2 Coupling Capacitors Introduction With over 40 years of successful field experience, Trench is a recognized world leader in the design and manufacture of specialty high voltage equipment. In addition to reactors, high voltage instrument transformers and bushings, Trench designs and manufactures a complete line of Power Line Carrier (PLC) equipment. This includes transmitter - receivers such as On Off Keyed Carrier sets for blocking type relaying and FSK Carrier sets for transfer trip or unblocking relaying as well as line traps, coupling capacitors, line tuners, hybrids and ancillary devices. PLC utilizes the high voltage power transmission line as a transmission medium for high frequency communications signals. An efficient coupling path must be provided between the PLC transceiver and the high voltage line. This is normally achieved by the proper combination of line traps, coupling capacitors and line tuners or coupling devices. In conjunction with the coupling capacitor, the line tuner or coupling device provides a low loss signal path for selected PLC frequencies while attenuating other PLC frequencies and noise. This brochure describes the features and characteristics of Trench Coupling Capacitors (CC's). Since Coupling Capacitors are related to Capacitor Voltage Transformers but without electromagnetic circuitry, please also refer to brochure E (Capacitor Voltage Transformers) in the Instrument Transformer section of the Trench catalogue. Product Range Trench offers several models of Coupling Capacitors for customer selection. The models vary by their nominal capacitance and cantilever strength for a selected voltage class. The capacitance value is important for proper coordination of power line carrier coupling components and is listed in the following table. Note that Trench can supply Coupling Capacitors with capacitance values which are either higher or lower than the values shown. Please contact Trench for additional details. The cantilever strength of a Coupling Capacitor is important when the Coupling Capacitor is utilized as the sole support of a Line Trap. Trench Coupling Capacitors have the following approximate allowable working cantilever strength: Type TECF/TECP or ft-lb Type TEICF or ft-lb Type TEHCF/TEHCP or ft-lb Coupling Capacitors can be supplied with a standard base box mounting or a flat base, as required by each specific customer specification.
