3 INTRODUCTION During the last two decades, cochlear implants (CI) have become a well established treatment for children with a profound hearing loss. Increased focus on young recipients has been facilitated through the implementation of newborn hearing screening programs. Combined with better objective methods for the diagnosis, these efforts have resulted in positive outcomes in speech, language and educational development of early implanted children. With a cochlear implant and an FM system, children can overcome noise, distance and reverberation in acoustically challenging situations. The FM system focuses speech directly to the child s ear and the child becomes an active partner in the conversation rather than an observer. When an FM system is connected to the speech processor, the child hears the input from both the processor microphone and the FM system microphone. The sound received by the microphone of the processor will be slightly softer compared to the normal listening situation in order to give priority to the sound from the FM system. This mode is called MIX mode and is advisable for most listening situations. Should a situation require listening to an external device without disturbing background noise, the EXT mode is available (not available in DUET). In EXT mode, the processor microphone is deactivated, and only the signal of the external device is sent to the processor. MIX/EXT MODE FOR THE REMOTE BTTERY PCK When using the Remote Battery Pack, the MIX and EXT functions are selected by the EXT/MIX switch. This manual will show how easy and straightforward it is to connect the CI-system to the Oticon migo FM solution so children with a CI will benefit from their migo FM solution. For detailed information about use, suggested fitting and maintenance of the individual processors, please refer to relevant instructions from MED-EL. 3
4 MED-EL OPUS 2 speech processor Equipment needed: > MED-EL OPUS 2 speech processor > FM Battery Pack Cover from the FM Extension Kit > migo Receiver R1 or R2 > migo Transmitter T10, T20 or T21 Power sequence steps 1-7: B 1. 5 MED-EL OPUS 2 speech processor Users will not have to make changes in their map when connecting an FM system to the speech processor. However, it may be necessary to alter the speech processor program options to accommodate an FM system. 5. Set the receiver switch to 00 (MIX) or 0 (EXT) 6. Turn the speech processor ON by gently pushing the battery pack lock down until it rests into place () Set the volume setting of the FM system to minimum (access the T20/T21/ WRP programming menu to reduce the FM or FM + H gain in the migo receiver). Set the volume of the speech processor to normal. Once you have connected the two instruments, increase the FM volume slowly until it is comfortable. Consult the migo FM Fitting Guide for more information about programming/changing FM receiver gain. 7. Synchronize the migo transmitter and receiver, as described in the migo Instructions for use. 5

9 MED-EL OPUS 2, OPUS 1 & TEMPO+ with remote battery pack Set the EXT/MIX switch to MIX, to mix the signals coming from the FM system and the speech processor microphone (MIX mode). If the child wants to listen to the FM signal only, it is easily done by setting EXT/MIX switch to EXT. Set the volume setting of the FM system to minimum (access the T20/T21/ WRP programming menu to reduce the FM or FM + H gain in the migo receiver). Set the volume of the speech processor to normal. Once you have connected the two instruments, increase the FM volume slowly until it is comfortable. Consult the migo FM Fitting Guide for more information about programming/changing FM receiver gain. 4. Synchronize the migo transmitter and receiver, as described in the migo Instructions for use. 7. Synchronize the migo transmitter and receiver, as described in the migo Instructions for use. ON 8. Turn the speech processor ON 11
12 Troubleshooting If you experience problems with the unit, check if the CI child can hear speech with his speech processor when the FM system is not connected. If a problem occurs, check the function of the different devices: Device Speech processor FM receiver/ FM-CI adaptor Transmitter Listening check Reset the speech processor (turn OFF/ON) Check all connections to the speech processor Reset the transmitter (turn OFF/ON) listening check of the speech processor can be performed using MED-ELs microphone test device (MTD). Follow the instructions given in the user manual of the MTD. Replace the batteries Check that the mode switch is in the correct position being either: FM+CI FM only Exchange batteries You can check the migo transmitter by plugging a headset into the auxiliary audio input jack at the bottom of the transmitter. Select Monitor Single Channel in the FM Channel Wizard, talk into the microphone and listen in on the selected channel. Verify the function of the speech processor components (check the manual) Check the microphone connection (exchange microphone if necessary) If the signal is distorted and you suspect electromagnetic interference, walk around in the room in order to locate the source of this interference. Check if either finding a different place in the room is beneficial, or whether choosing a different channel will solve the problem for the CI user. Synchronize the transmitter and receiver In case the close proximity of the speech processor and the migo receiver causes interference, the FM-CI adaptor with the migo receiver can be connected to the speech processor, or to the remote battery pack via a cable, and attached to the clothes. This way the distance between the migo receiver and the speech processor is increased minimizing the risk of interference. Perform a listening check (see below) The receiver cannot be programmed while the speech processor is being worn and switched on: In this case, the signal of the speech processor coil competes with the programming signal. Detach the coil from the cable for the short time it takes to program the receiver. Be sure to re-attach it properly and check its function (see speech processor manual). If the child is old enough, you can ask whether he or she can hear your voice. Please refer to for information about the CI products and troubleshooting guides. 12
