10 Some of the conclusions Compared to the commission s benchmark study (2013) progress has been made: 13 out of 17 initially implement (b), 3 on consumer request and one will implement partly A majority of MS did not make additional interoperability specifications (eg companion standards / profiles) Various choices for standards are made, status of and relation between standards is not clear 10

11 Interoperability & Profiling Interoperability the ability of two or more networks, systems, devices, applications or components to interwork, to exchange and use information in order to perform required functions In general, smart meter system interoperability can be reached by the following process: Functional analysis and use case creation Standards selection Profiling based on standards and specifications Testing 11

12 Interoperability layers Interoperability can apply between any layers of smart metering systems e.g. Physical layer - the hardware to connect systems or devices Communication layer the communications technology (e.g. PLC or Ethernet) and the transport (e.g. TCP/IP) Information layer the data model, to ensure that devices speak the same language Functional layer the Use Cases (to be) implemented 12
