other ways of continuing education; basic principles of medical ethics and human rights.
