In physical science a first essential step in the direction of learning any subject is to find principles of numerical reckoning and practicable methods of measuring some quality connected with it. I often say that Validation Verification Quantitative Analysis when you can measure what you are speaking about and express it in numbers you know something about it; but when you cannot express it in numbers, your knowledge is of a meagre and unsatisfactory kind: it may be the beginning of knowledge, but you have scarcely, in your thoughts advanced to the stage of science. --William Thomson, Lord Kelvin,

12 Test Challenge Example #1: Massive MIMO Further Test Considerations N UE s M Base Station Antennas To build a test system for this Base Station, do we need MxN channels of transmit and receive? Number of data streams vs number of antennas? Can we control the # of spatial modes? What about fading/channel emulation? 12

13 The importance of antennas Features providing a few tenths of a db of baseband performance are considered worth fighting for Step 1 Measure with a micrometer Once conducted signals reach RF, allowances for implementation margin and test system uncertainty can account for 2 or 3 db lost performance Step 2 Mark with chalk But the radiated performance of devices taking into account the antennas can easily vary by 10 db or more Step 3 Cut with an axe Speed to Insight: Metrology & Measurement in 5G
