Ultrasound Redefined Ultrasonic Transducers
Introduction Ultran is a team of engineers, scientists, and skilled technicians that works closely with our clients. Together we are dedicated to providing the highest quality products and solutions. Ultran accomplishes this by focusing on the heart of ultrasound: the transducer. Long ago we realized that for ultrasound to rival other wave-based methods, we had to first develop the field. These goals are possible only through transducers with the right acoustics that perform under given conditions of testing. Forty years of non-stop R&D in transducers and applications allows us to share Ultran s milestones with you. Key Developments 1977 Unipolar λ-series transducers for extremely high resolution and spectroscopy Dual damping mechanism for high signal-to-noise ratios Optimum development of broad-band (W-series), medium band, and narrow-band (kseries) transducers from 500 khz to 25 MHz (currently offered up to 10 MHz) Very High Frequency transducers from 30 MHz to 200 MHz (currently discontinued) shear wave propagation transducers from 200 khz to 20 MHz Dry Coupling longitudinal and shear wave transducers from 200 khz to 25 MHz. Introduction of air/gas propagation transducers from 50 khz to 5 MHz High Temperature transducers from 200 khz to 5 MHz for operation >800 C Introduction of Wideband Ultrasonic Spectroscopy High Numerical Aperture transducers up to 150 MHz (currently discontinued) High Power transducers for biomedical therapy and industrial applications from 50 khz and above Very Low Frequency transducers from 30 khz and up High Efficiency Air/Gas Transduction transducers from 30 khz to 10 MHz for practical non-contact ultrasound Gas Matrix Piezoelectric composite transducers for high sensitivity and bandwidth, from 30 khz to 500 khz Array transducer development for high volume production line inspection applications Optimization of medical therapy transducers for low intensity focused ultrasound (LIFU) Development of 2D phased array integrated systems for wearable medicine and NDT structural health monitoring. 4 Transducer Construction Craftsmanship Ultran has strict in-house quality control standards which result in high performance transducers for non-destructive testing and medical therapy applications. Each transducer features careful alignment of acoustic and geometric axes and is encased in its own optimally shaped and sized housing with specially designed acoustically passive materials. Combined with our unique transducer-making technology, these features produce an optimum response from all our acoustic series. Transducer Housing Pulse Control/ Damping Material Encapsulation Noise Control Material Piezoelectric Material Coaxial Connector Electrical Connection Bond Layers Protective/ Impedance Matched Face Elements of a Piezoelectric Transducer A transducer can be as simple as a piezoelectric disc with leads attached to both faces. Or, it can be a complex device intended to evaluate a number of materials and interfaces. In conjunction with the testing environment and a material s physical condition, a transducer device must be characterized by proper acoustics and mechanical construction. Therefore, the design of a modern transducer requires a knowledge of materials and the associated physics. Ultran s years of experience have led to the evolution of an array of transducer designs suitable for a vast number of materials and test conditions. Ultran s transducer designs are protected by international patents 4
Transducer Characterization Acoustic Parameters of a Transducer Our transducers are measured and characterized by a number of key parameters which are listed in the table below. Nominal Frequency Peak Frequency Bandwidth Center Frequency (BCF) Bandwidth (BW) This is the target nominal frequency of the transducer as identified by the model number. This is the highest frequency response measured from the frequency spectrum. This is the average of the lowest and highest points at a -6dB level of the frequency spectrum. This is the difference between the highest and lowest frequencies at a -6dB level of the frequency spectrum, also identified as the % of BCF or of PF. Test Setup for Data A report The schematic (bottom left) depicts the water immersion example for characterization of an acoustic transducer. A transducer is characterized by using hard, soft, or gaseous reference media depending upon its design and intended application. The oscilloscope trace (top left) includes the time domain response (top - blue) and frequency spectrum (below red). 5
Transducer Characterization Spatial and Acoustic Pressure/Intensity Measurements for Select Transducers For specialized transducers or upon customer request, Ultran may perform spatial beam profile measurements using Ultran s U710x Ultrasonic Analysis System. Measurements are performed using an immersible calibrated hydrophone for immersion transducers. Sample Data for Focused Immersion Transducer The profile images to the right were captured for a focused immersion transducer to measure the focal parameters of this unit. The image to the right is a graphical representation of the X- Y beam profile while the image to the bottom represents the X-Z beam profile measuring the focal depth. Numerical data is converted to acoustic pressure or intensity using a calibrated system. 6
Transducer Selection Transducer Model Types Depending upon the desired application, a certain transducer model may be more appropriate. The below table summarizes the general use for each main model currently produced by Ultran. Acoustic Series Frequency Range General Applications Page NC Series (Non-Contact) 30 khz to 5 MHz Measurements in air or other gaseous mediums. Commonly used for production and high volume manufacturing quality control of various materials, including composites, ceramics, polymers, and more. 8 G Series (Low Frequency Contact and Immersion) 30 khz to 500 khz Contact and Immersion for inspection of high attenuation materials, such as composites, ceramics, concrete, and more. Power and energy delivery applications, such as medical therapy for neuromodulation or low intensity focused ultrasound (LIFU). 17 W Series (High Bandwidth Conventional) 500 khz to 10 MHz High resolution imaging and defect detection for a large variety of materials. 22 K Series (High Sensitivity Conventional) 500 khz to 10 MHz High sensitivity transducers for attenuative and deep material penetration. 26 S Series (Shearwave) 500 khz to 10 MHz Shear vibration transducers for vibration in horizontal plane (perpendicular to direction of travel). 30 Transducer Customizations Certain customizations may be requested including connector type, housing material, dimensions, and use characteristics. Ultran will consider non-standard requests on a caseby-case basis. Connector Types The standard provided connector may be replaced with an alternative type (i.e. BNC replaced with SMB). Please inform us if a different connector is preferred and we will do our best to accommodate. Transducer Housing and Construction Materials In some cases, a desired housing material may be used in place of the standard offering, such as stainless steel replaced with PEEK for immersion transducers. Other specialty design considerations may be incorporated, such as construction with materials intended for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) compatibility. Accessories To accompany our transducer products, Ultran offers a variety of accessories for use with ours or 3rd-party instrumentation and for increased performance. Matching Inductance Networks (MID) External device for electrical matching between transducers and common 3rd party electronics to further improve performance. Generally intended for use with non-contact receiving or pulse-echo transducers and offered at all standard NCU frequencies from 30 khz to 5 MHz. Polystyrene Delay Tips Delay lines for use with WRD, KRD, and SRD transducers. Provided at diameters corresponding to standard transducer sizes and at various lengths. Custom lengths also available upon request. Cables Cables can be produced at a variety of sizes and with numerous connector types, including BNC, UHF, Microdot, SMA, SMB, and LIMO. 30
Advanced Transducer Technology Ultran s newest technology includes large low frequency GMP transducers, non-contact arrays, and contact/immersion phased array transducers for focused energy delivery.
