2 Operating priciple Rotor- and Statorantenna - inductive power and rf-data transmission Rotor Unit - sensor supply - signal conditioning - rf data transmission Sensor: - strain gauge (SG) - thermocouple - etc. Stator Unit - generation of inductive power supply - data receiver Control Unit - central control module - data evaluation and -reproduction AXON's J Series, Close Proximity telemetry systems are designed to measure and transmit data reliably from rotating objects such as driveshafts, gearwheels, pulleys etc. contactless. Torque and temperature measurements are just some of the applications. All systems are equipped with an inductive power supply between the Stator and Rotor Units which eliminates the need for any battery on the shaft. However, in special cases, each rotor unit can be powered with battery if required. The telemetry systems offer flexible design options even when space is very limited. We offer a design service for individual measurement requirements. 2
3 IPT - Intelligent Power Transmission AXON's Intelligent Power Transmission (IPT) offers unique flexibility compared to other telemetry systems. The inductive power supply is monitored dynamically and constantly adjusted to maintain optimum operating range - this eliminates age and temperature related variations in performance. In addition, due to the design of control loop, the stator transmission coil can be formed to any shape or dimension from a few centimetres to 30cm or even more with no loss of signal quality. For automotive drive shaft applications, which can have very large displacements due to suspension travel, specialised installations can be required Thanks to the wide capacity of the inductive power supply, the transmission coil can easily be designed as an oval shape. Previous complex adjustments to the transmission coil is no longer necessary, both, inductive and data transmission work effectively over a wide range. In tightly enclosed environments, the transmission coil can be connected to the Stator Unit with extension wires up to 150mm. As the sensor element is not sensitive to metalic components, the system can cope with many difficult applications - even gearbox measurements. In this case the Stator Unit can be mounted to the outside of the gearbox housing, while the transmission coil is mounted inside - the data transmission is not affected by the metalic environment no by oil flow. 3
4 The basic system components AXON are constantly working to implement new system designs to meet customers' individual requirements. A lot of thought has gone into the design and all components within one product type use the same carrier frequency. This means that any existing Control Unit, Stator or Rotor Unit(s) can be swapped and operated without the need to any change settings or calibration. 5 1-channel AXON J1DB - Digital 1-channel telemetry with inductive power monitoring - strain gauge with inductive power monitoring Transfer of a single measurement channel of rotating objects is one of the most telemetry applications in automotive and mechanical engineering. Due to IPT, AXON s intelligent inductive power supply, battery powered shafts are a thing of the past. As in conventional single channel telemetry systems, the verification of energy reserves on the Rotor Unit is very difficult or even impossible, the J1DB-system transmits the value of inductively coupled power supply voltage of the Rotor Unit on a seperate channel. The Control Unit has two outputs: The first channel supplies the amplified strain gauge measurement. The second channel transmits the inductive coupled voltage on the Rotor Unit by a factor of 1:3. Thus, the quality of the inductive power transfer can be tested and monitored after the installation of the shaft even during the measurement process. Changes in the supplied voltage, e.g., due to operational axially or radially displacements of the shaft can be observed and evaluated by the dynamic transmission of its value. The Rotor Units are available as chip version in aluminum housing as well as a flexible printed circuit board. With a temperature range of up to -40 C C in continuous operation (without thermal encapsulation) the J1DB can be used in virtually any situation. 5

9 Telemetry systems Torqueshafts - installation - calibration Torque-shafts In addition to telemetry systems AXON Systems can also provide ready to use torque transducers. The careful design of the components is reflected in the reliability of the AXON transducers. The strain gauges are installed with a hot glue method which guarantees reliable results even at high ambient temperatures. Additionally, the final glass fibre bonding of the structure using only the highest quality materials ensure reliable data under almost any of the harshest of conditions. Individual positioning allows measurements even under difficult physical conditions. By using an inductive power supply to the Rotor Unit, it is possible to encapsulate the complete application in a high-strength composite fibre material which protects the electronics and sensors against water, dirt and mechanical damage. The complex covering method also provides protection for long-term measurements or abuse tests and ensures optimal performance of the transducers. In addition to the highest quality manufacturing standards, we also strive to ensure the shortest possible delivery time. A set of transducers is generally ready to ship within 2 weeks. Even shorter delivery times are possible on request. We also offer an installation service for flanges and any other rotating components. As well as the application of torque transducers, also temperature transducers can be manufactured. All transducers are individually planned in detail as to the positioning of the instrumentation and calibration with our customers. Torque shafts are set to any desired measuring range and are calibrated on our hydraulic torque test bench. calibration torque up to Nm clockwise and anti-clockwise calibration 9
10 EMC-tested All of the AXON J Series systems transmit the inductive power in the lower khz-range. This ensures that the energy is distributed only to the designated area i.e., to the immediate vicinity of the transmission area. AXON system have been tested by Independent EMC test laboratories and all the telemetry systems can be used safely in any environment without influencing any other electronic equipment. By way of a reliable capacitive coupling any external electromagnetic influences are virtually eliminated. Measurements in hybrid electric vehicles and other high-voltage devices are possible without interference. Original Measurement AXON J1 10
