1 Statistics on Weed Lists at (Note: These are NOT final statistics. These statistics are prior to the return of boxes by Better World Books.) To those who have asked for information on the number of non-fiction titles withdrawn from the library collections... These statistics are organized by the lists as they were submitted for evaluation. Some lists hold entire Dewey ranges. For others, where the holdings are large, the lists may represent just part of a Dewey range. In the more detailed lists further down the page, I have included information on the subjects that fall within each Dewey range. Collections with data on # and % of items 10 or more years old This first set of statistics shows the collection before weeding and after weeding, with the number and percentage of items with a publication date of 2002 or earlier. Weed Lists Completed (~42% of Non-Fiction) Collection Before Weeding # weeds # kept # weeds Collection After Weeding Dewey range Subject # in coll # >10 yr old % >10 yr old pub x-2002 pub x-2002 pub 2003-x # in coll # >10 yr old % >10 yr old 000s Generalities 1, % % 100s Philosophy & Psychology 1, % , % 200s Religion 2, % , % Social Sciences 3,956 1,070 27% , % Social Sciences 2,981 1,144 38% , % 400s Language % % 500s Natural Science & Math 2,690 1,573 58% , % Technology (Applied Sci) 4,272 1,712 40% 1, , % ish Technology (Applied Sci) 4,394 2,065 47% 1, , % Technology (Applied Sci) 1, % % The Arts 1,901 1,189 63% 1, % The Arts 2,113 1,086 51% , % TOTAL 29,502 13,221 45% TOTAL 9,135 4, TOTAL 20,367 4,086 20% Note: Areas in red above were definitely in the last shipment (88 boxes) that left the library; these are expected in the boxes being returned by Better World Books. Because BWB has now located 200 boxes to be returned, many other areas will come back as well. These items will be re-evaluated. 2 Circulation comparison for older and newer items (This is general collection information, not related to weeding.) The following statistics compile the circulation data for older items vs. newer items. Note that areas not yet evaluated are not listed below. This set of brief stats shows each Dewey range broken down with check-out data for items older and newer than 10 years. Note that this data is a comparison by publication date of all items in the Dewey range. It does not represent the weeded items. Many items 2002 and earlier were still retained in the collection. Each Dewey list has two lines. The white line is data for items with a publication date of 2002 or earlier. The pink line is data for items with a publication date of 2003 or more recent. The comparison shows checkout data, both number and percentage, of items that had 0-3 YTD checkouts, 4-9 YTD checkouts, and 10 or more YTD checkouts. Checkout (cko) data is for the YTD 18-month period from December 2011 (when we moved to the CU Catalog ) through May The 10+ cko column represents a very wide checkout range. Some items circulated times in the 18-month period. The final column indicates the highest # of YTD checkouts in that range. 3 The following pages provide the detailed analysis of items weeded and retained on each of the lists. For a simple view, look at the red-text cells. On the far left is the number of items weeded and retained from the list. The far right shows the percentage of items weeded and retained from the list. Following the data, is the detail of what subjects are included in the Dewey range. For those who like more detail, each list has four lines. The first two lines under the Dewey heading are for items with publication dates 2002 or earlier. The white line has data for items that were weeded. The blue line has data for items that were retained. The next two lines are for items with publication dates 2003 or more recent. The white line has data for items that were weeded. The blue line has data for items that were retained. Then after a gap line, the two white lines are totaled, and the two blue lines are totaled, to yield the combined number and percentage of items weeded and retained. Note that the percentages vary from list to list because publication date is more relevant to some subjects.
