2 Presenter Brent Baird has more than 35 years of experience in Ultrasonic Flow Meter technology, application engineering, product development, distribution, marketing & sales. In 1977 Brent and his father Dr James Baird founded Dynasonics a manufacturer of Ultrasonic Flow Meters. Brent is currently the CEO of Instruments Direct an ultrasonic flow meter distributor/renter and engineering firm. In addition he is also the CEO of Noncontact Meters, a manufacturer of Ultrasonic Flow Meters. 6 Theory : Doppler Technology THE DOPPLER METER CONTINUOUSLY TRANSMITS HIGH FREQUENCY SOUND THAT TRAVELS THROUGH THE PIPE WALL AND INTO THE FLOWING LIQUID. SOUND IS REFLECTED BACK TO THE SENSOR FROM SOLIDS OR BUBBLES IN THE FLUID. IF THE FLUID IS IN MOTION, THE ECHOES RETURN AT AN ALTERED FREQUENCY PROPORTIONATE TO FLOW VELOCITY. 11 Theory: Transit Technology TRANSIT TIME FLOW METERS UTILIZE TWO TRANSDUCERS WHICH FUNCTION AS BOTH ULTRASONIC TRANSMITTERS AND RECEIVERS. THEY OPERATE BY ALTERNATELY TRANSMITTING AND RECEIVING A FREQUENCY MODULATED BURST OF SOUND ENERGY BETWEEN THE TWO TRANSDUCERS. THE BURST IS FIRST TRANSMITTED IN THE DIRECTION OF FLUID FLOW AND THEN AGAINST FLUID FLOW. SINCE SOUND ENERGY IN A MOVING LIQUID IS CARRIED FASTER WHEN IT TRAVELS IN THE DIRECTION OF FLUID FLOW (DOWNSTREAM) THAN IT DOES WHEN IT TRAVELS AGAINST FLUID FLOW (UPSTREAM), A DIFFERENTIAL IN THE TIMES OF FLIGHT WILL OCCUR. FLOW THE SOUND'S TIME OF FLIGHT IS ACCURATELY MEASURED IN BOTH DIRECTIONS AND THE DIFFERENCE IN TIME OF FLIGHT CALCULATED. Aug 6-8, 2013 Orlando, Florida, USA 11
