Agilent N9340A Hand-held Spectrum Analyzer Technical Overview Put the speed and performance of Agilent spectrum analysis in the hands of your engineers

N9340A Hand-held Spectrum Analyzer Avoid intermittent communication know your spectrum No matter whether you are handling military communications, a WSP, or involved with spectrum management you need to avoid intermittent communication. You need a reliable, accurate and detailed picture of the spectrum over which you are working. When you test, you need fast data capture to help locate and identify these elusive, transient interference signals. That s why every N9340A spectrum analyzer has a truly fast sweep time. It requires less time measure across the bandwidth, to obtain more reliable test results and so helps you achieve more for the same investment of time and money. Have confidence in your test results Spurious signals and noise are of great concern, too, to all network users. A superior combination of low DANL and SSB phase noise coupled with narrower RBW means your signal measurements are more reliable and you will have more confidence in your test results. The N9340A s low DANL and SSB phase noise help you detect really low-level signals (spurious or noise) which are close to the carrier. You will avoid missing such difficult-to-identify signals close to a carrier, which would otherwise lead to insufficient or even wrong understanding of the spectrum. Frequencyrange:100kHz to 3 G Hz Phase noise: -87 dbc at 30 khz offset DANL: 125dBm (RBW = 30 Hz) 145dBm with preamp Amplitudeaccuracy: ±1.5 db RBW:30 Hz to 1 MHz VBW:3 Hz to 1MHz Speed Sensitivity In fact, the N9340A s RBW is the narrowest in its class. The narrow ( 3dB) bandwidth of the analyzer ensures that it is even easier to identify, resolve, and measure two signals that are close together. Additionally, this, together with a resolution filter shapefactor of less than 5, provides a superior ability to resolve closely adjacent signals with unequal amplitudes. Moreover, the narrow RBW means that the spectrum analyzer introduce minimal noise itself, so helping to further reduce noise levels and improve DANL. Resolutio n Savetesttime Make accurate measurements Obtain reliable results 01

Superior sensitivity With more wireless devices on the market requiring greater bandwidth usage, the ability to discriminate between different signals becomes more challenging. It s under such demanding conditions that the superior performance of an N9340A analyzer proves its worth. It has one of the best sensitivity and selectivity specifications. The phase noise is 87 dbc at 30 khz offset, with a DANL of 125dBm (RBW = 30 Hz), or 145 dbm with preamplifier. An optional preamplifier with low noise figure further improves analyzer sensitivity. Do more with less Testing in the field often means operating away from mains power supplies. Batteries need to have the longest possible operating time before re-charge is necessary. You ll find an Agilent 9340A analyzer has superior power management, providing an impressive 4-hour battery operating time. It s easy to operate for an entire day in the field. There is an advanced, in-built battery management system. This helps provide a useful extended battery operating time of typically four hours: and just one battery and a spare, or a quick re-charge from any vehicle using the supplied auto-lighter charger allows you to operate for an entire day away from a mains power source. Signal interference test and monitoring General signal field strength analysis Channel power measurement High power measurement Scalar transmission and reflection measurement On-site equipment repair Radio base-station installation and maintenance Field device alignment: satellite antenna tuning Field repair of installed equipment Supporting network interoperability Low-level EMC An N9340A spectrum analyzer supports two ways to measure the occupied bandwidth, in Percentage or in dbc An occupied bandwidth measurement integrates the power of the displayed spectrum and puts markers at the frequencies between which the interested signal is contained. Output signal meeting standards or design specification? 02

N9340A Hand-held Spectru m A nalyzer Speed at your fingertips Spectrum bandwidth is a finite resource, therefore spectrum usage requires management. Most regulatory authorities responsible for administering frequency allocation require service suppliers and network operators to perform routine monitoring of signal power and transmission frequency stability. An important application of spectrum analysis is identifying interfering signals. These often arise from illegal transmissions, and may cause impairment of services for authorized users, often resulting in financial loss. At worst, these interfering signals could restrict critical communications of civil aviation and emergency services, so potentially jeopardize lives. Some sources of interference are more intermittent than regular transmissions. Such spurious signals can be hard to eliminate because it is difficult to identify and isolate them. Now you have the best possibility of finding and identifying these elusive interfering signals. With an impressively fast sweep a minimum non-zero-span sweep time of 10 ms, or 1.5 ms FFT an Agilent N9340A hand-held spectrum analyzer increases the probability of your detecting and capturing spurious or transient signals. Minimize Use channe l p ower to measures both power and power spectral density in a user-specified channel bandwidth. One marker pair on the display indicates the edges of the channel bandwidth. Its quick and easy to set center frequency, reference level, and channel bandwidth. Measure to digital mobile radio standard s : 3GPP WCDMA, cdmaone, and CDMA20001x. Or use this function to perform time-domain power measurement within a timeslot of TDMA, such as GSM and EDGE. A N9340A has all settings for these predefined. RMS detector is used to perform channel power measurement. interference Wireless service providers need to minimize the interference caused by power leaking into adjacent transmit channels. Adjacent channel power ratio N eedin g to know channe l p ower in a d efined transmission channel? (ACPR) measurements help in the checking of signal spectrums and in identifying and controlling sources of interference. 5 Tough enough for the military You ll find that this Agilent analyzer is tough enough for military applications, too. Apart from its generally compact, rugged construction, the large rubberized grips wrap around both ends, providing addition robust protection from rough handling. In addition, the sealed keypad and screen are moisture and dust proof. Of course, there s a protective carry case that provides further security for your analyzer. Simply gathe measurement data in the field or later inclusion into reports in a PC environment. USB memory stick makes for easy file transfer of stored screen shots (choice of BMP or GIF formats), measurement file data and settings, even in the middle of an instrument operation in the filed. Then generate, edit and print the report very conveniently at a more suitable time and location. Look at results in detail Detailed analysis of results in the field is not always convenient or possible. That s when you ll need to store the results for later investigation. Connecting to a PC is simple and data transfer fast via the USB cable. Adjacen t c hanne l powe r r a tio (ACPR) See scans clearly True ease of use As with all the newest Agilent portable field testers, operating under challenging bright sunlight or other difficult natural lighting conditions is no problem. The larger than usual 7.2-inch (18.3 cm), TFT color LCD provides a superior high-resolution display with a clear, bright trace. There is no need to ensure you operate in the shade. The combination of well-designed hard key and intuitive soft-key functions ensures that making measurements on the analyzer really is easy to learn. In test lab and bench-top use, USB interface and PC software also support PC remote control of each Agilent N9340A spectrum analyzer. This allows appropriate use of a large format PC screen. Windows -compatible software provides automatic storage of selected data and graphics and comparison of previous results against a current measurement. Users around the world will find operation is easy. Apart from English, there are ten other user-selectable, on-screen languages, including Chinese, Japanese and a number of European languages (see Specifications General). 04

Safety at high input levels Normally, the transmission power of a BTS is not greater than 33dBm. Therefore, the N9340A can be used for most cases. However, should the power level exceed 33 dbm, the the input protection switch actives to protect the instrument from damage. The maximum safe input level is > +33 dbm for 3 minutes at most (50 VDC maximum). outstanding usability S uperior RBW DANL Sweep speed SSBphase noise Performance at the right price The combination of excellent DANL and RBW, with faster sweep times and superior usability and ergonomic design ensure the Agilent 9340A hand-held spectrum analyzer provides you with a good balance of price and performance for a wide range of RF field test use. Spectrum analysis is a fundamental of RF testing and signal characterization. But it is not always that engineers and technicians have the benefit of full development laboratory facilities or a manufacturing environment in which to work. For a wide range of users, whether in military Communications, wireless service providers (WSPs), or broadcasting services, testing in the field is a necessity. Spectrum monitoring and signal testing under these conditions requires a different standard of spectrum analyzer. Agilent continues to extend its premier RF test technologies portfolio to include new, low-cost test solutions. We now further broaden this range to include hand-held test spectrum analysis. Affordable fast support Of course, buying test equipment from Agilent s low-cost series still puts you in touch with top-line service and support should you need it. SO, you can be confident that you are making the right choice of test equipment for the right price. 05
