Radio Observing Log 1/5/2017 6/5/2017 Andrew Thornett LRO Detecting meteors using FunCube Dongle Pro Plus 1/5/2017: First definite detection circled on screenshot below using FunCube Dongle Pro Plus on Dell E6400: Above is my first definite detection of a meteor using Dell E6400 laptop and FunCube Dongle Pro Plus (with USB extension cable between laptop and Pro Plus) and Slim Jim aerial on 4 x poles height mast outside log cabin. I know this is a meteor as I had speakers turned on and I could hear the associated beep and was watching as it appeared. This tells me where meteors will appear on this screen. Rates currently low on Yaesu FT 817 in log cabin which is running simultaneously and 5/8 aerial. Another has appeared on Dell/FunCube good one:
A signal was detected simultaneously on the Yaesu with the 5/8 aerial in the log cabin. Another couple mins later (these screenshots on this radio observing log are all from the Dell laptop) the following appeared: Whilst this one appeared I had muted the speakers using the mixer control confirms that this can successfully be done and still detect meteors.
And another coming reasonably fast: I changed from Moxon (rear mounted) to the Slim Jim aerial this morning I had no detections of meteors at all with Moxon overnight comparisons with Yaesu/5/8 aerial show that, although rates were low, meteors that appeared on the Yaesu/5/8 did not appear with FunCube/Moxon combination. However FunCube/Slim Jim combination is working really well this morning and I am detecting exactly same meteors with both FunCube/Slim Jim as with Yaesu/5/8 (they are located next to each other). Some other meteor detections using FunCube:

At 11:13 aerial feeder cables from 5/8 aerial and Slim Jim swapped around, so that now: Log Cabin 5/8 aerial goes to Dell E6400 Latitude laptop and FunCube Dongle Pro Plus Slim Jim aerial on 4 poles outside log cabin goes to Log Cabin PC and Yaesu FT 817 Almost immediately a meteor was visible on both E6400 and Log Cabin PC. And another very soon afterwards:
I changed the amplitude settings on the E6400 to give range of around 40dB (although floor differs between machines around 56dB on log cabin machine (with Yaesu FT 817) and 120dB on E6400 (with FunCube Dongle Pro Plus). On these first two meteor detections above it appeared that amplitude on 5/8 < on Slim Jim (likewise similar difference last night with computers and radios swapped around) suggests Slim JIm aerial out performs 5/8 is this the aerial or the height? First task is to leave setup as is to confirm this difference over next 2 3 hours Then try lowering height of Slim Jim to see if difference persists Then possibly swap 5/8 aerial for Slim Jim on log cabin However I have just noticed that the gain on the Yaesu/log cabin PC was 8dB on WSJT 10 which might explain above difference I have corrected gain to 0dB. Another meteor:
Quite the opposite now gain corrected the discrepancy between log cabin peak amplitude and that on E6400 has been magnified excellent meteor traces on log cabin with Slim Jim and not all appear on the E6400 (which has 5/8 aerial). I am concerned that this might be to do with height of aerial as I am not allowed to keep an aerial at this height long term in my garden...
I have changed amplitude scale on E6400 again to magnify traces and make them more obvious ( 95dB to 70dB). On the desktop PC the WSJT waterfall is picking up a lot of meteors that aren't large enough to be seen on the Spectrum Lab trace. I can't get WSJT 10 working with FunCube Dongle Pro Plus. Interestingly I can hear meteor pings audibly on E6400 even though they don't appear on Spectrum Lab. 15:21. Small number meteors only on E /8 aerial on log cabin higher numbers on Yaesu+Slim Jim. I have now changed amplitude scale on Spectrum Lab on E6400 (to 95dB to 75dB) and immediately more comparable meteor trace appeared: 19:19. Few meteors on log cabin Yaesu + Slim Jim, none on E6400 laptop, FunCube+5/8 aerial. I have now swapped back 5/8 onto Yaesu and Slim Jim onto FunCube and will put 4th pole back on Slim Jim. 21:56. Don't know what has happened only one meteor on desktop PC in log cabin with Yaesu and 5/8 aerial (aerial has NOT moved same feeder) and none on laptop E6400 with Slim Jim aerial and 4 poles. I have found new way of showing waterfall using SDR Sharp rather than WSJT 10 or WSJT X see below: Irfan View takes automatic screensaves every 30 secs.
NB Above left is SDR Sharp waterfall same one that normally appears in screen windows within that screen can be increased so waterfall covers most screen by dragging on edges of waterfall window. No success with meteor detection using FunCube Dongle Pro Plus don't know why. However, I have now purchased a plug in USB microphone and headphone socket and plugged it into the Dell E6400 using spare USB I (1m) extension cable, used with ICOM R7000 receiver and Slim Jim aerial on 4 poles within couple minutes a convenient meteor appeared simultaneously on both the E6400 (using Slim Jim aerial on 4 poles) and also on Log Cabin PC with Yaesu FT 817 and 5/8 aerial proving it worked!
The meteor screen shot on the E6400 is pasted above not as high a db level compared to background noise as on Yaesu but then the ICOM R7000 is less sensitive and much older. Note this occured after the screen display on R7000 disappeared suggesting the problem is with display module and not tuning of receiver. 6/5/17@15:16. Good number meteors on Yaesu overnight currently we are in Eta Aquarid Meteor Shower. Also being detected on ICOM R7000 on Dell E6400 although not as sensitive so fewer and peaks on Spectrum Lab less pronounced. Example of meteor via ICOM R7000 & Dell E6400:
I have therefore changed the Log Cabin PC over to the ICOM R700 now rather than Yaesu. Dell E6400 now using Yaesu and 5/8 aerial. Interestingly WSJT 10 does not work on Dell E6400 regardless of whether using line in (via USB dongle) or FunCube Dongle so it does not like USB based sound devices. ICOM R7000 receiver on log cabin PC set to 0dB on WSJT :34 Strangly Dell E6400 now showing 4 distinct continuous peaks (different frequencies) not on desktop in log cabin I think there is some issue with this laptop.
