2 Tri-Polar Liner Tri-Polar Shell BRIDGING THE GAP ALONG THE CON The technological evolution of total hip arthroplasty (THA) has been largely focused on improvements to implant designs and biomaterials. Yet, even in this era of unprecedented industry commitments to research and development, far less attention has been devoted to what may be the most common complication in THA: Joint Instability. Patients presenting with a moderate to high risk of dislocation are often not ideal candidates for a constrained liner based on activity level and lifestyle. And managing these patients has traditionally required careful balancing of range of motion and joint stability. With precious few options available, surgeons routinely must choose between all or nothing: either a fully constrained device, or a slightly modified standard liner. The Biomet Tri-Polar liner system was designed in conjunction with Michael Welch M.D., Wellington Orthopedics, Cincinnati, Ohio. This brochure is presented to demonstrate the technique utilized by Dr. Welch. Biomet, as the manufacturer of this device, does not practice medicine and does not recommend this or any other surgical technique for use on a specific patient. The surgeon who performs any procedure is responsible for determining and utilizing the appropriate techniques for such procedure for each individual patient. By bridging the gap along the continuum of constraint and conserving a high range of motion (up to 142 ), the Tri-Polar Liner offers an extremely strong construct that actively resists dislocation. THE TRI-POLAR IS DESIGNED TO: Preserve Joint Performance ROM (see Range of Motion chart). 142 Increase Intraoperative Versatility Standard, +5mm, Hi-Wall and All-Poly designs. Reduce Dislocations Resistance to dislocation (hop height) 7 13mm greater than standard liners.

4 Figure 2a Figure 3 Figure 1 Figure 2 SURGICAL TECHNIQUE Trial Reduction and Select Components (Figure 1) Place the appropriate Tri-Polar liner provisional into the RingLoc 1Perform shell and the Tri-Polar shell provisional head trial onto the femoral stem. Reduce and check for stability. (Keep in mind that the +5mm and Hi-Wall liners may be used to address instability.) 2Place Liner and Head Components (Figure 2) Place the selected Tri-Polar liner into the RingLoc shell with the liner impactor. Place the 22mm or 28mm head onto the femoral stem trunion. 3 Place Tri-Polar Shell and Reduce First, snap the Tri-Polar shell into place on the selected head (Figure 2a). Then, place the Tri-Polar shell into the Tri-Polar liner and perform a final check of ROM (Figure 3).
