DESCRIPTIONS The system comprises three units which allow the investigation of the fundamentals of analog and digital servo control : a Main Unit (Analog and Digital Servo Controller) a Mechanical Unit a Virtual Instruments Interface Unit (A/D, D/A, Digital I/Os) with VICL and Computer Aided Learning The Mechanical Unit is connected to the Main Unit for the investigation of analog servo control fundamentals and for the investigation of digital servo control fundamentals. The Main Unit is also connected to an PC with Compute Aided Learning Software to provide a computer-aided laboratory environment to teach the fundamental components of analog and digital servo control systems. The Mechanical Unit carries a dc motor, tachogenerator, gray code disc (absolute and incremental digital encoders), slotted disc, servo potentiometer and magnetic brake (Eddy Current brake). The Main Unit carries a summing amplifier (error amplifier), a controller with independent P, I and D channels, signal amplifier, power amplifier, brake controller, linear motor driver, PWM motor driver, gray code inputs, slotted sensor input, tachogenerator input, servo potentiometer, counter, function generator, dc power supply, variable resistors, switches, multimeter (optional) and sensors interface. Access is given to the input and output potentiometers enabling a wide range of linear and digital systems to be investigated. The Virtual Instruments Interface Unit provide analog to digital conversion, digital to analog conversion and switching and multiplexing. This unit act as the interface unit for PC based instruments and data logger. The software VICL is an excellent software for virtual instruments and servo control system experiments. Computer Aided Learning software is provided for use with the trainer allows assignment work to be carried out with on-screen theory, background information, patching instructions, practical screens and questions on the work done. Interconnection between units is by ribbon cable and system interconnection is by plugged patch-leads on the main unit, which carry clear graphic layouts. A student workbook is also provided with a comprehensive range of detailed experiments starting from an introductory level and progressing to frequency response principles. 2
A Power Supply is included which provides all of the necessary dc voltage supplies required by the system. In addition, the trainer can be used in a MATLAB design and analysis environment by the lecturer or student. MECHANICAL UNIT The Mechanical Unit consists of a dc motor, magnetic brake (Eddy Current brake), slotted disc with sensor, gray code disc, servo potentiometer, tachogenerator, interface unit and connectors. The power supply for the Main Unit is connected to this unit. Specification Permanent magnet motor with armature current. Tachogenerator, 2.5V/1000 rpm. Magnetic brake (Eddy Current brake) for load. 4-bit absolute (Gray code) encoder on output shaft. Slotted disc with sensor for speed measurement on motor shaft. Output for servo potentiometer for position measurement on motor shaft. Interface unit for input/output to Main Unit inclusive power supply. 3
MAIN UNIT The Main Unit provides all of the electronic circuitry required for performing a wide range of analog servo control experiments, ranging from the basic introductory principles of servo control through to full PID implementation. It has clearly presented screened legend to enable the student to identify and understand the components of such control systems. The Main Unit also acts as the interface between the Mechanical Unit and a PC via the Virtual Instruments Interface Unit. With linear or digital PWM motor drive, input and output potentiometers or digital encoders enable a wide range of linear and digital systems to be realised. Connection to the Mechanical Unit is by way of a ribbon cable which also supplies power to the unit and connection to the computer is via the Virtual Instruments Interface Unit. Specification Summing amplifier (error amplifier) with additional time constant. Proportional controller. Integration controller. Differentiation controller. Gain control amplifier. Power amplifier. Magnetic brake controller. Linear motor driver. PWM motor driver. 2 switches. 2 carbon track variable resistors. Tachogenerator output (velocity feedback control). Servo potentiometer output (position control). LED display of incremental and absolute encoders (gray code) with output. Slotted sensor output. 4
Mechanical interface. 0 ~ 100kHz sinewave, squarewave and triangular wave function generator. Rpm and frequency counter upto 1MHz. VIRTUAL INSTRUMENTS INTERFACE UNIT WITH VICL AND COMPUTER AIDED LEARNING SOFT- WARE This unit is a interface unit for Main Unit and PC. This unit perform analog to digital conversion, digital to analog conversion and switching and multiplexing. It can act as data logger, oscilloscope, panel meter, event recorder, voltmeter, function generator, control teaching system and etc. The unit connected to PC via parallel port. VICL, the software provide virtual instruments, controlling and Computer Aided Learning. 5
Specification Hardware Analog input, analog output, logic input and logic output all in one box. All input/output connections are via 4mm sockets for easy interconnection in student laboratories. Analog Output:- Analog Input:- Logic Output:- Logic Input:- Power requirement:- 2 channels, 12bit, ±5V range. 8 channels, 12bit, +5V, ±5V, +10V, ±10V ranges. 8 channels TTL or 5V CMOS levels. 8 channels TTL or 5V CMOS levels 5V power supply required. Software VICL Package Virtual Instrument Control Laboratory (VICL) turns any PC into a versatile Control Laboratory Tool for teaching control or controlling experiments. VICL allows openloop, servo and PID control to be implemented. Drive signals are from the internal signal generator or external waveform generators. Real plant can be driven via Virtual Instruments Interface Unit hardware. Results are shown on the 8 channel vir tual oscilloscope. VICL allows real plant to be controlled from a PC with all control signals being de rived within the PC and the PC being used to display all control signals. VICL can be used to identify the open-loop response of a plant, see how a servo responds to changes in Gain and Velocity Feedback or to see how a process re sponds to changes in PID control settings. All controls are set from the mouse and all responses are shown on the 8 channel graphic display. VICL software replace a Digital Oscilloscope, Signal Generator, Phase Meter, Servo Controller, PID Controller, Digital Meters and Data Logger to give easy to un derstand and easy to view control experiments. The control experiments are sup ported by the Computer Aided Learning Software. This software run under Windows 98, 2000 and NT. 6
