1 STARLINE MiniBridger Express Amplifier FEATURES OF THE : 870 MHz bandwidth 28 db operational gain for trunk port, 37 db operational gain for bridger ports 16 db return loss 60/90 V powering Meets Telcordia GR-1098-Core voltage surge requirements using surge waveforms as described in IEEE C62.41 FCC and CENELEC approved Bode equalization (thermal or auto controlled) 15 ampere capability Directional coupler -20 db test points Power factor corrected power supply DESCRIPTION Motorola s STARLINE series MiniBridger Express, model, provides a true two-stage trunk output with superior distortion performance, along with two high-gain bridger outputs in a MiniBridger (MB*/*) housing. Even though fiber is being driven deeper in many networks, there remains a large number of operators worldwide who require flexibility from a wide variety of RF building blocks. The MBE is one of many Motorola building blocks. With 870 MHz bandpass and a power factor corrected power supply, the MBE provides system designers with another powerful tool to deliver reliable, cost-effective HFC networks. 60/90 VOLT POWERING The is capable of 60 or 90 Vac powering. The MPPS II 60/90 Volt power pack provides a regulated 24 Vdc output at 2.0 Amperes maximum over an ac input voltage range from 38 Vac through 90 Vac rms. The power supply also contains the additional feature of a two-position ( and ) selector that sets the startup voltage of the power supply. The is shipped with the selector set for 60 Vac (). There is no damage to the amplifier if the jumper is not changed. However, changing the jumper ensures that the dc supply does not turn on until the proper input voltage level is reached either 38 Vac or 55 Vac. This prevents excessive loading of the system power supply during turn-on after a system shutdown. The standard gas discharge tube surge arrestor can be replaced with the Fast Transfer Electronic Crowbar (FTEC-BTA) type surge suppressor for longer life over- voltage protection. POWER FTOR CORRECTION The STARLINE MiniBridger Express provides power factor correction in the power supply design. This feature lowers the current draw of the amplifier and improves the overall system power supply efficiency. 1 June 23, 2004

2 STARLINE MiniBridger Express Amplifier DIRECTIONAL COUPLER TEST POINTS Other features include -20 db directional coupler test points. The is enclosed in the MB-HSG which allows access to test points without opening the housing. FORWARD PATH The operational gain of the STARLINE MiniBridger Express is 28 db for the trunk port, and 37 db gain for the bridger ports with 16 db of return loss at all ports for maximum RF power transfer. Output level control is achieved through the use of an interstage Bode equalizer which compensates for coaxial cable attenuation changes due to temperature. Equalization may be controlled manually, with a thermal drive unit (model TDU) or with a single pilot closed loop automatic drive unit (model ADU-XXX/*). Both the TDU and the ADU boards are common to the STARLINE family of amplifiers. ADUs utilize Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) filters for determining pilot frequency. This improves amplifier stability over temperature and enhances the amplifier's distortion performance during temperature changes. The uses modular diplex filters which can be changed for a different frequency split as required. The amplifier can be configured with S-split filters for a 5-40 MHz return and a MHz forward band. K-splits (5-42 MHz/ MHz) and A-splits (5-65 MHz/ MHz) are also available. These same filters can be used for all Motorola RF distribution amplifiers. To further ensure system flexibility, installation ease and maintenance, the amplifier is engineered for compatibility with standard accessories, such as attenuators, equalizers, ADUs or TDUs, return amplifiers, automotive fuses, and FTEC-BTA crowbar circuits. RETURN PATH Return amplifier kits can be ordered with high gain hybrids providing 18 db minimum station gain. Return path equalizers from 0 to 12 db can be customer selected. Optional thermal compensation comes in the form of a plug-in -TH*C, which stabilizes gain and match over temperature extremes. CONFIGURATION To reduce customer costs and to accommodate customer specific needs, the STARLINE can be configured for certain accessories in Motorola's factory at no additional cost to the customer. Please refer to the configurator for options (see attached). 2
