2 Carlos Estella and Diego Sánchez, designers of SMART ARRAY 2 The new SMART ARRAY system by EGi represents a significant advance in professional sound systems for installation. SMART ARRAY combines a small size with a surprising sound quality and precise control of directivity. On top of this its sophisticated look, great flexibility and multiple mounting options make it a truly comprehensive system. The Line Array operating principle is based on drivers or loudspeakers placed in a line, as close together as possible, so that one single wavefront is generated and they can behave as one single loudspeaker. Traditional systems generate spherical waves, while line arrays generate a cylindrical wave. This enables us to control directivity much more effectively since all of the sound energy is concentrated at the front, the advantage being that there is less attenuation of the sound level over a distance and greater coverage can be achieved.

3 CONTROL AND DIRECTIVITY COMPACT AND VERSATILE CRYSTAL CLEAR SOUND The main feature of the SMART ARRAY system is the control it allows when projecting a sound beam, given that its projection, intensity and vertical aperture can be selected. This means that the different parts of a room can be reached from one point (mono configuration) or from two points (stereo configuration). Its size, similar that of the outstretched palm of your hand (24 cm) makes this a really compact system that achieves great sound quality in large, medium-size and small environments, taking up very little space and blending in with the rest of the décor. It is totally versatile and offers the option of a one-diffuser to twelvediffuser setup per system, with angles of 0º, 2.5º, 5º, 10º up to 14º. With the use of compact 3 loudspeakers and ribbon tweeters, the SMART ARRAY system achieves crisp, clear mids and trebles and a higher level of coherence than other arrays, thanks to its well-dimensioned diffusers. And its bass frequencies are just as good. Thanks to the rear bass reflex tuning, it can reach frequencies of 85 Hz, with good sound enhancement at 53 Hz. 3

5 CONTROL OF DIRECTIVITY Directivity and phase coherence are this system s chief features. Traditional systems do not permit the same amount of control over directivity and they normally deliver sound energy to unnecessary zones where sound reflections are generated which, on top of the original signal, will notably affect the intelligibility of the system. If there is precise control of the vertical directivity of the system, ceiling and floor reflections can be avoided and all of the energy can be concentrated in the listeners zone. Due to the compact size of the enclosures, the distance between the 3 diffusers is only 9 cm. This means that the system performs totally in phase from 50 Hz to 1.8 KHz and from there on it is a question of combining with the ribbon tweeters, which permit vertical connection up to 23 KHz. These properties mean that we can reduce or close vertical coverage by at least -50%. In this way, when we add enclosures we obtain a reduction in the vertical splay angle, a reduction that varies between -3 and -5 db (SPL) instead of the -6 db(spl) of traditional systems. Another feature of this system is its phase coherence - the very short distances between diffusers mean that most of the phase lag and negative lobes that occur between larger enclosures are eliminated. SURPRISING SOUND QUALITY This is another of the outstanding features of the SMART ARRAY system. At EGi we have always placed the utmost importance on high quality loudspeakers for our systems. As professionals and sound engineers we know how difficult it is to obtain precise results at midrange and treble frequencies. Most of the line array systems use cones above 6 for these frequencies however SMART ARRAY uses 3 loudspeakers to achieve very low distortion ratios in these mid and treble frequency ranges, due to the short distance between coils and suspension rings. This negative effect does in fact occur in larger diameter loudspeakers due to the rebounds generated in larger cones. To complete this system, EGi uses an advanced ribbon tweeter to reproduce high frequencies. This ribbon driver performs better than a waveguide system, achieving crystal clear trebles, with great control of directivity and, due to their rectangular shape, better coupling between them. Finally, despite its compact size, the response in bass frequencies is surprising, thanks to its bass-reflex tuning at 53 Hz. 5

6 ITS MODULAR DESIGN ALLOWS... VERSATILE SETUP 6 Different individual ways of connecting enclosures. We can set up totally straight arrays (0º - the system achieves maximum projection as the coverage is extremely narrow) and other formations ranging from 2.5º - 5º - 10º and 14º, that allow wider coverage to perfectly take in the whole of the listening zone. Various types of fastening elements, enabling installation on many different surfaces. The standard accessories available allow different installation options: ceiling, suspended, wall, and floor-standing tripods for mobile installations. The full suspension kit also offers a feature that differentiates this system from the rest: a complete, discreet, simple system that is directly for fitters and allows the system to be flown at different heights. The system comprises 3 cables, 2 fitted at the front and the third, at the back, which is used to give the system the required slant as well as making it extra secure as the cable passes through the individual pins on each enclosure. The SMART ARRAY system allows line setups of differing coverage. From just 1 unit to a maximum of 12 units per setup. Installation is simple, safe and the accessories allow numerous possible solutions.

7 COMPACTNESS Another great feature of the SMART ARRAY system is its compact size. To get an idea, one enclosure can fit in the palm of your hand. Architects and fitters now have a system that discreetly blends in with the surrounds whilst offering a new feature: precise control of directivity. Its dimensions are 24 cm (width) x 19.5 cm (depth) x 9.45 cm (height) which gives a total volume of 4.4 litres and a weight of 1.85 Kg per unit. This small enclosure certainly offers a wide variety of installation options, adapting to corners and very small spaces. IT IS THE IDEAL SYSTEM FOR... The curvilinear array should always be mounted in front of the stage and, as shown, said curvilinear array would be divided into two parts: A top part of the array at 0º to project the maximum sound pressure (where attenuation in trebles only oscillates between -3 and -5 db each time the distance is doubled) and to achieve the maximum length. A bottom part of the array in an open splay arrangement that can be adjusted to overlap angles of 2.5º -5º - 10º and 14º, to complete full coverage of the tiered seating.
