8 Pge 8 Wiring Digrm for Dt Recorder Using n Externl Bttery Opertion The SDI-12 protocol llows multiple devices to be ttched to one SDI-12 port In order for the dt recorder nd devices to fcilitte unmbiguous communictions ech device on the SDI-12 port is given unique ddress The defult ddress of the Series S100 trnsducer (s shipped from the fctory) is 0 (zero) If this is the only device on the SDI-12 port on your recorder then you my leve the ddress t 0 If other devices re wired to tht port then you will need to insure tht they ech hve unique ddresses Setting ddress will be discussed lter SDI-12 commnds re conctention of three fields The first is the device ddress This is single chrcter typiclly in the rnge 0 to 9 but cn lso use the chrcters to z nd A to Z The second is the commnd which my consist of severl chrcters The commnd chrcters re lwys upper cse The lst is the commnd termintor which is lwys n exclmtion point (!) Setting the Address If more thn one device is wired to the SDI-12 port you will need to ssure tht they ll re set up with unique ddresses If you re not sure you cn connect them one t time nd use the Address Query commnd?! to red the ddresses Only one device cn be connected to the SDI-12 port when using this commnd The device will respond with its ddress To chnge the ddress of device use the Chnge Address commnd The syntx is An!, where is the present ddress A is the Set Sensor Address commnd nd n is the new ddress The device will return the new ddress For exmple, if 0A4! is trnsmitted, the sensor ddress will be re-progrmmed to 4 nd the sensor will return 4 To verify tht the SDI12 sensor is responding on its ddress use the Send Identifiction commnd I! Write Temperture Compenstion Threshold tt tt is the threshold vlue Mking Mesurements with the SDI-12 Sensor There re two commnds tht cuse the SDI12 sensor to tke mesurements nd store them for subsequent retrievl The first is the Non-concurrent Mesurement Commnd M The second is the Concurrent Mesurement Commnd C The sensor responds to both of the commnds with tttn where is the sensor ddress, ttt is the number of seconds before the dt will be redy, nd n is the number of dt items tht will hve been prepred For the Acclim SDI12 sensor the number of dt items is 9 Non-Concurrent Mesurement When using the non-concurrent commnd, the recorder wits for the sensor to complete its mesurement nd then retrieves the result The sensor sends Service Request code to the recorder fter prepring the dt so tht the recorder will retrieve the dt t the ppernce of the Service Request or fter the indicted time hs expired, whichever occurs first The Service Request code is simply the ddress of the sensor, followed by crrige return nd line feed chrcters Concurrent Mesuremet When using the concurrent mesurement commnd the sensor does not return service request when the dt is redy for retrievl The recorder is llowed to perform other communictions to other devices while the sensor is mking the mesurement nd prepring the dt Then when the recorder is vilble nd the indicted mesurement time hs elpsed the recorder retrieves the dt Dt Retrievl To retrieve the requested mesurement dt the recorder sends Dx commnd to the sensor, where x is 0 or 1 The D0 commnd returns the bsic 4 mesurement items: Volumetric Wter Content, Soil Temperture, Soil Reltive Permittivity, nd Soil Electricl Conductivity The D1 Commnd returns: Wveform Mximum Risetime, Wveform Amplitude t Mximum Risetime, Wveform Propgtion Time t Mximum Risetime, Uncompensted Wveform Propgtion Time, Compensted Wveform Propgtion Time nd the Wveform Mesurement Spn The syntx for the commnd is: Dx!, where is the sensor ddress nd x is the dt item number tht is requested Below is tble showing the dt vilble from the SDI12 sensor nd the

This commnd is clled the Strt Mesurement commnd The 5 in this commnd is the ddress of the sensor you wish to respond to the commnd It will cuse the SDI12 sensor to begin the process of tking set of

15 Pge 15 mesurements The sensor will immeditely respond to this commnd s follows: 50019<CR><LF> This response strts with the ddress of the sensor (5), then continues with the number of seconds tht re required to tke the redings, 001 (1 second), then finishes with the number of dt items tht will be returned with ech mesurement request (9) Every response from the sensor is terminted with crrige return nd line feed chrcter After the sensor hs finished its mesurements it trnsmits service request to the recorder: 5<CR><LF> The service request is just the ddress of the sensor The recorder then sends commnd to get the first set of dt items: 5D0! The items requested re: volumetric wter content, soil temperture, soil permittivity nd soil electricl conductivity Upon receiving this commnd the sensor responds with: <CR><LF> The first 5 is the sensor ddress The remining string contins the requested dt items ech preceded by + or - sign This completes the four bsic redings from the sensor If the user desires the dditionl 5 dt items form the sensor he would progrm the dt recorder to issue the 2nd dt retrievl commnd, D1! 17 Pge 17 Dt Communictions Error Checking So fr, ll Strt Mesurement Commnds tht we hve discussed hve requested dt wherein no error checking is done to verify the correct reception of the dt by the recorder The SDI-12 specifiction provides for error checking by using n dditionl commnd chrcter C with the Strt Mesurement commnd Thus when the commnds MC! or CC! re trnsmitted to the sensor, the sensor ppends CRC code to the end of the returned dt This code is generted from the dt in such mnner tht if the dt chnges in the trnsmission the chnge cn be detected in the recorder If the recorder experiences such corruption in the dt it will repet the dt request utomticlly 336 Verify Commnd The SDI-12 specifiction requires specil commnd for the purpose of verifying tht the sensor is working properly Acclim s implementtion of tht commnd is s follows: 1 The recorder sends out the verify commnd: V! 2 Upon receiving the verify commnd the sensor will respond with: tttn where is the sensor ddress, ttt is the time required to mke verifiction redings, nd n is the number of dt items tht will be returned For this commnd ttt = 003 nd n = 1 3 The sensor tkes 3 full sets of redings The corrected propgtion times from the three redings re sved nd compred If ny of these propgtion times re out rnge or if they differ by n uncceptble mount n error is cknowledged Next the volumetric wter content is clculted from the men of the three redings The sensor then sends out service request: 4 The recorder issues red dt commnd D0: D0!
